Just found out that I have a liver disease, probably from drinking. I drank quite a bit as a teenager but only started back around 3 yrs. ago. I have to stop now and was wondering if anyone else has the same condition. All the more reason to hike the AT in 2011! :-?:rolleyes::mad::sun

number 1, get on milk thistle, 2000mg a day. It works better than all the drugs.

Thanks Juma, I'll read up on that! My DR. recommends vitamin e, 400 mgs. per day and co-enzyme 100 mg. per day!
Sometimes it takes somthing like this to make us realize there is only so much time for us to do the things that we want to do. People who think they can put stuff off are just people who haven't had a wake up call yet!
Yeah--pay attention to your doctor's advice--but get goin' and get your hike done. Who knows, the hike may do some good for your health.

I had my wake up call last spring when I found out I had an infected liver abcess which could have killed me had I stayed on the trail. Time to work on that bucket list :)

My aunt had a liver disease diagnosed over 20 years ago. She's alive and well
But I do like to go my the country song - "live like you were dying." Get out an enjoy what you can, never know what tomorrow will bring

I wholeheartedly agree. When I see people putting off their hikes until their later years I cringe.
Personally, in less than a year, I went from having long distance hiking being a life style to hardly being able to walk to the back of a big box store. After major surgery and lots of drugs, I'm not getting any better.

HiKen2011What a lot of people don't know, and which I learned not that long ago, is people who drink alcohol regularly don't realize that it doesn't take very long to mess up your liver from it. Believe it or not I learned it only takes like ten years of regular/heavy drinking before one can do significant damage. Hopefully you can reduce/impede the damage somehow. It would probably pay to consider giving up on it again. If you have difficulty, consider AA or another program based on the 12 steps. It's helped many a person who wanted it:-?.

How about the AT program based on the fifty million steps , and 5 months of an endless support system from GA > ME.
Good Luck !!

Good call juma. Read more about milk thistle here (http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/milk-thistle-000266.htm) at the University of Maryland site- a great reference for other herbs (http://www.umm.edu/altmed/) as well!

Good Luck !!I think the 50 million steps will take you to about the other side of the Artic Circle, so don't forget to have you warm clothes lined up:D.

HiKen, I'm sorry for this unfortunate development and I hope you're able to overcome this disease and live a fulfilling life which includes, of course, hiking the AT!

yeah...another one that I should have mentioned is fucoidan. It causes the body to generate stem cells for repair. Its some kind of sea weed extract (Minnesota Smith was on to something).

Not trying to be a buzzkill or anything but if you start taking herbs be sure to check for drug interactions for any other prescriptions you might be taking and when you go see your doctor be sure to tell him what you're taking too.

Hey,
Sorry to hear about your illness. Be good and follow the doctor's orders. Walking is one of the best therapies for almost everything that ails us humans. Cleans out the mind and the body. Keep on truckin'.
