View Full Version : Can we be in agreement?

Someone recently asked which was harder - GA or GSMNP. In typical WB fashion, within just a few hours there were the following responses:

1. Georgia is harder
2. GSMNP is harder
3. Neither is hard
4. Both are hard

So I think it's time to make history!!!

I refuse to vote on the grounds that your poll relies on a decimal system and is culturally biased against my native method of mathematics which uses both hands and feet.

I'm lookin' at two toes though if it makes a difference.

The poll is flawed because it is based on the old system of false exactitude and certainty ... and the premise of "more is better." You need to get out of that box. Today, diversity is good and less is better.

P.S. I see that EVERYONE who has voted so far has agreed with MY choice between the two false answers! LOL

Well even at this point we are all in agreement. Everyone has chosen the second 2...

Well even at this point we are all in agreement. Everyone has chosen the second 2...

With 4 votes being cast there is only 1 chance in 16 (2*2*2*2) of that happening. I think 10k is really from Chicago...

That's pretty amazing - we can all agree on the answer and which answer it is.

It won't be long though.... :)

Neither. 1 + 1 is 10. (which is to say 2 bits)

I am a programmer, for those of you who haven't reached that conclusion yet. Though some of you may disagree.

Even if you say 1+1==10 in binary it is still true. If you convert 10 in binary to Decimal the answer is still 2.

Now stop trying to make it so we don't agree.

It depends on how you define "one" and "plus". If you add one drop of water to one drop of water, your result is one drop of water.

Well, I don't care if someone's a programmer or not, "1+1" isn't always 10 in base 1. It depends on what the "on" value is, i.e, is 0 a placeholder or a value? If the latter, is it the initial value (i.e. precedes 1) or the subsequent value (comes "after" 1).

Beyond that, other mathematical constructs make it possible for "1+1" to have a value, no value, or (for those who like Mr. Heisenberg more than Mr. Einstein) an indeterminate value. As a result, it is equally likely that we all agree, all disagree, or we can never know which.

When did math beome subject to change? I'm not learned I reckon cause i thought 1+1=10 in binary (base 2) was always true. I've never heard of base one

Unless your trail name is "Stumpy", even I'm fairly sure (with my horrendous math skills) that you only need one hand for this problem.

Being a CPA, I will answer your question with the standard accountants' response:

Q: How much is 1 + 1?

A: How much do you want it to be?

Another accountant's answer: depends whether they're debits & credits. A "1" debit plus a "1" credit = 0.

Back in '83, I took a math for computers course. In it we spent a day on theoretical base mathematics. One girl (Carol, I still remember her name :)) in the class and I got it. Everyone else was just sitting around dumbfounded as she and I debated out loud the properties of math using base -5. All the while the professor just sat with the biggest grin on his face with his head going back and forth as if watching a tennis match. Most fun day I ever had in college.

If I remember the basics of that, base 1 would be very simple. 1=1, 11=2, 111=3, 1111=4 and so on, with no representatation other than the number "1". That would mean 1+1=11. First graders would love that!

As any geek worthy of his or her pocket protector knows, 1 + 1 = 10.

But...but.... 0 is the first number so then wouldnt 1 == 00? Thus 1+1= 0000 in base 1?

Labelling my photos once, I assigned them numbers because many applications e.g. Facebook and Kodakgallery only sort by file name, not date. But for file names, the computers treated numbers as letters and I negligently failed to prefix my numbers with "00." So the sort came out:

1,10,100,101,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,2,20...

Makes perfect sense now! Thanks KK.

I"ll vote for the first one.
