What is your favorite place on the AT for a good hamburger and beer, or a pub to cool off from the summer heat?

On my list, Dot's Inn in Damascus VA; the Doyle Hotel in Duncannon PA; and when it re-opens (which will be by next hiking season) Five-Olde Nugget Alley in Hanover NH. There are, of course, others, but these will always be my top three.

in an all out thrmo burgular nuckler war, only dots and doyals would remain. forever birthing clone burgers after the real ones died out, in their underground burger protected citys. after many ketchup droughts and loss of fri teams, emmisarys would be sent to the surface to trade for new burger cloneing material. lwolf and i would meet at jesters house where the only functioning kitchen still existed, and there, under a flag of truce, pat would splice the dna from mine and lwolfs burger samples ushering in a new age of burger. to be called after the greatest trail burger that ever was,,.....the elms dinner burger. or elohim for short since it was gods name and this new burger would become like a god.

The Doyle has a great burger and fries - maybe the best I've had.

The best *sandwich* I've had was in West Cornwall, CT at the country store about a half mile from the trail.

there is a secret to getting the most food out of the resturant at noc. it happens once a year. at our ruck. if a certin number of a certin kind of hikers come in at a certin time and sit and act and order in a certin way, it is possible to yogi the whole salad bar. it must be done right . ametures dont go messin with this one. shes a big fish. but ive don it and seen it done. it works. you must know the correct sequence. but if you hit it on the head,...they empty the kitchen on you. i belive its something to do with storeing food after we leave combined with some other anomilys and a possible corralation between proxsimity of baltimore jack and the seasons on mars.look for it.

had a great burger in the 100 mile wilderness at the landing. But as someone else said, any burger on the trail is a great one.

Krispy, was a pleasure hiking with you this year and glad to hear you finished your second thru. I finished on the 15th of September. Went back up 5 or 6 days later to BSP to do trail magic and saw on the register there at the Ranger's office that I had missed you by a day or two.

My Whiteblaze name ain't my trail name, too lazy to change but you and I got caught in a pretty nasty hailstorm together just outside of Kent I believe.

The Whistlepig in Damascus has a great burger and decent prices on beer.

Rock Bottom in Hot Springs has an awesome buffalo burger although their beer gets a bit more expensive.

For hellagood pizza and wings and great beer, the Smoky Mountain brewery in Gatlinburg is a good choice. Just bring your gold card as Lone Wolf says. It's a nice meal though. I usually bring home of six pack of Black Bear Ale and Tuckaleechee Porter each time I leave the Smokies for home.

"burger and beer" or "pub". For a pub, it was/is hard to beat the Inn at the Long Trail. The local microbrew on draft (Long Trail ale?) was my favorite regional beer on the entire trail and I tried to sample as many of them as I could along the way (in moderation of course:)).

A few years ago there was a thread - can't remember the exact words but something to the effect of: "You know you're an AT hiker when..."

My response was something like "On road trips happening near the AT corridor, you find yourself passing up good restaurants and even driving out of your way to patronize AT establishments like the Doyle, much to the consternation of your spouse & kids"

My question is...how does someone get to be cynical at your age???!! it's not relevant to the thread but I had to ask.

talking about burgers is hard for me. if i had a burger right now i would eat it and go right to bed hopeing the burger might cause dreams of other burgers and fearing that if i stayed up, i might not dream other burgers. i would put katsup on it and maby some relish and mustard too. i have some nice bread i could use but i would be too scared of diluting the burger so i wouldnt. i would eat it slow and in small bites chewing for a lng time before swallowing. and i would wash it down with warm not cold water to preserve the flavors.if a peice of my burger dropped on the floor i would eat it. if my whole burger dropped on the floor i would eat it. if a peice of my burger dropped into a swill filled privi, i would die.

There used to be a pizza place in Damascus called Quincy's. I know it's not a burger story, but I stopped there after a 26 mile day through the Grayson Highlands and down the Creeper Trail. The big ol' sign on the side of the Creeper Trail mentioned beer and pizza, so I was obliged to go there. I had a large pizza, 3 beers and 3 glasses of iced tea. That was the night that Princes Dianna got killed, but the baseball game on the tube at Quincy's was never interrupted with the news. Good food. Good beer. Are they still there?

They closed down for a while, but they re-opened in 2009, I believe with new owners. Took them almost a year to get their liquior license, but I enjoyed a few beers there last July.

Damascus is one of the finest town on trail filled with many nice people & establishments.
Here in Virginia, I have enjoyed good food & libation at Trent's Grocery on VA 606 near Dismal Falls. Hiking buddy & I bought a 12 pack of Yuengling and some great food, hiked onto Dismal Falls, which we had to ourselves for the night. packed out all the cans, along with the previous user's trash.

Also, I found while hiking through Shennandoah Nat'l Park the glorious, expensive (but so worth it) Taproom @ Skyland. This, coupled with the random single beers you can purchase at most waysides & stores, only convinced me that the park staff encourages hikers to drink as they please. I was much obliged, though it was unnerving as these single beers were also available to the motor tourists that seem to plague the park, leading me to believe that the park also encourages motorists to drink as they see fit.

How about 5 Olde Nugget Alley in Hanover that Jack T. always raves about.

Tucked away off Main Street, 5 Olde Nugget Alley is a classic tavern only a few steps off the beaten path and yet possibly quite difficult to find.

Nice photo! Five-Olde is unfortunately closed for the moment (the roof fell in among other things!!) but they should be up and running by the time hikers arrive later on this year. Oh, and since they finally moved the Trail to the other side of Main St., 5-Olde is now literally just yards off the A.T. This has always been a hiker-friendly place, where one can literally walk up the bar and order a beer before you even take your pack off; they don't care and they're hqappy to see you; the new owners are great, and while it's been a pity to have the place closed all winter it sure is something to look forward to when I get back up this way come August. Along with Dot's and the Doyle, when hikers die, if they've been good, they wake up in a place that looks a lot like 5-Olde Nugget Alley.

I am a little biased because I live in a trail town. Warwick NY has plenty of places to enjoy a burger and a beer. My favorite is Yesterdays right in the heart of town. No doubt the best burger in Warwick and has a great tap selection to go with it. However, the center of Warwick is quite a walk from the trail. If at all possible I would recommend taking a couple of zero days and enjoy Warwick. It has a top 5/10 disc golf course in the country depending on which site you look at. Has a local town feel that is an hour drive to the city but couldn't feel any further. If you can't spend a few days there is the New Milford Deli which is just more than a mile off the trail where you can enjoy good deli food and as of recently some good tap and bottled beer. (No Coors light or any of that crap) The trail guide says to go from Barret road but it would be quicker if you hiked west on Iron Mountain road toward Rt.94. It is a dirt road that will turn into a side road which will lead down to an intersection where you will be staring at the deli.

The Warwick Motel is mentioned in the guidebook and has been recently renovated after a fire burnt down a good portion of it. The motel is the closest place to stay if you are walking from the trail. In fact I delivered pizza to a guy who was through hiking when I was in high school. It is located fairly close to down town where you can find numerous bars and pubs to relax and get some good food. If you were able to get a ride I would try to stay at a bed and breakfast. I know there are several in town that you can find online. Other than that there is not much. Warwick has kept its small business mentality so there are no best westerns or any thing of that sort. I live here so if you need a lift when your hiking through let me know I can point out all of the hot spots.

serious question please,
can hiker gosts from our time haunting the doyal, living off burger fumes, use future technologies not available at the time of our demise? or do gosts stop learning? and if so, does their inability to operate future communication devises prevent them from ordering fantom burgers and then in turn leed to their demise?

or do we have to move to the kitchen each day and follow pat home each night?

and do chef gosts cook for us in gostland?do gosts eat?
