"...there was a gentleman living in New York City a few years ago who was 115. He was the oldest man living in New York and he was doing quite well,he lived on his own, got around with no trouble and could deal with anything that came his way. People asked him of course, 'what is your diet, what are you eating?'

He'd narrowed his diet down, from the ages of 90 to 115 his diet consisted mostly of three gallons ofThunderbird Wine a week and bread fried in fatback. When they asked him, 'why don't you fry your bread in bacon?' He said, "bacon's too lean."

Here's a man who knew exactly what his body needed and he lived a rich, full life on what one would think is f****** rocket fuel. And if he'd gone to a doctor, that doctor would have been, 'what the f*** is the matter with you?! You're out of control! You know what!? You're going to have to start eating vegetables!' And he would have, and he'd have been dead in a week." -Lewis Black

I remember a Barry's World cartoon when I was kid. They were interviewing this "old man", and said you smoke, you drink, you chase women, what is your secret? His reply was I an really only 29. Of course Elf yours is a true story and mine is only a comic strip, so who knows.

I drove a Peugot manual gearbox in Europe.
I didn't have any real trouble on that side of the road, except going the "wrong" way around roundabouts messed with my head.
Didn't help the indicator was on the wrong side and I turned the wipers on every time I exited the roundabout.

At the risk of getting away from the thread drift... I was going with HB's advice of Vivobarefoot Ultra Pures. Are they less slippery HB?

I bought a pair on sale, but haven't had the chance you actually try them out yet. Was always debating about Crocs and the weight. So I felt this was compromise splitting the weight in half.

We did the North Georgia Winery Crawl a couple of years ago. There are about 10 wineries between N. Georgia and the borderline of North Carolina. The area has similar temperatures and a growing season that is only short a few days of the ideal weather that France, California, etc. enjoy for the growing season. The area (N. Georgia/Clay County, NC) is actually under consideration for its own appellation (not to be confused with Appa-LAY-shun, as in Trail). I know that would astound Rasty to hear me say something actually knowledgeable like that :)

We mostly use roasted garlic for cooking at the restaurant (Except Asian food which needs the tang from sautéed garlic). We take 1/2 gallon of peeled garlic cloves and add 1 cup of olive oil and then enough white wine to cover. Then bake in the oven with a cover until evenly roasted. Then while it's hot blend in a food processor until it forms a thick paste. We use this for all the pasta dishes as it speeds up the cooking process and have less risk of burning the garlic.

Found this video.
Certain it's from the USA (I don't know anyone here with lemurs in their backyard.
The roo is obviously having fun, but watch the back leg action.
Big roos have middle claws that can tear through sheet metal (I've seen proof).
If the roo decided to "play" with the dog, he would disembowel it, even one that small.

For some reason the program I'm using won't recognise the PDF format of my Olympus camera handbook so I have that as a project for tomorrow along with the ALDHA guide.

It's my worst emotion at the moment. Complicated by one or two issues that I won't divulge.
Some things here have changed since the committment to hike have been made,
Not between me and mine, but other problems around us.

There's never a good time to leave a partner is there?

Hate to turn serious in the cafe but I think you will be surprised Oz. When I attempted my hike last year I had the same worries. I had been married 43 years at the time and wondered how my wife could possibly get along without me. She did much better than me. I think she was almost disapointed that I came home early. Her and my daughter had all sorts of plans to remodel rooms in the house and by coming home early I interrupted all their plans.

Everyone's situation is unique. It is a sacrifice to hike long distances (for everyone). The best one can do is assume the hiker is aware of said sacrifices. I plan on being more supportive and less opinionated if and when I comment on such struggles in the future. Your perspective adds to the discussion. Mine just judged the discussion.

Perhaps, but still, your core point (as I saw it) was that the couple (pair, whatever) is more important than the individual. I believe that stands on it's own and is a proper focus. The rest of it falls from there and as others pointed out, each situation may be different. YMMV?

Yes That was my point. It was not to judge people, but rather encourage people to work together and be mindful of the other person (both the person hiking as well as the person left behind).

WR has a job in the winter being a raft guide or doing some other type of guide work in some warm location, or something equally awesome like that, so she's not really in contact with WB much right now. So, Oz, Milkman, and Mountain Mike!
I'm so psyched up for your visit, I can't wait!!
Here are some options you can choose from:
Hiker Fool Festival in Franklin
supper at Dillard House in Dillard, GA - can't miss that!
Winery visit - 10 minutes from the cabin
Whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River
Visit to Helen, GA (tourist trap but you might like it)
Visit to NOC outfitters
visit a cave with garnets embedded all over the ceiling
waterfalls outside of Franklin
pet some friendly chihuahuas
maybe dayhike with us on Sunday or Monday

They all sound great!.
No preferences although I'm not a winery type person and I think Daniel's still more into beer as well.

I'll let the others decide. I'm just going to be a section hiker.

I keep seeing Astro's 'you have to have good skills' signature line, and thinking... here I am in eastern New York State, all I have is catskills... :-?

And even my cat skills aren't that great, trying to find a place to dig a hole among all the rocks and roots can be a challenge. (And what *do* people do when the ground is frozen?) [For the sake of tying into another of today's threads...]

Oh I suggested he make that his Signature... I find it funny because its about a teenager who does not have skill's trying to make sense of the world... very funny movie.
