Hi all!
Veterans Day weekend 2011 I and two friends decided to hike the AT through Maryland starting at Pen Mar and ending in Harper's Ferry. Ending in Harper's Ferry is so much more enjoyable than ending at Pen Mar: beer, food, etc. Did I mention beer? ;)
We stayed at the Super 8 in Thurmont, MD which was only about 15 - 20 minutes from the trailhead across the state line. A big thank you goes out to Patricia, General Manager there. She allowed all three of us to park our cars at the Super 8 for our four-day trip! Without her help, I'm not sure what we would have done with our cars. While there's no guarantee they won't get vandlized at the Super 8, we felt the risk was much lower than leaving them in some park at night.
We used the Thurmont Cab Company to pick us up at the Super 8 and drop us off at the trailhead in PA.
Once we hit Harper's Ferry and pigged out at Private Quinn's Pub, we got ahold of Laurel at the Teahorse Hostel in Harper's Ferry who provided us a ride back up to Thurmont and the Super 8 at a very reasonable rate. While she typically provides shuttle service directly to Pen Mar Park, she was gracious enough to take us back to the Super 8.
Without the help of these three establishments -- Super 8 Thurmont, Thurmont Cab Company, Teahorse Hostel -- our AT hike would not have been as enjoyable and memorable. Thank you all for your help, assistance, and flexability.
If you ever plan to hike the 40 mile AT through Maryland, do yourself a favor. Head south from Pen Mar and use these establishments to ease your logistics.
