View Full Version : Nantahala Outdoors Celebrates the AT
Just a little info. While at NOC this past weekend for Soruck, one of the guys working at the store told us they were having their 1st annual AT hiker festival. For anyone interested, here is the link:

Thanks for the link. Thats a good place for a festival. I took one of their kayak roll clinics when I passed through there one year.

When I went there on my section, and a year later on my thru, you could see a lot of "fake hikers" there. They were the girls with makeup and NF gear on, brand new hiking stuff with no wear, and they smelled good. I guess any activity has people that like the "look" and image, but not the idea of actually hiking.

I know, right?! I agree...and mostly in the first 500 miles. BUT...I have always loved NOC and when he told me they were going to have something for hikers, I was surprised. Their main interest, of course, is the river so I found it pretty cool they were doing a festival for the trail. Especially since the trail runs directly through their campus.

yes it's going to be a great weekend. the NOC is due for an event like this so the class of 2011 will be greeted with quite the get together! music, vendors, and some great speakers/presentations (Andrew Skurka will be there!). hope to see all current, future, and past thru hikers there as well as the whole hiking community there!!

You make me chuckle LW. That's sorta like Bill Gates saying there's too many software companies.

I don't see how this is a problem what so ever.

i as well worry of the eldergas. to put it flatculently,...i fear for his fartlyness. could some sort of antigas bean x pill have been his unscently end? could it be that the recent mass bird deaths were the result of his fart collector going unatended and exsploding? did the goya truck jackknife and leave him tootless? is their a mrs fart we could speak with?

Their web site says "Both weekend dayhikers and long distance warriors are welcome to share their passion with like-minded friends and enthusiasts." Isn't there room for everyone in that?
hmm just a week after the April Fools Bash, just a hop and a skip over to NOC... sounds promising

So very true.
Do you think it's just another AT festival the speard the love & appreciation, or to bring some funds to the NOC?:-?

I wasn't complaining, just merely noting that there are posers in every sport or activity you can think of. They like the "commercial image" of being a hiker, the "rugged individualism" these companies make them think they can buy like a product, but not the realities, as in hiking all day in a rainstorm, showering once a week, constantly having wet shoes.
Hey Diatribe...
All portions of the event are free to attend, so we're not focused on making money [I work at NOC and am planning the event]. Andrew Skurka... badass long distance hiker is one of the speakers. We're doing trail maintenance to give back. Vendors present for repairs for current thru-hikers, and info and fun for all other attendees. Lots of schwag to give away (though current thru-hikers will be watching pack weight... we can ship door prizes home for them). Live music, bonfire, etc.
We know there are a ton of "parties" up and down the AT these days... our goal is to honor and celebrate the Trail and former thru-hikers as well as all backpacking enthusiasts, while supporting thru-hikers currently on their way through.
And Trailbender...
We've revamped our Outfitter's Store offerings this year with the AT backpacker in mind. A lot of lightweight thru-hiker popular options like Mont-bell insulation, ULA packs, alcohol stoves, etc.
We're into dirty schwilly hikers here. Though we have showers if you wanna use 'em, we prefer a frosty dip in the Nanty before we continue on down the ole dusty trail.

I like the NOC, don't take what I said the wrong way. It is a nice place to sit down and eat some ice cream and relax.

I enjoy his presentations - saw him twice this weekend. Last night's program was about his Alaska-Yukon Expedition, today was a backpacking clinic. He is featured in next month's National Geographic magazine.
