Hey, I'm getting ready to head south and ran accross my grocery store sale discount cards. One for Food Lion and one for Ingles, two of the more popular chain stores down south along the trail.
I hate the fact you have to have one of these cards to get the sale price. Sometimes the check out person has a "guest" card they can use for you, but it only takes a few minutes to get one of your own. And since they usually give you three cards, you can give the extras to your friends.
Excellent point....
In Manchester Ctr, VT the outfitter (EMS) gives hikers their card to use at the Price Chopper next door !!!!

Another reason to like Manchester Center - like I need one... :)
Though I'm partial to The Mountain Goat.... Ann was very nice to me.

You don't actually have to carry the cards. Give them your phone number at checkout. Some stores even let you input it yourself from the cardswipe.

I used to sign up on the spot.
My name was always "Al Fox" shortest name i could think of.
Yeah, i hate those stupid cards too.
Just opening the door to junk mail.
Use a fake address. At least the postal service recycles.

You could compile a list of all the popular grocery chains along the way, call them in advance and register yourself in their database. Then just use your phone number.
BTW, if someone has a list like this they should post it and I would be glad to compile a spreadsheet with contact information for these places. Feel free to PM.

The Albertson's grocery chain (centered in California) recently acquired Acme Markets (centered on the East Coast), a chain I happen to have a card for. While visiting my family in California, I was getting some snacks at an Albertson's when I was asked for my card. I gave the clerk my phone number, starting with the 610 area code -- and she gave me a funny look. The clerk got almost bug-eyed when the number went through, at which point I explained that the two chains are under one corporate roof.

One of the chain stores asked me if I had card - when I said I didn't I was told I could sign up at the register. When I explained to the girl I didn't want to because I didn't want to get on a mailing list. She told me that unless I planned on cashing checks in the store they didn't need any info. So I took the card without giving them any info. She "activated" the number and I was good to go.
around here, Kroger lets you use your phone number. The others do NOT.
