What are some of the good tips to stealth camping?

Don't get caught. :D

Stealth camping doesn't necessarily mean illegal. Any time you camp outside of a designated area it can be considered stealth camping. In some areas, it just happens to be illegal.

That said, if you are camping illegally, the easiest way to avoid getting caught is to setup camp late (closer to sunset the better) and leave camp early (closer to sunrise the better). And to avoid camping at illegal spots that are close to legal sites. IOW, don't setup camp 0.25 miles from a designated site at 4pm.

Tip 1: Set up late, as posted.

Tip 2: Get further off the trail.

Tip 3: Go up hill rather than down hill.

Tip 4: Be quiet

Tip 5: Don't make fires.

Try to find spots that have already been worn down or created, instead of making new ones and further impacting the forest. Clean up after urself, down leave any trash, fire ring, cig butts or anything else to have evidence that you were there.

Many times there are good "stealth" spots a quarter mile or so after shelter turn offs. Sometimes it pays to keep going for 5 or 10 minutes as often others have decided to keep going in the past.

Lastly if you stealth you should do it alone or in very small groups.

Especially easy if you have that nice Coyote Brown Ultralite. Blends right in with the trees. ;)

I usually didn't stealth(out of view from trail and others) but if you do, be careful. The few times I did was in the GSMNP, I don't do shelters.
