I'm looking into the GoLite Jam to seriously reduce my weight from my 5lb 7oz Gregory Pingora. The Pingora listed at 54L Capacity is almost full during a 4 day jaunt. The Jam is listed at 50L capacity, and I am looking for feedback about the accuracy of its capacity. Is that figure the main bucket, or does it include the front pocket? Golite customer service has been less than stellar at answering this question via email.

I carry...

37 oz hammock
2oz pad
20oz down quilt (48"X72")
10oz tarp
2L Platypus
1 Nalgene
4days freezer bag dinner
4days GORP
4 packets oatmeal, and 4days coffee
GSI Kettle (with supercat stove inside)
Steripen Traveler
Headlamp
Knife
1 coffecan wood stove (with 4oz alc bottle inside)
1 cored roll TP
1 2oz hand sanitizer
1 qt ziplock utility items (suct tape, string, etc)
1 qt ziplock first aid
6 ul aluminum stakes
Stuff sack of camp underwear, t shirt, socks
1 pair extra hiking socks
1 small copy of Where the Red Fern Grows

Will it fit?:-?

Thanks in advance

I have the pinnacle, but I would think you should be fine with the given list. Also, I've contacted Golite via email and phone before and your right, thier customer service SUCKS!

The capacity usually figures in the outside pockets.

I believe the outfitter at Harpers Ferry sells these. Look them up, call and see. The best you could do would be to take your gear to an outfitter and put it in the pack. Then you'd know.

I think they are the closest to your location. Golite's website has a retailer finder.

I'd go with the pinnacle. I just got mine in the mail and it looks great. It can be easily compacted to carry a smaller load, but it can also carry a fairly large load. I have a similar gear list to you and it fits my gear perfectly. Plus use the coupon code DSW10 at the check out and get 40% off, not bad.

if your gear will fit in a tall kitchen garbage bag, it will fit in a jam.

What size coffeecan, the smaller 1 lb size(~ 4" diameter), or the 3 lb (8" dia)?

Even with that uncertainty, I'm pretty sure all that will fit, as long as your clothing bag is really big.

Yes, you'll be fine. I carry a Jam, our gear list is very similar. I have 2 quilts, no 2oz pad. I carry a Caldera Cone system for cooking and a 700 SnowPeak mug. My utilities and first aid fit in the front pocket along with had & gloves (if I 'm not wearing them). I put my gorp for the day in my L hip pocket. I fit a phone & camera in my R hit pocket. I can fit a 16oz VitaminWater type bottle in the L side mesh (for flavored drink), but it's hard for me to put back after I take it out, so I bought a little cuben fiber pouch from zpacks to attach somewhere (think I'm going to hang it from the front of my hipbelt). Headlamp I hang from my top R side cincher, and I strap my tarp (in a snakeskin) to the R outside of my pack under the cinchers.

Let me know if you have any other questions! :D

Oh, and no copy of Where the Red Fern Grows, my books are on my ipod. Ipod fits in R front hip pouch with camera & phone.

I will have 2 quilts here soon as well, so I'm glad you included that, thanks.

Small size.

+1. I was able to move the same load in a bag like that, between a Jam2 (when they were really light), a Mariposa +, and an Exos 46. The Exos was just horrible.

I have both the Jam and Pinnacle; just got the Pinnalce only used it once.
You will be amazed at how much you can get into the Jam. The pockets on the Jam are actually more spacious than the Pinnacle (Pinnacle has more padding). I got the Pinnacle for cold weather hiking as I carry extra clothes and a extra sleeping bag which I use as an underquilt for my hammock. The volume measurement usually includes the pockets of the backpacks when they list them. The Pinnacle doesn't weigh a heck of lot more than the Jam so it is a good weight/benefit ratio when you need extra space. However for normal hiking, the Jam will always be my main stay. Both packs will compress down for lighter loads. Great packs.

On my last trip (with the Pinnacle) I carried: a WM Badger bag (long), an MH Exped bag -used as my underquilt, Warbonnet hammock, Speer tarp (8x10) rain jacket, rain pants, down sweater, ski pants, ditty bag with toiletries, headlamps, etc...weighing in at about a pound, bag with extra socks and shirt, 3 liter platy, nalgene, yaktrak in side pocket, camera, SPOT, food bag, MSR hyperflo water filter, and a blue Walmart closed cell pad strapped to the outside. Fully loaded with food and water, it came in at about 30lbs. Not too bad for a winter load. Carried comfortably.

If I didn't have the extra bag and ski pants, it all would have fit into the Jam.

Definitely agree with this statement. I use a tall kitchen bag as a liner and it fits with room to space. My gear list is a little less than yours but i have tons of room to spare so with what you're carrying there should be no problem.
