View Full Version : The "Official" 2011 Southern Ruck Thread
I spoke with the NOC a few days ago and everything is confirmed for January 14-16 & 17.
Once again we'll be using the community building for cooking and dining, and Relia's Garden for presentations.
Since a few may not be able to make it, it's likely I'll have a few spots available in the Cabins. Cabin costs are slightly more than basecamp but include private rooms and linens. PM me if you have any interest and I'll put you on the waiting list.
I still have a couple spots to fill on the schedule. If anyone has a slideshow or presentation they'd like to present, please let me know.

OK, that will be fine, I have the room number.
For anyone else that's interested, I have a few more spaces left in the cabins for singles and couples. It's $50 per person for Friday & Sat and/or $25 for optional Sunday. The cabins are awesome, with linen, blankets, towels etc. Good times. PM me for more details.
Also, the schedule is pretty much set.

may not come if i dont have a job by rucktime.so ill have to give you the information you will need now. i call this peice, "40 ways to leave your blubber" or"how to have fun at the noc."
limit your walks up and down the hill to less than 100 times a day.
watch the moon from the top of the road beyond the last cabins where the road turns at the top and you cant see a single man made object. this is the noc's sweet spot.
allways fumble with your pack on the wall rear of the outfitter. its where nubee women hikers can be chatted up.
dry your clothes useing the hand dryer in the bathroom.or just toast them up for a morning treat.
sleep out on the deck of the mens group cabin. its where chicks come to hear dude and austin play music.
walk south on the trail from the noc to the top for the quickest best veiw.
eat at the resturaunt its really good.
hang close to sly and marsha as they rule the kingdom.
dont be affraid of the bacon portions at breakfast. this is your bacon oppurtunity nocin.
force loud snorrers out in the cold with your staff or pole as this aint hikin and they dont have dibs on your quiet.
and the number one thing to do to not loose your blubber and still have fun?
ask for more bacon even if it seems dangerous. the human body can take alot more punnishment than you think.
oh, allmost forgot. get up at 530 am to see lwolf in his prime. hes up, showered, beard trimmed, freashly jogged and a hell of a dead baby joke teller.
have fun!

Hey Sly,
I appreciate the quick response. I'm going to try and make it. It looks like a great time. I'd probably be in basecamp if not in the shelter a little less than a mile from the NOC. Is there any thing I need in advance or just show up with my gear, money, questions and excitement?

I had posted this on the ladies forum, but see that most of the SoRuck thread is here! :)
Looking forward to "the ladies get together" and all the wonderful yummy things that may be there....
Just a reminder, on gear night sell/swap I am cleaning out the gear closet of some very cool things, mostly clothes.... Patagonia, Pendleton, Columbia, Pearl Izumi - mostly hikewear and nothing over $20!
Also have a great pair of Merrell boots (sorry, not $20) and other odds and ends. Anyone else bringing some gear to sell or swap? I've gotten some great deals in the past years, and always had a great time. I heard that the gear swap is at the same time as the ladies get together - true? Maybe we can do a ladies gear area there as well that would make it easier, thoughts?

the number one thing you absolutly positivly must not forget to do is,...
eat all the unlabled food dayhikers leave in the fridge thereby violating the write your name on your food or loose it rule for me.
Great news. I got an email from Lauren at the NOC and they're going to give us all a 20% off coupon for their outfitter. That's a pretty serious deal. Also, they'll be donating a piece of gear for the raffle.

Check out the list (in sig) to see if your name is included. If not let me know. If it is included and you can't make, also let me know. As it is, I have 120 so I won't have many, if any, extra blanks.
did you get my dog Kaia??
and add green bean casserole to fri nite.
Coming to the PA Ruck?
I tend to doubt it. I have doctors appointments in Mass either side of the Pa Ruck. The best I'd be able to do is make the Winter Warmer.
Hmmmm... apparently Miss Janet is having transportation problems and may not be able to make it this weekend.
Will anyone be passing near Erwin that can pick her up?

How are the roads to NOC from Atlanta?
How far is the commute to Ashville?
I plan to make it for at least Saturday.

All major roads up through Andrews, NC then the road seems a little narrow going through the gorge, but it's fine. From NOC to Asheville is only about 1.5 hours.

If you drive mid-day and arrive mid-afternoon when the sun is out, the roads should be fine. Still, everyone should allow an little extra time and be aware of the shadow areas and black ice going through the gorge.

road through the gorge is good pending a light snow that might come through tonight. they keep it maintained as high priority with all of the truck traffic that goes through between Asheville and Andrews etc. weather through the weekend looks great!!
Should be cleared up by then, for some getting up the hill without a 4WD once at the NOC might be troublesome. Good thing this group is used to walking uphill! :)

Just wanted to remind all the women, that the women hikers get together will be Saturday from 3:45 until 5pm. Cabin E. ALL women at the ruck are welcome, hiker or not. If you are a hiker or the partner, daughter, friend or just happen to be a woman at the ruck, come on out.
I will be bringing wine and chocolate. Surely someone else will bring some cheese and crackers. :)
Looking forward to the weekend!!

Hmmm, does anyone out there like baked brie?
Also, I have a bunch of ladies hiking gear, and I hear that the regular gear swap was at the same time. Is there a place for ladies gear to bring during that time?

Yes, all women and men in hiking skirts are welcome! :p

You really think we might need 4WD to go home?
You really think we might need 4WD to go home?
no - the question is the parking at NOC - might need to park at the bottom of the hill instead of driving up to the basecamp/cabin area if one does not have 4WD - not a big deal IMO

Weather Chanel forecasts temps in the mid-40s at Bryson City for the weekend. That will be bliss after what we are going through here in Sugar Grove. Hopefully, I'll begin hearing plows sometime soon.--Kinnickinic

Oh i see! I might just leave my car at my hotel room and walk the two miles. Thank you for clarifying!

If they do/did a decent job plowing, it's supposed to be sunny, and over freezing, Fri and the weekend, so the road up should be OK. I more worried about the steps and stairways at night, so I'll pick up a bag of rock salt.
Another concern could be frozen pipes. Hopefully they're on top of that.
You really think we might need 4WD to go home?
No, like HOI said, it's just inside the NOC parking area, there's a steep hill up to the lodge/dining hall. But it's no big deal, looks like we're due for some sweet weather in the 40's! :)

The main roads should be open getting to NOC. It may be questionable for 441 through the park and 129 (The Dragon).
Forecast for this general region is for Thur and Fri to warm up and be sunny. Should be enough to clear any snow/ice that is remaining on the roads.
everyone be careful. See you Fri evening.

I love brie!
I know the swap is at the same time, there really is not a good independent time so we do what we can. There is not really any room indoors to show/swap but we could do some out on the deck or out the front porch. Bring it along if it sounds good to you. Last year Heartfire put up one of her tents right out front of the cabin.

I just saw this post, Sly. If she has not made other arrangements, I would be very happy to take Janet to the RUCK tomorrow afternoon, returning Sunday morning. My ALDHA directory was tossed by my daughter while she was house sitting for me over Thanksgiving. It's times like these that I rage about it because I can't access phone numbers quickly. If she wants me to pick her up, my phone number is 276-677-0030. I'm packing and will go to bed about 9:30.--Kinnickinic

I am planning to bring the family, but now it is 7 and we have a Chrysler minivan - not a 4WD. We are likely to leave after 5PM. Black ice is a huge problem already tonight locally. I really don't want to risk problems, even if I'm bringing Saturday breakfast.
So, any locals up there knowing anything about road conditions in NoGa and between Blue Ridge and Murphy?

Why dont you go up 985 when it then turns into US23 and on to 441. its all main roads that way. I talked to a woman in bryson city and she said the roads were fine. I'm leaving around noon tomorrow and don't expect any problems.

OB, I drove through Atlanta during rush hour Thursday night (also in a minivan) and hit a little patchy ice in the far left hand lane of I-85. The right hand lanes were clear. Once I got on I-985 and 441 the road was clear to Franklin. Since it supposed to warm up today, I don't anticipate any problems from here to NOC. Just take care on rt 74 from near Bryson City to NOC and you should be fine.
Oops, I see you're coming from the the side. Stay to the right on the main highways and keep it slow on 74 and you should be fine

Gwiz, I didn't see your name so you won't have a printed name tag however, I will have some blanks and a marker. You're welcome to have one. Otherwise there is no formal registration. Come on down and check it out.

Waiting on the Lady Bug and will be there with 5 kids this year. We are leaving a bit reluctantly - just learned one of her cats has cancer and isn't likely to be with us very much longer. Bringing the usual blueberry and pancake fare, tangerines, snacks and sodas.
And a great time was had by all! Thanks 4shot for all the advice and good wishes! Nice to meet so many folk for the first time.
yes, it was a great event, so nice to see so many ladies at the gathering on Saturday - thanks for a great company! Wonderful to see new faces, and hear new stories, as well as ones I know :)
