I'm hoping to section hike the AT starting from Springer and ending in Damacus, VA. beginning this coming April, 2011. I'm hoping that someone can offer some advice on getting to the nearest train station for travel back to New Hampshire. I believe the closest station is in Danville, VA but that is about 150 miles away from Damacus. Any help would be appreciated.

One option that you have is with you starting in April is try to finish in Damascus by mid may and around Trail Days weekend. You can have a good weekend and then be able to find someone heading back North and East toward Richmond, Va. and you could catch a ride with them and share gas cost and get them to drop you off at the train station there.

Does anyone know when Trail Days is scheduled for this year?

You could also catch a Greyhound bus from Damascus, or from nearby Bristol or Johnson City, to an Amtrak station.

Thanks for all the info. I went on Greyhound's website and they didn't list Damascus as a stop. A bus would work for me too!

I've started/ended several hikes from Marion, VA. The bus arrives there about noon and leaves for points north about 11:30 PM. It is the most convenient bus station to the trail in that area.
Once you get to Damascus, you can get to Marion in 3 days by taking the VA Creeper trail and then the Iron Mountain trail to connect back to the AT at Hurricane shelter. (you'll neeed a map to figure out the trail connections) This by-passes the Grayson Highlands, saves 30 or more miles and is a pretty easy walk.
