I'll be hiking this section in a few weeks & I noticed that is this area IS getting rain. Are the water levels back to normal or are the sources still running slow? Also any shelter or trail concerns/updates would be appreciated.

Thanks

After the rains we just got all should be good as far as water goes.

A few weeks ago it rained 3 inches, and a couple days later I was day hiking between Spivey Gap and Erwin and there was no water, just a trickle in the "reliable" sources. This area got only got 3 inches from "Irene" not as much as what was expected. We are just getting a little rain here and there, and have not had a good soaking rain to replenish the springs. I'm leaving this morning for an Iron Mtn Gap to Damascus hike, I'll let you know next week what I find. I expect it to be dry.

I'm not trying to be disagreeable or anything but I just hiked Spivey's Gap to Erwin last Thursday and didn't have any problems finding water. The seasonable seeps were dry as expected but in that 11 mile stretch there were at least 4 water sources that were usable.

Tip: If you're in this section and get in a bind there are a few unlisted water sources off the trail about .25 mile. You can take the Temple Hill trail and within a quarter mile there is a stream on the left.

You can also take the woods road that goes off to the left at Temple Hill Gap and hike down it a ways and there's a pretty good sized branch that's always flowing.

Water sources between Double Springs Shelter and Watauga Lake Shelter have reportedly been dry, with the exception of a very slow flow at Vandeventer Shelter. It is about 21 mi between Double Springs and Watauga Lake Shelters with a roadless stretch of 16 mi in between. Yes, it has rained some recently but not sure if it has been enough to replenish low springs.

See you on the trail,
