It is bad news for people here in Smyth County, Virginia. It would have been bad news for those hiking through the Hurricane Creek, Comers Creek, Hurricane Camp Shelter area this past Friday night. It reinforces the well-known advice to be careful of locals near roads. It makes me wonder how people can fear smelly, unkempt hikers in the face of what they've got growing right under their own feet. Most of all, it is a tragedy.

Was the victim a hiker? Did this happen on the AT? That story is kinda light on details. I suppose it's pretty early in the investigation but.. what happend here?

I'm not sure anyone fears smelly, unkempt hikers. Crazy people living next door to us in a small town - them maybe.

Yes, the info is sparce, but I do know that these were LOCALS, not hikers. The two young men who are charged with the murder live, as I do, very close to the trail. The murdered teen was a senior in Marion High School, I am told. It is grizly, and I would not have wanted any hiker to happen upon the locals during the commission of their crime. The area between Fox Creek and Partnership Shelter has seemed pretty benign, but maybe I was just unaware of its potential.--Kinnickinic

NOT good at all, but I didn't read anything at all connected with the AT. Did I just miss it somehow?

So sad and condolences to the family.

Agreed seems totally unrelated to the trail? Sounds like a possible personal problem? Condolences & prayer to the family!
