View Full Version : Heavy Duty
I've always had a problem pushing myself away from the table, therefore, I am looking for a hammock that will hold a heavy duty hiker. I'm 6' close to 300 lb. Is there a heavy duty hammock that will hold me? :-?

The Explorer Deluxe Classic has a bottom entry and velcro closure. The Explorer Deluxe Zip has a side entry and zipper closure.
The Explorer Deluxe A-sym was designed for tall and average weight individuals between 6 and 7 feet tall. It also has the same high performance materials, proportions and protection as the smaller Expedition A-sym at an affordable price. For a few more ounces, this bigger model also provides more room and comfort than the standard size for anyone under 6 feet tall.

I would suggest a Warbonnet Blackbird. Get it with a double layer of 1.7 oz fabric. Great hammock and very strong. For around $170 its not cheap but you will be very pleased. Worst case you buy the WBBB hammock and don't like it they sell used over on Hammock Forum for almost full price in a matter of hours...

Love it. First 2 posts, one for each side. Lets the wars begin. What I will tell you cause I can add nothing to this is that people will tell you to check out this website. Its a "sister" site. Good luck

At that weight I might sleep on the ground since the weight of the larger hammock goes up considerably and the tent/pad are the same.

BlackBird 1.7 double.
I weight 285 and 6ft2. I find the BB to be roomy and very comfortable, fast easy set up.
If you change your mind and decide to sell it, they usally sell for almost full price in just a few hours on hammockforums.net. No other hammock can make that claim right now.
I've got a WBBB 1.7 dbl. I'm 6'2" ~300lbs and I sleep like a baby in it.

I hover around 400 lbs:eek:. i have hung in an ENO doublenest sinse around fall of 06. it's rated to 400 lbs. i replaced the ENO slapstraps with amsteel blue whoopie slings because the slapstraps streeeeeeeetch alot and eventually broke. absolutely no problems with the hammock body. cheap ,durable, and not really heavy. mine weighs 20 oz with whoopie slings and tree huggers.:)
Lots here to digest, besides a chicken wing, ;). I like the WBBB, especially since it is endorsed by the Heavy Duty crowd, like myself. REI has the ENO on sale for the next ten days, sounds like a good deal, by the way Spanky I grew up a Hoosier. :D

Basically, a hammock, a tarp of some sort to protect from weather, a sleeping bag, and a pad or under-quilt to insulate you underneath (since you're hanging in mid-air). A snake skin isn't necessary, it just makes setup and take-down simpler.

More or less it will depend on how you like to sleep. Different hammocks will either have or not have bug netting. You'll need to figure out if you need skeeter protection. Some don't come with a tarp and you've got to get one of these. You'll need some kind of under insulation, either an under quilt or a blue roll foam pad from wally world or your ther-ma-rest. Some kind of top insulation, a quilt or a military poncho liner or your sleeping bag.
The list: hammock, tarp, stakes, insulation: top and bottom
That's it. Depending on the temps and the weather will determine what all you have to pack. I usually pack all of these items, it's just that the tarp and the insulation will change depending on how much I need to stay warm (or cool). In the summer, in really HOT temps, I'll add a small fan to my list.
If you really want to "just try" a hammock, check out Hammock Forums. They have group hangs and most people will gladly talk your ear off about their hammocks while they are letting you try it out.
