The Fontana Dam visitor's center says it is open May through October. Does anyone know if it is OK to park there outside of those months? We are hiking in April and want to finish at Fontana Dam. Can we leave our cars there even though they are closed?
yes, you can leave your car there if the visitor center is closed.

There is also the ranger station right near by, it's pretty safe. You can also leave your car over by the marina (adds a mile or so to the hike) but it may be more populated at the marina. (and there are the bathrooms there that are heated)
Easy hike from the dam to the marina. 2-3 miles at the most.
The Visitor's Center is very safe - the dam is patrolled year round - most likely because it looks like something Homeland Security would want to keep an eye on.
