Tough choice. The four towns out west are in great areas. Lots of towns not on the list. Oh well, voting for Damascus.

Damascus doesn't hold a candle to Cooke City, MT. I voted.

Hammondsport is not a bad town either, my bro lives near there. The Finger Lakes Trail goes right by there, if the charm of a small town is a Trail near-by! I voted for Damascus, though, as Trail Days the past 2 years has been a blast!

Damascus is way ahead of Cooke City at the moment.

no mention of the Creeper Trail which really put the town on the map. 100 times more folks come for the Creeper Trail than they do for the AT

Anybody who has ever rented a bike from one of several rental shops and biked the creeper into town -- and seen how many people are shuttled to the starting point every hour on the hour -- knows that this is true.

So this past summer, I hiked from the Roans to about Troutdale, VA anyway, I hiked from Iron Mtn Shelter to Damascus in 1 day - not the biggest hike ever, but I did the 26 miles with a few teenagers that were proud of such a long distance day and they were hungry -- anyway, I went into Quincey's Pizza just about closing time (I was about 40 minutes ahead of my crew being 44 years old and quite a bit faster than 17 year olds;)) -- anyway, they were getting ready to close the kitchen. I told them of the hikers on the way and they said, "no problem" we'll feed them when they arrive. Probably about 9:30 pm, we ate about 4 pizzas there (I also drank about 3 beers and shot some pool). What a fantastic business - totally indicative of Damascus friendliness --- fyi, we stayed at the Hiker's Inn that night with Lee and Paul -- absolutely great people -- what a treat. Can't say enough good about Damascus.

I voted for Damascus. I've spent time in both Port Townsend and Beaufort, and in all honesty I like Beaufort best of the three. I love the low country, but let's face it, this is a hiker website not a seafood website.

The Californians and the New Yorkers are getting organized and voting heavily for their towns. As many of you know, Damascus is a remote community in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, and would appreciate your support. Please vote as often as you can (every 24 hours is allowed) until January 31st. Thanks. http://m.budgettravel.com//contest/americas-coolest-small-towns-2012,11/

Damascus has been getting my vote. All the towns sound really cool. Cooke city is the only other one I have been to, and feel in love with as I'm sure you would with all the rest, but from a hikers point of view, how can a town on the Appalachian Trail not be the coolest? As a family (a community of hikers) it is "our" town.

Dot's has great cheeseburgers (which I can't eat anymore :( - gout). I was there at Trail Days in 2009. The staff at the breakfast (forgot the name of the place) was friendly despite all the rowdy hikers (and party crashers - there were plenty of them there, just to get in on the general mayhem, I guess).

It's probably friendlier when there aren't as many people, but generally, the local business people seemed to enjoy either the hikers or their own day in the sun, so to speak.

.......then there was Lone Wolf

Nah, he's ok, I guess. I just said hi to him and ordered my cheeseburger. Some guy tried to pick me up (or he might have been goofing around). Dot's was pretty interesting that day. :D

I have just placed my vote, out of a sense of duty to help the town that means a lot to all of us....

what's the prize?

Looks like the winner gets bragging rights, and a great advertising slogan.

Another reason I feel obligated to vote.

I am somewhat worried by this also. Once a place gets recognized as " The Coolest Small Town in America", will it become the opposite of what made it "cool" in the first place?

The poll was not on a hiker website. And even if it were, Cooke City would CRUSH Damascus. Cooke City is squashed between the the Beartooth and Absoraka Wilderness areas. The place is C-R-A-Z-Y wild.

Tripp and others, thanks for voting. We are trying to stay in the game, but unlike some of these other "small" towns, which have a population of nearly 10,000, there are just a few of us here and the only tourism program we have is Lone Wolf standing on Laurel Avenue and yelling "Go away!" when an out-of-state car comes by.

10,000 residents or less *correction - "fewer", but I guess English is changing :D

Anything readily broken up into individual units used to be many or few. Sand, water, air, etc. is more and less, because there is no such thing as "an air", or "a sand", though you can count grains of sand and have many or few grains. No wonder everyone's trying to simplify English. :)

Now, "Me and him", as a subject, drives me nuts, because "Me and him are going to town." actually says, "Me is going to town" and "Him is going to town". Besides, just out of courtesy, the other person should be first, so "Him and me", though incorrect, at least is more pleasent.

But only strange people waste their days thinking about such things.:-?
