Going to traveling through Virginia and NC in June. Looking for a 3-4 day hike on the AT to test my gear and myself before a thur attempt next year. Where should my first taste of the trail be?:jump
Erwin to Hot Springs would be a nice sample. Easy to get to and from, you get to meet Miss Janet and Hot Springs is a wonderful little trail town. Of course I am bias as I live nearby, but could help you out if needed!
if you live in NY like it seams you do, head to the AdiRIANdacks and junp on the Northville Placid trail. its a nice valley/rolling hills trail.

The Northville Lake Placid Trail doesn't have the change in elevation that the AT typically has. (still a good trail, just stays in the valleys).
Looking for a good multi-day loop in Virginia or North Carolina? There are plenty of good ones in Shenandoah National Park. The best parts of this part are off the AT. Likewise, Great Smokies National Park.

Whenever I need a 3 day hike, I always head up to Standing Indian Campground, park the van in the back country parking lot and head up the Kimsey Creek Trail to Deep gap and then hike the AT back to my car. You can do this in 2 days if you hike all day, but you can easily break it up into 3 days. It isn't too strenous, has some nice sections of trail, good views and Albert Mtn! Continue on past through Wallace Gap to Winding Stair Gap and then hike back south on the trail to your car.
The advantages here are you can avoid shuttles and if you need to bail out, there are plenty of places to do so and end up back at your car.
