I've come to the realizations that my 2lb Kelty LY down 40 seems a little too hot due to its half zip, and 2 lbs is more than I need to carry (though still pretty light).

Criteria:
1. Light weight, 22oz or less
2. Down preferred for compressibility and long life. But will consider some quality synth, esp if they are a good value.
3. Price, basically this is whats keeping from just pulling the trigger for a JRB Stealth, enLIGHTened Revelation or a WM Summerlite. I would guess my limit is $190.
4. Quality. Its whats keeping me from jumping on a $50 Deuter or Lafuma syn bag. Not sure if they will keep their loft or not be too tight/constricting (side sleeper).

check out hammockgear.com, He makes some really nice stuff. The Summer Burrow weighs 16 oz. It's about $30 more than you're hoping to spend but would most likely be worth it.

Have you looked at the enlightened Prodigy yet? you can choose the type of insulation you want, which there are some for less than 190. it would be great for a summer quilt.

I used a Mountain Hardwear Phantom 45 over the summer on my AT thru. I bought it for about $160 and sold it after the hike for $100. Weight was about 17 oz.

It was warm down into the upper 30s. It had an ounce more down than similar bags rated at 40.

Keep an eye out here and other websites in gear for sale forums. I had similar issues with my Sierra Designs Wicked Light 40. Good 40 deg bag at the price I paid (50% off sale at Sierra Trading two years ago) but it is a bit confining size (girth) wise for me and the half-zip made it too warm at times even with the foot zip. I picked up a new WM Caribou, 35 deg microfiber bag (64 inch girth, full zip) for under $200 on eBay. Woo hoo! I finally own a WM bag! The Sierra Designs bag may wind up for sale here next week if my daughter or her friend doesn't want to buy it.

What he said. I think I gave $90 for my JRB Shenandoah on BPL. Or watch for Golite to have a sale, they had one a few weeks ago for 30% off.

i made my own and i couldn't be happier... 900 fill down, double baffled, just the right size.

i can help lend advice if you want to try to sew your own, you don't need much of a machine to do it.

...that said i also had the phantom 45, but it was just a tad cold for me, so i switch to the MHW phantom 32... with the zipper cut off it'd be 19 ounces.

I would get the JRB Stealth. Great price for an ultralight, highly compressible quilt.

MYOG a quilt.

Walmart 1 oz fabric fromt he bargain bin if you can find some for $1.50 a yard and some 2.5 oz climasheild.

Everything should cost about $35-40 depending.

If you want some high end .9 oz fabric from one of the gear material outlets that will cost about $15/yard.

Weight should be about 14 oz if you keep it tight and good to 45-50dF or so.

I messed around, and didn't buy up all the Walmart nylon. And I really need to make version 2 of my quilt.

Here's a super cheap, and super easy option: fleece. I bought 3 yds for $9 and cut it to size. No need to sew anything.

Yeah I know what you mean. I regret not buying all the 1 oz ripstop and .7 oz green netting they had. They other day they had some digital camo 2 oz ripstop, but its 2 oz. got enough for a couple of hammocks.

I like my 35$ lafuma, it has held up fine and is plenty big enough, even when I weighed 250. It's pretty high content in that it has stuff like a pocket, glow in the dark zip pull, tactel lining. It's full zip and mostly I use it like a quilt. It's really a 50* bag, perfect for summer in the south and the price is exceptional. It looks like it's 45$ now, but will probably be 35$ by the time you need it. I don't regret it a bit.

30% off coupon going on now means it's back to 35$

I use their "down blanket" for summer use. It zips into a mummy but it is way too constrictive for me that way but if you unzip it except for the footbox and use it as a quilt, it is awesome.

I would also suggest hammockgear.net for a summer quilt.

A new piece of kit arrived today that you'd be remiss in not considering.....a Stealth No Sniveler by JRB. It can double as a very nice camp coat/capote as well as a quilt over a pad on the ground and/or if you hang it can be a UQ or TQ. I put it on and was much surprised at how much loft it has. 16oz and their on sale now.

I use a Backpacking Light UL 60 quilt (http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/cocoon_ul_60_quilt.html) as my Summer bag.

I use a Western Mountaineering Highlite most of the time. If it's really hot then I sometimes don't bother with it

Yes, I had a look and the JRB No Sneveller is at $220 in the R size. ($50 off)
From memory I bought it a few years ago one on sale.
If that fits you (flemdawg) I would also strongly suggest that you find the extra few dollars and go for it.
The 25-30f range is a bit optimistic , more like 30f and up for me, however it would be that as a serape (double use...) and you can layer under it.
One caveat : they are a bit narrow at the shoulder. Ideal for me at 5'7", 150 lbs , but keep that in mind.

Check out the MLD quilts. they start at $180 and the price goes up a little depending on the options you want. Look pretty good. Synthetic and still very UL.

I wrap this around my very basic hammock and use it inside a bug net in warm weather. It keeps me (warm blooded) comfortable down to the mid 40s.

+1 what Tinker sez. Opened up like a quilt, this is my mid-summer sleep solution for on the ground or in my hammock. :)

i use my 20 degree down quilt and i'm good to go in the summer. if it's hot i simply put it under my knees... of course, that's what makes hammocking so awesome
