I just went through this section and found almost NO water other than at Doll Flats, the lake itself, the crossing at TN 209 (#?) and Abington Shelter, this despite rain yesterday and the day before. (I'm told Double Spring has water but I did not personally check it out.)

Whatever you do, do NOT try to get water at Vandeventer: it's more than a 350 vertical foot drop to get to the supposed source and roughly a quarter mile or more to do so.

I also found Overmountain Shelter and Stan Murray before it dry except for a VERY small trickle WAY downstream through brambles to get to.

There was NO water whatsoever at Roan Mountain. Doll Flats before it had good water (north side going NOBO) but be careful looking for the blue blaze to it: it's somewhat obscured by vegetation.

Bottom line: tank up wherever you can given the scarcity of water.

Actually those water sources sound ok compared to what I had up north (before this storm came through). A trickle then is heaven. And going down a few tenths of a mile for water is no big deal. I had to carry water 8 miles in NY. But really appreciate the update as I am going through there soon.

There was very good water at the spring at Mountaineer Falls shelter on Saturday, the day before the recent rains.

Does anyone know if there is water at the Jerry Cabin shelter?

Was there no water at Carver's Gap? There is a piped spring around the side of the parking lot.

The piped spring at Overmountain was dry as well?

We went through at a good time in June. Water was to be had numerous places. Every location noted on the map as well as several other.

An option would be to water up at the Hostel on 19E.; and to get some Pizza at the barn that is off the road on the left on the way into town (Roan).

I sectioned Watauga Lake to Damascus about 2 1/2 weeks ago and Abingdton, Double Spring and Vandeventer, despite the long way down to it had water. I talked to a couple of guys who said they got water at Iron Mtn despite other people hearing that it was dry but I did not check it out personaly. Watauga shelter and the small streams in between the lake and Damascus were mostly dry.
