I slept in my BB 1.O dbl for the first time last night.Didnt finish the night in it.It was comfortable and i seamed to be flat.My problem was i felt clamy and i kept shifting position.Low temps for the night were 66 and a little humid .I have a thermarest pad under me and never really covered myself with my 20 degree bag.I also slept with long underware on but kicked off the bottoms around midnight.I did get 3 hrs of solid sleep though.I guess i'm wondering if it may be a matter of me getting used to sleeping in it?After the first three hours it seamed like a restless sleep, then when i went in i seamed to sleep ok?Have others had to sleep in theres a few time before getting a complete nights sleep??Thanks,Bob Jones

Sound like you were over dressed and using too warm of bag

There are hundreds of different ways to provide bottom insualtion and top insulation in a hammcok and no one way to right for everyone. Most of us have to try several diferent combinations to find out what works for us.

Do you sleep hot or cold ? If the clothes you were wearing to sleep in are too tight you will have problems with cirulcation. How cold or warm and the humidity can all come in to play.

Anything above 40 degrees and I sleep in shorts and maybe a t-shirt.

Check out hammockforurms.net as this subject gets discussed often.

I was on a field excerise in theSahara desert in Eygyt in the 80's in July/Aug. While it got very hot during the day, it also cooled off big time at night to the point of being chilly. We were using our militrary issued down sleeping bags (very heavy bags with a cotton lining and down fill, I forget what they were rated to). One Marine complained that he always woke up in a pile of sweat. I asked how was he using the sleeping bag as most of us slepted on top of it. He said he followed the instructions on the bag to get inside the bag and zip up the bag and adjust so the hood was just open enough to breath thru. I told this that was his problem as he was basically cooking himself at night. Once he started sleeping on top of the bag he did not have any more problem.

I wasnt really sweaty,i was more clamy.Never put my bag on me and i think it was under me most of the time.My long johns were tight and made for cold weather.I guess i could have just been hot but if thats the casde, how hot will i be in late july? Thanks for the response,i'll keep on trying.I layed in it today and it felt good and i didnt feel hot.Would a 2/3 under quilt make me hotter or just keep my back from getting cold?

If it doesn't get below 60 you don't need anything under you. Some people use underquilts even when its warm but hang them a little loose for some air circulation.

I used a aluminum coated car windshield screen from wallyword last weekend as a pad. Got down to low 60's/high 50's that night. Wore my shorts and a T-shirt and had my trusty poncho liner for a TQ. I was neither warm nor cold. Woke up at 5am because a d*%% bird landed on a tree branch next to me and started singing.

Worked out as the wife was getting up to go to work so we had breakfast.

I use a pad, either a short thermarest prolite, or a short big agnes aircore, in my hammock. sometimes my back will get a little clammy, but no more than when I'm lying on the pad on the ground. I found it did take a couple nights to get used to hanging. If I'm actually hiking with my hammock (as opposed to testing in the backyard), I'm tired, and I fall right to sleep and stay that way all night. Best sleep ever.

Sounds to me like you were way overdressed. In warm weather I sleep in the lightest set of silk long johns I could find. They help keep my sleeping bag clean without making me too warm.

Did you have a tarp over your hammock, or were you open to the settling dew as the air cooled overnight?

I hiked last year for my first time ever. Used a Hennessey Hammock. Loved it. Was able to sleep pretty comfortably with just my underwear... sorry if that's TMI... it's what worked for me...
