I'm only going out for three days and two nights. I bought an ENO hammock last week. I haven't even taken it out of the stuff sack yet! So, let me list the gear I have and what I might (not) need.

Hammock
Extra straps
Thermarest pad
20 degree bag (only one I own)
bag line to add 10 degrees
I have some Tyvek I use as footprints for my two tents. I do not have a fly.

If I were to sleep on the bag (it would be warm), how much condensation/dew would it collect? Really, I'm not sure how to go about preparing. I'll keep reading threads on here, too. Thanks for any help.

Should not pick up any dew unless fog moves in.

You need to get a fly in case of rain and consider a bug net. Years ago while hiking the AT I would try to sleep cowboy style only to be forced to set up my tent due to insects

I have the same question that Karl has, if you're going to use the Thermarest underneath you, why would you sleep on top of your bag? Use the bag as a quilt on top of you and you should be fine. As for the condensation issue, depends on alot of factors, but that is why I recommend you use the bag as a quilt. Much easier to vent or remove the bag while in the hammock.

Last week I almost left the tarp off and thought better of it. I had monster globs of water dropping on it all night. It wasn't rain. Wasn't foggy. I think the trees were just spitting on me.

And a big plus on the bug net. Like the tarp I was tempted to leave the net up as the gnats and flies went to bed but there were other flying bugs (not the biting kind) that I just didn't want to sleep with.

I've heard nothing good about the ENO slapstraps if you got them. Look at other options. I'm now a big fan of the whoopiesling.

Recommend always using a tarp when hanging between trees. Tried "cowboying" several times on AT. Every time the wind would sway the tree tops, something came down - pine cones, twigs, bugs, acorns, etc. I now prefer a tarp over my head and face. You can always prop a side open with your hiking poles for more ventilation & room.

I second using the bag as a quilt. I flip my bag upside down and tuck the edges under my pad.

Might add a $2 head net from Walmart for those few times when bugs just won't quit. I keep mine in the side pocket my hammock was stuffed into.

I also pack a cheap, inflatable neck pillow ($3 @ Academy, $5 @ Walmart) which I count towards my 1 pound limit of luxury items.

+1 on this, also test yo set up before you go so you know how to hang it to get a good lie. Us the bag as a top quilt, and your your tyvek as a tarp...

A thermarest and a 20-degree bag seems excessive to me for this time of year, even if you're going to higher elevations in NC. I have a similar bag, and I don't need the extra padding underneath until the temps drop below 35-40 or so. Anything warmer than 60 or so and I sleep with the whole bag unzipped so I can ventilate at needed, and anything above 70 I sleep on top of the bag.

Depending on the temps in your area, I'd ditch the thermarest and add a tarp.

I have the ENO hammock also and have used it spring summer and fall. I use the rainfly from and old 2 man tent as my tarp and it keeps the rain and tree dropping off of me also. I also use a cheap bug net I got from Dick's Sporting goods. You will get cold if you do not have something between you and the bottom of the hammock. Good luck and have fun.
