Jim Beam has a new label out called "Devil's Cut"....try it, you'll like it. I bought a couple of mini's for the FH Trail because they were cheaper than the regular Jim Beam, $1.09, really liked them, went to the store to get a larger bottle and was surprised at the price, not cheap, about $18 more than regular JB, guess they were selling the minis cheaper to get folks to sample it.

Well since we're tellin' war stories.......when I was 19 and before we were married my ex's grandpa used to get me and her brother up at 7 damn o'clock in the morning and pour us a glass of Old Grandad - about the equivalent of 4 shots and make us shoot it down and chase it with a 16oz tall boy can of Michelob. I'd be damn near hallucinating for about an hour and then pass out and go back to sleep. To this day It's still my favorite. Maybe that's why I married that girl. Maybe that's why we divorced.

I am out for the day. Going to look for mini bottles and mini zip-locks at CVS. My hygiene kit is at 16oz. It has a sink, Dr Bronner's soap, loofah, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, Absorber towel cut in half, washcloth, tp, Purell, and shovel. I hope to lower it to about 12oz.

Bird Brain uses soap.... now that is funny-is it Ivory?

I will grant you the humor, but...

The Ivory Woodpecker is one of the saddest stories of not appreciating a magnificent bird. It went extinct because Singer needed boxes for their sewing machines, so they clear cut their last habitat.

I use Dr. Bronner's unscented (0.8 oz in eye dropper bottle).

BirdBrain

Probably wont have to look far. Should be down at the liquor store. Shouldn't be too hard to find - unless you been hittin' the minis already. "Out for the day" makes a person wonder.:-?

I quit drinking before it was legal for me to drink. Drank more than most do in a lifetime between the ages of 10 and 19 though. Between that and some other stuff that will remain unmentioned, I was out for years.

77 = 28ish, 92 = 36ish
In ULA sizing I am borderline large/medium for straps and (a couple of weeks into hike) large side of medium for hipbelt.
Did the whole Bib with large hipbelt but pulled so tight in the end occasionally "popped" the buckle with sideways twist.

We had to hold our hands behind our back, recite the menu, nod our heads & use lots of eye contact to communicate. *Smile* Lots of smiling!:D Of course, with our hands behind our back, we had to remember what everyone at the table ordered... Roast beef Au jus, anyone?

I am glad that I read the reviews and went a size down. They are almost too big at one size down. Thanks HB for the tip.

I was always on the fence about crocs, due to the the weight, so I bought some of these since they were so much lighter. I missed that sizing tip when I ordered mine, but on the bright side that makes them easier to slip on.

Earth shoes..... I forgot all about those!! They looked like big blobs on ur feet. I was a "relish girl" (don't laugh) working at a high class place on New Found Lake in NH. I was promoted to waitress before the summer ended. Woot! Another waitress just got her first pair of earth shoes.. OMG.

We had to hold our hands behind our back, recite the menu, nod our heads & use lots of eye contact to communicate. *Smile* Lots of smiling!:D Of course, with our hands behind our back, we had to remember what everyone at the table ordered... Roast beef Au jus, anyone?

HM, you learned a lot of valuable skills from that job (even though they might have appeared a little over the top). That is why raising the minimum wage is such a terrible idea. There are so many valuable life long skills teenagers can learn from having a part time job, especially in fast food and low end service jobs like that.
My dad was a general contractor and he always told me that learning how to work was more valuable than any money he would ever pay me. Of course I did not appreciate that then, now many years of life experience later I do.

My sink weighs 1oz, my loofah weighs .4oz, my wash cloth weighs .2oz, and my shovel weighs .6oz. I will keep the 2.2oz.

In the spirit of full disclosure, my shovel used to weigh 2.8oz. My hygiene kit now weighs. 13.8oz.

Weight is beside the point, just stuff you will not need. Take it if you want but will probably send it home soon.

I don't mind talking hiking... I just took a spin around TJ's . There are a bunch of hikers out there now, in Feb. They are hiking in snow!! Beautiful pics are showing up on from the trail all dressed in white. "Talk" about from- people having to go to the hospital from blister problems to finding Mt. Dew & oreo's in the shelter's, 2- wonderful trail angels picking up their stinky butts for a 10 mile ride into town.:sun If there's one thing I've learned lately about the AT and hiking it- this trail is heavily supported by people, in every imaginable way. If someone is looking for solitude or putting real survival skills to use, forget it, the AT is NOT the trail for you... just sayin. :)

Ha Ha!! Totally see how you could read it like that, I'm sure their are trail angels, & the like, picking up their "other" stinky butts. lol. The hikers that I was reading about openly admitted that they all smelled pretty bad. ;)

I have been around lots of hikers, I really don't mind their funky smell. BUT, there was one group that I met right outside of Outdoor Trails, in Daleville, waiting for a trail angel to pick them up. I was chatting with them for a while... nice as they could be but I had all I could do not to hold my nose, while talking to them. I have never had that happen before or since. RS, you are young if you were still in school for the first one! I was at my first job out of college at Texas Instruments and heard about it in the Computer Room (yeah we still had those back in the early 80s). Was in Florida visiting with my family when I watched the next successful one take off. Second crash I was camping in East Texas with my oldest son. Things like an impression that you remember where you were.

I remember watching the 1st one live. I was yelling at the guy calling out the coordinates after it blew up. I'm like, Doesn't anyone realize that thing is gone? Finally the newsman says something like, "well, we have obviously had some sort of malfunction" or something like that.

The 2nd one I remember thinking, they warned about the possible effects of Styrofoam banging of the heat shield on the very 1st space shuttle launch in National Geographics magazine many many years ago. What we had there was a failure to communicate or fund or something.

Both were very sad.

On the black eye note:
I don't see it that way. Exploration requires risk. On the level that space exploration operates ,the risk on a scale of 1-10 is 11 , you don't get involved without an acceptance of the very real possibility of failure. I admire each and every one of the persons involved. All that choose to be a part of pushing our boundries as humans via space must make the decision to be a part of history be that in success or failure. This is true from the highest positions -to the entry level positions. There are no small players in the space game, much like the food chain they all play a part and they all feel the high of success...also the disgrace of failure. Reward is not without risk. There are times when a risk must be looked at, contemplated and eventually a decision must be made- try or not? I for one am glad that it is in our nature to try and keep on trying, reguardless of mistakes made prior and even more importantly mistakes that may be to come. -AIM HIGH

My biggest concern is that the Space Program is only one that our current administration is willing to cut. It provides so many good hi-tech jobs, and we get all kinds of neat by products like Tang, calculators, emergency blankets, etc..

You forgot about the ultimate goal of getting our species off of this rock.

In a thousand years, assuming our species is still around, all of this nonsense that we find ourselves worrying and arguing about won't matter. It will be condensed down to footnote in the history books stating that the time we live in now marked the beginning of space exploration.

So would it kill you guys to go without some sleep and throw a brick in your pack?

Sometimes I think worrying about pack weight is way overated. Just start hiking and see what you use and what you don't.
If it's anything other than a first aid kit and rain gear and you haven't used it in a few days you probably won't need it. Might also include cold weather gear depending on when you start. I started my hike with around 28 pounds with food and water and saw people hiking with over 60 pounds. They were just as certain they needed everything as I was. I dropped 4 pounds when I hit Hiawassi.

Well you either do it the hard way by making mistakes and eventually learning from it.
Or you try doing it the easy way by gaining knowledge from what others have already done, and do it right the first time.

The purpose of an education/training (of any type) should be to learn from others what works and what doesn't, and therefore avoid the pain of the "school of hard knocks". Of course it is also very applicable to raising children too.

BB, sorry about that I took you a little too literal there.

Since you want an example lets go with this one. My 10 year old son (at the time) I are starting down Blood Mountain, GA in the rain and the rocks are really slick. He is leading the way and responsible for watching the white blazes. We keep going down these slippery rocks, and I start thinking is this still the trail. After a while of not seeing anymore white blazes, it becomes obvious we are off the AT. So now we have to climb back up the slippery rocks to get back to the AT. Sure enough we finally get back up there, and there is a double blaze on the rocks pointing to a tree and the AT path out. Sitting there to take a (well deserved) break and up comes a couple about to head down the rocks just like we did. I (nicely) tell them that the AT is over by the trees (and not to repeat the same mistake we made), so they gratefully head that direction. So we had experience and they had wisdom.
