Sorry to hear that you and Exxon are out of service this year. Can you refresh us about services as the Shell and willingness of the Relax Inn to hold packages.

I have really fond memories of this stop for some odd reason. The hiking for several miles before and after it was absolutely amazing. Fields, and it was relatively easy hiking, and a nice, sunny day. I got a pack of Oreos and a Dr Pepper at that gas station, then moved on.

:(

We went through there last year and she was so nice to us. She let us wait a couple of hours for our ride, charge our phones, plus gave us hiker portions for our meal.

Do you know what happened to her?

I called The Barn yesterday to see if they will take mail drops. The woman I spoke to said YES, gave me the mailing instructions, gave me the hours of operation, thanked me for calling and called me sweetie. I then looked on-line and couldn't find the menu, but I've read somewhere about a big burger.

ask rambunny, she can fill you in. there used to be all kinds of treats at this area.

My grandmother used to work the restaurant there at the motel. I can remember many hikers there as a kid, she waited on a bunch of them.

The Relax Inn, which is next door to the Exxon, accepted drops in 2010 for a $5 fee. It worked for me and was right on the trail.

On one note I would advise not using the post office in atkins. It's a hard hitch since the trail is next to the interstate

Atkins was an interesting stop on the AT during 2010. With Happy Hiker Hollow temporarily shut for 2011 and Exxon closed, this years hikers will miss a couple of gems.

Yes The Barn Resturant holds packages for free (right off trail). They have a 1 lb.double cheesburger with the works called a hiker burger and 4x4 breakfast. AYCE buffet on Sun.11-2.You can get our shuttle driver's # there also-Skip. Free refills on drinks and during hiking seasons a hiker box.Exxon says they hope to open their resturant back up this spring???????The Shell still has showers and small resupply-sandwiches .If you stay at Relax Inn they will hold the package free otherwise there is a charge.Oh and the Barn allows long term parking.

I stopped by the Exxon station Tuesday - they are open - its just the Eats n Treats that is closed. The store part of the station had a very good selection of trail foods - more selection than a typical C store. The cashier also said that the Eats n Treats part would probably open up in a "few weeks".

I think Karen had a relationship with a grocery store that was supposed to open in Bland. Any idea if that actually opened?

if you look at my trail vids on youtube, my 30 second"this is matthewski live" broadcast walking into sunrise in atkins is my best work ever with a cell cam. the birds soundtrack on the vid is amazing. atkins embodys the modern AT exsperience without being any diferent from the old towns and ways. theirs a vibb in atkins. its a combination of the big red barns pancakes and the cool interstate walk to that really neat spur where our trail heads back into the woods north of town. and its the decent down into town from the south in the morning sunrise twinkely fog that lends a full flavor entrance and exit from the town makeing it so beautiful . theirs no real town, its almost an AT waystation for us and truckers and no one else really. atkins isnt fun to stay in. it dosnt have history or the best food options. its quick and like a cool pit stop a hiker can go thru, eat ice cream on the bench, reload and move on. love the area. love it.

I looked for this on youtube because I am going through that area on I-81 later this week and I wanted to stop and hike to Chatfield Shelter. But I can't find the video. Do you have a link? Thanks!
