In 1990 there was a thru hiker that had the hometown news papers sent to him at every town and after reading them he would post the FAR SIDE cartoons, 1 / day in a shelter. I was just another great thing to look forward to on the trail.

These are really good! I think this person has a career here - maybe a WB book or something. . . hope he can get it copyrighted soon.

What I want to know is why I don't find anything that interesting the the shelter registers? Last one I read had detailed info on someone's pot party at the shelter.

Thanks for puting these up.

Love the comics. 238,900 miles and he never stopped to ask for directions. Someone could use a GPS. Is there a an error message for being on the wrong side of the satellite?

2009 had a lot of good cartoon art in the registers. There was a daily original strip by one hiker. I don't remember the title, but it involved a rock character and a rabbit like character, always with an AT theme. Plus, there was a daily hiking tip from Hannah Montana, complete with dazzling colors, stickers, etc. It was interesting to read these as I went SOBO, having to page further and further back into the registers to find them.

It looks like it's not his artwork, but other various strips recaptioned to be about hiking. (not knocking these strips though, they're cute, just sayin')

Yes, the artwork is from the New Yorker, but the captions are original from Pony, hiking from Connecticut to Maine this summer. She's got quite the hiker wit. (I'm just posting for her, her blackberry sucks for this sort of thing)

Unlikely unless the author does some original artwork (cartooning). As others have noted, the images are not original and their owner (the copyright belongs to the original artist and/or The New Yorker) would have to grant permission for a republication, especially for hard print and especially for profit. The New Yorker does allow under their copyright notice anyone to use one of their cartoons in an original article, but a book recaptioning a collection would very likely draw legal action. Their use here (which is considered publishing under copyright law) may be okay under "fair use" as they aren't being used by the poster or WB for financial or publicity gain, and given the general nature of the posts which are "commentary" - but copyright law can be tricky.

Even so, it is always proper practice to credit the original author / cartoonist when using their work even if you recaption it. That means to write / type a credit line and not just rely on their signature on the cartoon.

I think the original artist name on the print is enough. Copyright laws tend to get annoyingly anal about stuff. People just need to relax more.
