For those of you who might be interested, I have just put online my pictures and journals from my AT section hike this last summer. It can be see by going to

http://www.pierce.ctc.edu/faculty/cwillett

and following the obvious link.

A few words of warning, however. This was very difficult to write up and that is why it has taken so long to get online. I do not think the journal entries will make much sense if you try to read them out of order, or just want to read about one certain area. I do not generally have much logistical information in my journals, although there is more of this stuff in the AT one than in others. So, I don't think, say, reading my entry about going from Waynesboro to Harpers Ferry, by itself, will reveal too much of use for potential hikers. That being said, use it as you see fit. If you are going to read much of it, I would definitely take a look at the "Note on the Text" link.

I've tried not to water down the entries much. I've tried to keep them as true to how I felt and thought at the moment, rather than how I might wish to portray the AT (or myself) to the public. While this might result in some hurt feelings or in creating a negative impression of myself, I thought that, in the cause of honesty, it was best to write in this manner. Indeed, there are several places in the journals where I could not believe that I could act or think in such a manner as I did. I apologize to those who might have gotten a negative portrayal in the entries. These were the impressions that I got while I was out on my hike. They are only my impressions. I have tried not to use actual names, and in many cases left even trailnames out where civility really demanded it.

On a more boring note, there are some logistical pages as well, such as gear and resupply.

From the sound of reading many of your entries, perhaps you should have hiked the AT during the off-season, as we did. Like you (and many others), we sometimes can only take so much of "trail community" atmosphere. Not that we arent social, but our hiking motives and social style may perhaps be a little different than others. I have done many section hikes along the AT during the prime hiking season. Our thru was totally different from these section hikes. We started so early that we never saw a soul for the first two months except the occasional weekend dayhiker, and even then it was only those who dared to brave the cold. It seems you prefer going in the summer, however, for whatever reason. Perhaps in order to keep your load light. Whatever the reason, I enjoyed reading your journals, regardless. Thanks for sharing them.

Maybe I'm just stupid but your pages looks just the same as usual with no AT link. Says AT coming soon with other trips...

I enjoyed reading your journal. Nice pics as well.

"Then one of the little girls told me not to get too close, as the dog bites. I picked up and played with a heavy rock and hoped that the dog might get too close to me. But, my interest waned and I realized that a kick would send it far into the woods and so dumped the rock into the fire pit."

You might have a cached copy of my old page.

I have summers off, so this is when I do most of my long distance hiking. However, now I also have part of September off and might get up to Maine sometime.
