I was recently approached to write a blog about the lightest hammock set up.

Figured I would give it a shot:

http://watermonkey.net/2011/09/08/th...ammock-set-up/ (http://watermonkey.net/2011/09/08/the-lightest-hammock-set-up/)

I wonder what everyone else's thoughts are.

My best,

Raul

Thank you! I've bookmarked your site and plan to have a lookaround later.

I'm also 5'4", and interested in what hammocking mods you might have come up with (for those of us on the shorter side of average). :D

Major mod is just getting a short top quilt. Everything else you can use the single layer hammocks, dynaglide whoopies, and go with 2/3 under quilts as they provide great coverage for us shorties!

Well thought out and detailed article!
"I haven’t layed on a Grand Trunk Nano hammock so I’m not sure of the comfort that this hammock provides."
I have one and it's not much.
My pack weight stays under 8% of my body weight, so I can spare a few ounces for a lot more comfort.

really nice job. wondering what the pad is for... unless it is just for under the feet i would wonder if a winter yeti without the pad was the way to go, comfort and (hopefully) weight wise, as well. by the way, my nano (140 lb 5-6" me) has held up perfectly well.

Glad you guys liked the blog.

Pad is for the legs. The yeti is a 2/3 underquilt if you dont have a pad you will have some chilled legs. I've tried it.

Winter yeti is the same size just 1.5" thicker. I have it and use it for temps 30*F and below. Got that yeti down to 3*F

Great article, Raul. It's nice to see this broken down and based on commercially available products. Any chance that you could provide links to the various components?

CousCous: What would you recommend for a more comfortable alternative to the Grand Trunk Nano? Please provide link, weight, cost, and why you think it's a good weight/comfort trade-off.

Seem to have me confused with a concierge, but I will say I find my HH Ultralite Backpacker Asym with mod 4 from 2QZQ, GT Ultralight, GT Skeeter Beeter, and Byer Amazonas all more comfortable than my GT Nano.

I'm surprised to read the negative comfort comments on the nano. I've been hammocking for years now... I just bought the Nano for my half hike this summer PA-ME, and was more than pleasantly surprised. I'm 6'2", length was no problem, and I love the way the fabric stretches to comfortably accommodate any position without changing your position in the hammock. I guess we all have our own tastes.

im 6-3 and the Nano is a very unconformable hammock, but i feel the same with Warbonnet. i think once you have a hammock that works, the knockoffs just don't work.

The Warbonnet Traveler 1.1 Single Layer (for those of us sub: 180lb's or so) is a simple hammock but large and wide enough for someone who is 6ft to lay asymm. You can have a 9-10oz hammock with suspension + approximately 2 ounces for a diy tulle bugsock for keeping out the critters.
