How silly. Why would any one carry a sword. Essentially a single purpose devise. One should carry a Russian throwing shovel instead. You can get then at the BoyScout Store locally. Has all kinds of advantages. You do not have to chase squirles, Trolls, ect. Chops wood and clear trails with ease. Russian bears are terrified of these - I personally have not checked with the appalachian black bear but being a close relative I feel they will have a natrual fear of these. Best of all, It can be used to cover all those pretty "white foul smelling TP floweres behind the Shelters. I will leave it for the Sarge to caluculate the offical weight saving by eliminating Pack items it covers. I Sure others can find other uses

By the way, I lost my on the trail last year near Linville Falls. I think the Falls Troll got it there. Who know what he is doing with it. :-?

just curious i know this is the funniest thing i ever read and gave me a great laugh and is a total mockery of carrying a gun but does anyone actually carry a sword when they hike?My ex actually does carry something like a mini version of the sword below - but then, he's a pretty interesting character in a lot of ways and walks to the beat of a different drummer than most.

This weekend while on my hammmock shakedown hike. I saw guy made up like one of the teenage mutant ninja turtles. he had a foam shell attached to his pack, and a mask hanging by his side. Another had a pair on nunchucks(sp) hanging off his pack, and another who had a
Samurai Sword (Katana) stuck between his back and his pack. :D
Wish I could have gotten a pic but they were flying. They were southbound thru's.

Hey, does a 7" sheath knife count as a sword? I'll get out a pic of it as soon as possible.

Paul Bunyan

But really, who needs a sword? other than they look ultra cool. I carry about 3-5 different knives, including a sheath knife, discussed previously, a gerber knife, good for kitchen work, a foldable saw, for chopping wood, and several other knives for throwing or multipurposing.

Oh, just as thought, because of my namesake, which of these axes should i carry? Please vote for either A, B, C, or D.

It ain't hard. You start a thread, and below the post box you will find a check box to make it a poll. when you check that and hit the create thread button, it will walk you through the process.

Hi from Front Royal, VA.

I haven't been online very much lately, so I don't know if this has already showed up... SOBO hiker, Beater, is carrying a plastic samurai sword sticking out of his backpack. To go with it, he wears a flashy skin-tight red shirt with a Z slashed in the front and bear claw marks in the back.

Chuck Norris doesn't wrestle bears. Wrestlin's fer sissies. He stares them down until they play dead, then he roasts them in his rage. The sword just makes a good skewer...bear meat is too hot once it gets Chuck Norris on it. The only thing too hot for Chuck Norris is Chuck Norris.

I took my little brother on a canoe/camping trip a few years ago. He used to pitch for little league. Anyways, there was a squirrel that kept throwing acorns at us, so my little brother picks up a small rock (slightly larger than an acorn) and hurls it up into the tree. Thwack. One very dead squirrel fell into the middle of our campsite. The meat was very gamey.

Man held after sword attack on companion on Mount Baldy trail
The Associated Press
Article Launched: 10/01/2007 11:18:10 AM PDT

MOUNT BALDY VILLAGE, Calif.—A sword-wielding hiker nearly severed the arm of another man during a confrontation on a mountain trail, authorities said Monday.

Wesley Brockway, 26, of Ontario was booked for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon a short time after the Sunday afternoon attack, said Detective Sgt. Dave Barker of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Brockway remained jailed Monday. There was no Brockway telephone listing in Ontario or surrounding areas.

Three men set off Sunday to meet a friend along the trail when an argument escalated and one of the hikers started swinging a baseball bat and another pulled out a large sword, investigators said.

"Evidently, he always goes hiking with a sword," Barker said Monday. "One guy got his arm almost severed."

The wounded man, whose name was withheld, was hospitalized at San Antonio Community Hospital. His condition Monday wasn't disclosed.

Detectives were heading back up the mountain Monday to find the sword, the sergeant said.

The attack occurred in the San Gabriel Mountains 40 miles northeast of Los Angeles along the border of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.

The wounded man, whose name was withheld....So "Withheld", obviously a trail name, brought a baseball bat to a sword fight and lost. That's not surprising but he who swings first usually wins. Obviously Withheld must not have made contact so Withheld lost.

So there's only one question left ... is Withheld a Mets player?

Ti doesn'ttake an edge well, and carbon fiber would be too brittle. My guess is you probably would want a stainless steel blade, but one that has been hollowd out or has a narrow blade. I think a sword concealed in a wooden walkng stick like that movie "Blind Fury" would be the best option for a backpacker.

I think six moon designs actually makes a walking stick with a knife inside it, or something like that.

Do I carry a sword? Depends on the definition. According to Okinawan law, any knife over 3 inches is considered a sword (and therefore an illegal weapon). So yeah, I carry a sword.

Just get a big sheath knife. It isn't a sword, but it's good enough to kill all the vermin, predators, attacking wolfs, bears, cougars, mtn lions, weirdos, dogs and cats, skunks, mice, chipmunks, etc.

The amazing thing is that it is still misplaced in the humor section. There's nothing funny about the many uses a sword has on a long distance trail. I use mine to slash the mosquito netting when I have to exit my tent in a hurry after a night of partying.

Generally I would agree. However, once many of the leaves have fallen from the trees and dried out, it's astounding how much noise these bushy-tailed rodents make scrounging for their nuts. Maybe it was just a temporary population boom, but I ran across hundreds of them (I stopped counting after 80 in one day) in northern Virginia a few years ago.

Folks are talking about their "swords" and "sheaths" and this guy is talking about "scrounging for their nuts"..............This thread has run off the road passed the gutter and is stuck in the ditch....

Patrick from Indiana carried a knife that may have qualified. It weighed nearly two pounds including the leather sheath. It was over a foot long and reminded me of the knife from Crocadile Dundie "Now that's a knife." Winton convinced him to mail it home at Neels Gap. Great kid BTW.
