I know that a lot of hammock-hangers have moved on to 'biners or other alternative methods of hanging, but I believe there are some of us who are a little more old-fashioned and enjoy the process of tying a knot.
What type of knot do you use to hang your hammock?

Bowline - but I'm thinking about going to the 'biners/straps for ease of hanging.

I use the magical Dutch Clips for my hammock and prusik knots for my tarps

What kind of ropes/webbing do you use to get from your hammock to the tree and around it?

I use biners/straps/descender rings but I always use a stop knot. Don't want the strap slipping through the ring. ;)

-whoopiesling made of amsteel from hammock to tree.
-tree straps and dutch clip around tree.
-Marlin spike hitch with toggle to connect sling to strap.

Has anyone tried hanging using a figure 9?

My only concern is it seems it would wear down your rope after continuous use?

My wife uses figure 9's for her tarp on all its lines. I use them on my tarp for the ridgeline attachment lines.
But not for my hammock. I prefer webbing with descender rings and dutch clips.

This. I don't think they're rated for a person's weight. Even the ones that are rated at 100# or so are the huge and heavy ones. For tarps and tie-outs, though, they rock! I use the tent kit for my tarp since it provides plastic 9s instead of the aluminum ones and it shaves a little more weight.

Could you let me know where I could buy and/or get information about using your system of webbing with descender rings and dutch clips?

Dutch Clips (http://www.jacksrbetter.com/DutchClips.htm) are available from Jacks 'R' Better. They make attaching your webbing to a tree possible without unrigging your webbing from the rings on the hammock.

For my ENO Doublenest, I replaced the ridiculously heavy steel carabiner and replaced them with 2 descender/rappel rings. I can then run the webbing through/over/under them and pull to the desired length.

I also secure the webbing in place with an overhand knot on a bight (a slip knot). Notew that the small carabiner in the picture has nothing to do with the hammock suspension. It is there to hold on my underquilt. The rings are silver in the pic.
I just use harbor freight 1200# straps around the tree to double decender rings, with a slippery half hitch to lock it down.
From the descender rings to the hammock, I use a short amsteel loop.
Tarp ridgeline to tree is a taut-line hitch.
Each tarp end to ridgeline is a prusik.
All tarp tieouts are taut-line knots.
