View Full Version : sleeping bag question
I switched from a rectangular bag to a mummy bag last year. My new bag weighs about a lb less and is rated 15 degrees warmer...That is what I love about it!!! It is a REI down 15 degree women's bag in long length...I am tall. I really don't enjoy sleeping in it though. I sleep on my side and tend to toss and turn in the night and it gets twisted around my hips. I figured a women's bag might be cut roomier in the hips but maybe not...Does anyone have any suggestions? A particular brand that might be wider in the hips? I think this bag is just a tad over 2 lb. and I really don't want to go up in weight. Planning a month long section this June.

Maybe a bag that stretches like Montbell.
Blissful

Montbell is what you need. I have the down hugger but they have a spiral construction now.
Just looked at these on line. They look great!! Kind of pricey but may make all the difference. Do you know any where that carries them so I could check it out in person? Wish REI carried them cause I have a $240 dividend this year!!!

The Trail Store in Louisville sells MontBell.
I'm a side sleeper and I find quilts much more comfortable than sleeping bags (after a 2-3 night learning curve, at least). I have a Nunutak Arc Alpinist. 20 degrees, 20 ounces. Cost an arm and a leg, but I've loved it to death and it's still my go-to bag, just for summer rather than winter. I'll defiantly buy another identical one for my next big hike.
A price point wider bag would be marmot. They have great 650 fill bags for under 200. My GF has been using the marmot angel fire long 15* <3lb she found a sale for $125 but you wont find that at REI. Also the REI bags are about the thinnest cut bags on the market. The marmot are about the thickest before going up to side or big n tall bags. Another side note is that our REI bags while lighter are not as warm as their ratings. Out Marmot bags are not he lightest (650 fill) but they are as warm as they claim. And if you have more cash you can get the lighter version.
Thank y'all for your suggestions. I am ordering the montbell super spiral. It looks awesome, and I have not read a single review on any site that wasn't a 4.5 or 5 star one...my husband says I should splurge...he doesn't have to twist my arm!! Thanks again for the suggestion!
Trying to decide between the #1 (15 degree) and #3 (30 degree) super spiral montbell. Like the fact that the #3 is nearly a lb. lighter. Have read that the temp ratings are more close to actual comfort ratings. Is this true? Think 30 degree would be okay for most of my needs??? Any thoughts from someone that has one of these bags?
I would buy the #3 and a down vest. Multi-use, multi-season, same weight. If you plan on doing a lot of trips where it's going to be below the low 20's or if you're a cold sleeper then get the #1
Thanks for the advice everyone. I got my montbell super spiral #3 yesterday and tried it out last night. I loved it!!!! So much more room to toss and turn in! Can even sit cross legged and put my clothes on in it like my old rectangular bag!!!
