For anyone interested in setting up a Hennessy Hammock with Hex rainfly on the ground (without trees), I put together a tutorial you can see here: http://wewalksoftly.blogspot.com/2011/10/setting-up-hennessey-hammock-as-tent.html.

Normally my hikes are in wooded areas, but I was interested to see if the hammock could be easily set up using hiking poles in place of trees. I was impressed that the structure is actually so sturdy.

Very interesting. Your idea looks like it would work for just about any hammock system out there. Thanks for a well thought out idea.

Hey Karl, not sure what you're getting at here. I was just trying to show how a hammock can be used in places without trees. Didn't intend to offend.

What an astoundingly unfortunate thing to choose to say.

Stats posted something useful, and you choose to post something that was the opposite of useful...

knock it off.

Not something you wuld want to use often but I could probably dream up a senario or two. Unless there are bugs you are probably better off to just set up the tarp and sleep on the ground, this would elimnate the risk of destroying the hammock material.

Your ability to express yourself is really awe inspiring. Do you have a blog or do public speaking? You should. The world needs to more people like you. Thanks for keeping it real. XO

XOWow, what kind words, Nathan. I have just started a blog that I'll update on my thru in March 2012 (http://wewalksoftly.blogspot.com). I've taught for years and love it. Feel comfortable in the classroom but am so awkward in front of the camera. My 10-yr-old daughter after seeing the video was embarrassed by my many "uh's" and "um's". I felt the content of the tutorial was worth some personal embarrassment, however. Thanks again!

I am going to ignore some of the posts - KK I do not think you should reply, I am guessing you left something out....

Bottom line HH can work on the ground if you are prepared to crawl in. And that big tarp? do we need that? - I just blew it out two years ago - cause it was too big. I give up whats wrong with the one that it comes with?

I give up whats wrong with the one that it comes with?Good question, WOO. The idea to use the big hex tarp came to me because of the symmetry of the guy lines (one side is a mirror image of another) and the fact that the hex fly has three tie points at each end. (From a physics point of view, three points makes for very stable static equilibrium.). It might be possible to rig it with the smaller fly. I have a couple in the basement; do you want me to try to figure out a way to make it work for you, or were you asking from a purely academic or hypothetical point of view? It'd be fun to try - or present it to my physics students as a practical application of Newton's laws.

(From a physics point of view, three points makes for very stable static equilibrium.)I should have finished my thought. I'm pretty sure the small (original) fly has four tie-down points (two on the sides and two on the ridgeline ends), making it difficult to achieve high stability. (3 doesn't divide evenly into 4.). However, now that I ponder it, the asymmetry of the fly may make it possible to do. Well, now you've got me hooked. I'll experiment with it in the next few days and let you know what happens.

No when I picked up one second hand the tarp was shipped backwards and did not cover the hammock so I flipped it over and thus ends the issue.

I have yet to try this on the ground - Next rainstorm in the cold.
