My sister and I are getting ready to start tackling the AT, and we're really excited. We aren't ready for a long hike, but I was hoping we could start small. We live in Bristol, very close to several outlets. I wanted to start at Low Gap, where 491 meets the AT, and hike to Damascus, but I need to know how far that is. We're looking for a two or three day hike to "train" on as we have only done day hikes before. Will that section be long enough?
Alternatively, where can I buy a good map for a reasonable price?

Holston Mtn is fairly easy. Its just a lot of flat ridge top with some rolling grades with a slight decreasing elevation until Damascus. If you start it early enough you can probably do it in a long day. Or at most with one overnighter.
If you want the ATC Trail Guide & maps, Mahonneys, Mtn Sports Ltd, Barnes&Nobles, or Books a Million as well. The Holston & Watauga River Nat Geo map is good if you are just wanting a profile of the trail and shelter locations.
