Planning to resume a long section hike from Daleville to Harpers Ferry beginning Friday, Sep 3. Any information on the availability of water? Thanks for any help. dan b.

Just did an overnight between Thornton Gap and Front Royal last week. Water was hit or miss. A couple of springs were unusable/dried up but others (Gravel Spring Hut for one) were just fine. I also got lucky and had the coolest weather of the summer though. Found myself carrying more than I needed to avoid going to springs that were too far off trail.

Thanks - that's somewhat encouraging. Anyone out there familiar with current conditions between Daleville and Waynesboro? I do anticipate the need to carry extra water - I just want to be able to get it!
thanks, dan b.

There is a water update posted on Shenandoah's website as of 9/15/10.
Pretty much no shelter in the southern district has water, except Blackrock Hut, which has a pretty slow flow (.25 L per minute). Most other springs are dry. Our plan is to carry way too much water from Rockfish Gap to Calf Mtn; start north on day 2 and see what the two springs to north of the shelter hold and then decide if we will need to leave the AT and head down the fire road to the Moorman's River and then hike north on the Moorman's River Trail and the fire road. After that we will carry what we need from ranger stations, campgrounds and entrance stations.
Makes for heavy packs, but being thirsty is not fun.
