wbdent I have gone thought the shelter listing that ADLHA puts out in the 2005 Companion and cross referenced it to what we had on WhiteBlaze. In order to put this listing in a message format and include it in the Articles on WhiteBlaze I had to remove the photo link and the Google search buttons in the listing.

wbdent There are also some shelters/lean-to’s that were not identified in the Companion that I need some help from you all to let me know if there shelters still exist or have been taken down. Here is a list of the shelters I need help with:

wbdent Pretty much everything in the listing with a question mark either is questionable on whether it still exists or whether it should be included in the listing.


wbdent I have also left the huts in the listing but did not include the mileages. To update the mileage each year would not be easy because ALDHA does not include the mileages because they do not include the huts in the Companion because I am assuming they do not consider them part of the <ST1:pAppalachian Trail</ST1:p experience. So here is a question for you. Should I remove the huts from the listing as well from our WhiteBlaze listing?

The Boy Scout shelter ( just before Catawba shelter) was still there in the fall. In fact it had been refurbished.

on another site Kerosene had written on 11/16/03: "A new 6-person wood-frame shelter that replaced the metal monstrosity. Located right on the Trail and only a mile from the road. No water source available here but there is a good one just before the Catawba shelter about two miles north." The old shelter that was there when I passed in 04/03 was the Boy Scout Shelter and the new shelter apparently built later that summer on the same site is now called the Johns Spring shelter. Sorry for the confussion.

I believe the Smarts Mountain Cabin, NH is the Ranger (Firewardens Cabin) so it is listed twice

Hi y'all,

I'm not sure if this is still the case, but in January the NEW Roaring Fork Shelter just north of Max Patch was not yet built (my husband could see what looked like a floor from the trail when he hiked by), and the OLD Roaring Creek Shelter was still there. As of two weeks ago, we were walking on the nearby Buckeye Ridge Trail and we saw many supplies in what we think is the "construction staging area" for the new shelter site. We didn't go by the actual shelter site, but from the look of the supplies lying around we assumed it wasn't finished, yet.

The reason I mention this is because the OLD shelter is an additional 3.9 miles north of what is listed. This winter we encountered several thru-hiker's doing a long day, heading into bad weather, planning to stay at the new shelter and not realizing that they had 4 extra miles to do.

If you know that the new shelter is actually finished, please let everyone know. Likewise, if you've been by there recently and it's not yet done, please mention it to others.

Just a visual suggestion, but the table boarders look kind of goofed up.

Compared to the real work (which couldn't have been fun) it is a small thing. Very good work!

DataBook has the Trail at 2,174.9. After Hurd Brook, the order should be Daicey Pond CG, water, .1 mile off the trail (but the two AT shelters have been removed), Katahdin Stream CG, water, on the Trail, The Birches, no water, .25 miles off the trail. The 'miles from Springer' column should have an "as of such-and-such date" asterisk. Baxter Peak is 5.2 miles from the Katahdin Stream trailhead.

As you head north through the campground, you leave the AT and cross the footbridge on your right towards the Ranger's cabin. Then you continue on up his driveway and out to the perimeter road, take a left, walk down the road 150 yards or so, and the birches are back in the trees a bit on the west side of the road. You have to register and pay for the Birches at KSC, which is why it's they're the same mileage in the DataBook. I think I listed The Birches as .2 off the Trail in the Companion entry.

Catawba Mountain Shelter is still there. Johns Spring Shelter replaced Boy Scout Shelter.

Note that Wilcox North in MA has questionable water late in the season. Also note that Bascom Lodge has free water for hikers, but is closed from mid-October to mid-May.

There is no shelter at Dennis Cove, mile 409.3

There is a shelter at Bascom Lodge, Mt. Greylock, MA. It is - (Thunderbolt Shelter) They don’t tell you about the nearby shelter that is supposed to be used in an emergency only, cause they want your money, stay anyway. It does say TN and I have not touched it. That was why I ask if it was suppose to be NC because I have it listed as TN. Well as long as it is right.

try playing around on www.cs.utk.edu the University Of TN at Knoxville has an excellent listing for trail shelters, elevation, distance, quite a good site.

I am wrong. It certainly appears to be in Tennessee.

I did a look on my Topo and it is TN. So I changed it back to TN.

2) Springer Mt Shelter, at 0.2 0.2, seems to be left off this list.

b) I assume the milages are up to date. I use a spreadsheet version of the 2003 data book. Is there a current version of the data book in spreadsheet form?

Go to the bottom area of the page in the middle to where it says "Download File" and clcik on it. I had the same problem when I went there a while back and it took me a little be too so don't feel bad.
