Washington DC (April 1, 2011) President Obama announced today that he is adding 60 miles to the Appalachian Trail. Executive Order 23495 directs the National Park Service to add the 60 miles of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal between Harpers Ferry and Washington DC to the 2,178 mile Appalachian Trail.

so glad he found something to do TODAY
lol
Haha yeah, right. I bet he doesn't even know what the AT is.

That doesn't sound right. First of all, the C&O Canal Towpath is 184.5 miles long between Harpers Ferry and DC and second, that would detour the trail 184.5 miles straight east and then you would have to get back so another 184.5 miles. The Towpath is already part of the National Park System. I couldn't find any other info on this 'extenstion' of the Appalachian Trail...not to say it isn't true of course. The government has done stranger things in the past.

Sure he does... it's where Mark Sanford goes on vacation. :p

Those of us in Alabama, a red state, are going to be mad, since many here have been hoping for a Pinhoti Trail connection to the AT for some time. (Hold the flames, just Kidding!)

The government doesn't need a special day to spend taxpayer's money or to try to make a fool of us.

I accept the nomination but I'm gonna have to be able to disappear every once in a while without telling my staff so that I can hike the AT. :D

Either that or read through the OP posts before you comment on them.
I wonder where our diligent administrator/moderator was during those 10 hours of right wing political one liners?

As President I don't need to read. I just go by what my staff tells me and since I'm not answering my cellphone I'm not getting any news so...seems like I'm in a bit of a pickle. Maybe I'll go down to Argentina for a little break instead.

Funny :D.
I often say that about folks who buy expensive luxury sports cars and SUV's. I think that the vehicles suck the intelligence out of the (obviously) intelligent, successful folks who buy them :-?- they drive like idiots (at least around here) . I'm sure that the above doesn't apply to any Whiteblazers, though ;). Please be gentle with me and my fuel efficient, politically correct, standard shift Toyota Echo. :)

Okay, guys. Let's bring it back down a little bit here. Back to the trail...This is the humor section on a hiking website. Let's get funny. I'll begin. Two hikers walk into the woods. One of them carries a featherweight pack with only the bare minimum of supplies. The other hiker carries a pack that weighs in at a bone crushing 65 lbs...Who wants to finish this one for me. I have no idea where I was going with that one. I'm not that great at punchlines so...Anyone? Bueller?

Let's try filing this under HYOH. If someone else wants to discuss politics here, and you don't, a) shouldn't they respect your wishes, not imposing discussion of the subject on you, and b) shouldn't you respect theirs, allowing them to discuss it without you? Nothing forcing you to read political threads, or gear threads, for that matter. :)

Another way to put it is "If you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen".
I've said it before, and will probably say it again, tolerance is a two way street. We can all agree to disagree and still get along.
John Lennon said "All we need is love". Maybe not "all", but it's a good start. :)

I would think that just by seeing the title of the thread one would know this was only a joke before opening the thread. I have been sitting home for 11 days now recovering from my latest surgery and obstacle to going backpacking and i could use some humor.

Thanks Tinker. Its all good. Im off for two more weeks and will go back with a few weight limitations. May be able to day hike by late spring, but backpacking maybe late summer. I had a protruding disk in my neck that was pressed upon the my spinal cord. Not much pain but a dangerous condition that had to be fixed. A simple fall could have left me in a wheeelchair, so I am glad its fixed.

"I don't have to run faster than the bear, just faster than you" type of punch line, perhaps?

I need a big, medium rare bison cheeseburger with steak fries and a couple IPAs every once in a while too. But yeah, love is good too I suppose.

My thanks to the over 1400 readers and 45 commentators on my small contribution to April Fool's Day 2011.
I was amazed, and a little disappointed, to see the thread devolve from April Fools Day to politics and was somewhat horrified by the suggestion to move the thread out of humor.
My invocation of Obama and an executive order are what is known as an "appeal to authority" in urban mythology. While the literary device initially worked, some took the use of the names and personae as political license. I'm sorry that occurred as it ruined what was a bit of harmless fun. While hikers are not a monolithic block and we cover the entirety of the political spectrum, it would have been nice if partisanship could have been self-checked and the playful side of hikers had been more engaged.
I was also surprised no one added to the tale nor suggested other alternative "additions". There were no dungeon hostels at the Smithsonian or tips on where to resupply.
Again, my thanks to all who participated in a bit of holiday fun.

Thanks for the cute April Fool's bit. Sorry that the mere mention of the name "Obama" - OMG, I said it - has a Pavlovian effect on so many people. Sorry, too, that I stopped at figuring out the AF joke rather than adding on. Just didn't occur to me. The Capitol building as a bordello along trail, to be called the "Happy Hostel," too expensive even for the AMC (a head-shaking quote by an AMC official would fit well), comes to mind. ... Maybe discussion of the need for extensive switchbacking in the Mall?
:) I enjoyed the April Fool's joke as well. It didn't take long to figure out that it was a joke. Maybe the audience here is just not up to the OP's level of humor.
