Hi All,

I am in the market for a Top Quilt from Adam at Hammock Gear. Either the 20 degree or the 40 degree Burrow. I know about the advantagse of overstuff as well. My question is I have a 2/3 Yeti Winter UQ (rated 0). And use a cut in half Z-lite pad. What degree TQ should I use for the entire trip. Would the 40 degree burrow be sacfice, with a 15 degree Reactor Liner or should I go ahead and get the 20 degree. What are your thoughts and concerns as I am starting my thru-hike March 3rd, 2013. Thanks

Grits

Depends on if you sleep warm or cold. Check out http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=87 maybe you can find some help there.

The 20* is gonna be too hot if temps get much above 50*, but you'll love it if the temps drop down into the 30's or lower. If your setup has bug netting, you can always kick the TQ off until you get cold enough. I have a 20* TQ that I use in my WBBB which has integrated bug netting and I would rather err on the side of too much top-quilt than not enough - there have been times when I'm soaked, tired, dehydrated, in danger of hypothermia and the 20* TQ felt might nice.

I am using a 40 degree top quilt and 40 degree underquilt for my 2012 thru hike. But I am not leaving till May 1st NOBO. 20 degree would be a little much during the summer. If you are starting early just add clothes and go with the 40 degree. Then when it warms up. Send your warm clothes home. Then when it starts to get cold get them back.

Im section hiking from springer to NC at the beginning of May and was wondering if a 50f burrow from hammock gear would be ok? Im not sure how cold it gets at certain altitudes.

I plan on thruing this year as well and im using a 40 top quilt and a 20 underquilt. We plan on leaving Apr. 9. I added a fleece liner and heavyweight baselayers for the colder times. So far ive had this setup to low 30s and have been warm, but whats right for one is not right for all. If i were starting early march i would most likely go with 20 top and underquilts. Depending on how much that liner adds it might work with a 40 top quilt. Im sure if you told adam your situation he could help you and possible let you return it if you try it and think you need more warmth. Or if you had the money you could buy both and switch out when you send off winter gear.
