View Full Version : Neo Air R booster

This was an experiment that I had in mind for some time, so finally motivated my self to do it a couple of weeks ago.
It is meant to be a "booster" for a mat like the Neo Air . The idea was to have something like a solid foam mat but that is lighter and packs smaller.
My thought was that the most important thing is to isolate the Neo from the ground , and my Crazy Mat does that.
About 4 oz , 20" long,3" wide and 2 1/4 high when folded. Same size as a Thermarest Z Lite short but not as high.
The base is Tyvek, the tiles are from a blue mat.
Slept on it on iced snow twice. Not as warm as my Exped 7 (not that I expected that) but lighter and with some sort of safety margin in case of puncture.

BTW, in use the flat Tyvek face is against the floor, the tiles face the Neo Air.

And it's a chess/checkerboard for rainy days.

Works for us with our Neo Airs.

Exactly...
It would cost me $43.50 (about $46 AU) to get that mat here to Australia.
(BTW, I have one of those...)
The blue mat here is $5-10, the Tyvek can be found for free , the glue is a few dollars if you don't already have it.
And of course it gives you something to do...

Sorry, didn't realize where you are! :)

Funny you say that, because last night I did not know where I was either...
A noise woke me up during the night. First I had no idea where I was, then I remembered but for some reason I could not visualise my backyard .
I have been in the same house for about 18 years.
Not the first time this has happened either.

At the moment our dollar is high. Last year it was down to 63c so the same mat would have cost me about $69. (ouch)

In 35 years of married life I've lived in 11 different houses in 11 states, and many apartments and condos in those states and 2 other countries. It's not at all unusual that I wake up and momentarily forget which house I'm in now! Spent almost 3 weeks in a tent in So. America, came home and woke during the night convinced I was still in the tent.

That's pretty cool Franco. How much would you say it would "boost" the value?

Sorry, not sure.
I have only tested that on two nights on the snow but was not brave enough to test the Neo without it.
As a guess the combo felt about the same (but comfier) as the Prolite 4 W (but not as warm as the Exped 7) , so maybe around R1/ 1.5 + 2.5 ....
The first night, in the Scarp 1 , was colder (23-25 f air temperature) but relatively calm. The second was warmer (around freezing point) but pretty windy and I was in the Moment.
We purposely camped on a ridge at 5700'. (to test the tents but also because we both prefer to have a view rather than "protection")

Actually no..
The first night I was in the Moment, the second I was in the Scarp...
My mate had the fabric of the Moment pushing/slapping his face but he was inside his eVent bivvy.
He used a Z Lite .

If I come across any extra Tyvek I will have to try that out. Those foam pads were at Wal-Mart for like $7.
