That's because there IS order and structure and patterns in everything! (I'm an engineer - it's all about pattern recognition)

I fully agree. The fact that there is structure and order in everything proves something. Things left to themselves do not create order. Things left to themselves decay and become chaotic. This is a foundational truth that is being blatantly ignored because of the uncomfortable thoughts that come with the recognition that things did not just happen.

Hi HM!
That's about the second day out on a SOBO hike on the Bibbulmun.
It's the area very close to Perth.
Tree on right (trunk showing only) is a red gum I think.
A couple of grass trees (used to be called blackboys but that is not PC nowadays - would imagine less so in the USA) and a cicad(?) in the foreground.
Not a lot of trees as a lot of granite as you can see.
Quite dry area and gravelly fairly barren soil.

I am using the one on the left because it has the best volume to weight ratio and I find taller containers easier to pack.

I swapped out the black cover for the green one saving another 0.7 oz.

Nice!
The irregular shape did cause some hassle but as I mainly ate noodles, I just crushed a couple of packets to fit.
I will still be using it on some hikes here as it does stop the little critters.
I am seriously considering the bear canister though as the John Muir Trail is further down my bucket list anyway.
I would put it in the bounce box at first opportunity, but I have looked at the first 3 days and considered all my possible options.
Woods Hole Shelter fits most of my preferred ones.
I figure I only need the smallest canister because we will be on last day before resupply so won't have much left.

That' so cool!! (maybe not literally) I like the grass trees. (Don't worry about being PC..;) You'll be in the woods a lot- the trees don't care. :D
It must be a challenge to try and choose clothing that is for very cool weather-Wow! It's going to be so different for you and Daniel but that will add to the adventure.
I'll be in touch with you guys as to where you are & how we can meet up. Unfortunately, I won't be around for TD's. I will be back on May 28th. I'll give you the details, later. I have a feeling when we think it's "hot" outside, you guys might think it's not that bad, at all. :>)

No need for bear canister. I am afraid that readily available human food on AT may lead to a bear canister rule though. I use the setup I have to protect the food from the pack, not the critters. Plus, given my OCD, I want my pack packed the same exact way regardless of amount of food in pack. These canisters take up the same volumes full or empty and weigh about 6 oz.

The last 5 or so miles into Neels Gap REQUIRE a canister if overnighting.
I'm afraid I can predict this is the thin edge of the wedge on the AT.
Why?
Because the bean counters will see a reduction in bear "incidents" in this 5 miles (because no one camps there) and extend the range.

Completely agree. This is how rule makers think. They see a desert with no water pollution and say lets solve the water pollution problems by removing the water. This mentality is coming to the AT and can be avoided. This should be a wake up call to all hikers that we need to put the debating of "my idea is better" behind us. Every effective method should be described and promoted. There is more than one good plan. A zero tolerance of bears getting your food attitude should be the goal. We ignore this reality at our own comfort. I don't want to be forced to carry a bear canister.

GB, I believe you are right about that, at least from my experience.

There are numerous home-made protection devices such as cookie tins. Some of these methods work better than others. For many years, the only two commercial products available were the Ursack (http://www.Ursack.com) and the Ratsack (http://www.armoredoutdoorgear.com) cache bag.
The Ursack is a bag made from from a high tech material called Vectran, the same stuff used in the Mars Rover landing air bags. It is virtually impervious to biting and gnawing animals. It uses a metal drawstring to close the bag, comes in one size only, 8" x 13" or 650 cubic inches, weights about 5.9 ounces, and costs $59.95.
The Ratsack is a stainless steel mesh bag that comes in three sizes:

small (1200 cubic inches) weighing about 6 ounces for $29.99;

medium (1800 cubic inches) weighing about 8 ounces for $34.99;

large (2500 cubic inches) weighing about 10.5 ounces for $39.99.

Custom sizing is available. All sizes use a wide Velcro closure system.

The Ratsack is a stainless steel mesh bag that comes in three sizes:

small (1200 cubic inches) weighing about 6 ounces for $29.99;
medium (1800 cubic inches) weighing about 8 ounces for $34.99;
large (2500 cubic inches) weighing about 10.5 ounces for $39.99.
Custom sizing is available. All sizes use a wide Velcro closure system.

My system is free (after eating contents), does not change size as items are consumed, and weighs about 6 oz as well.
I am not only a gram weenie, I am a penny weenie.

Grandma Farr fried up the best squirrel ever. Served'em with gravy, soupy taters, and corn pone. Put Colonel Sanders to absolute shame. On a wood cookstove to boot. Lived in Joy, NC beside Upper Creek, near The Brown Mountain of the Brown Mountain Lights.

Gonna be a PoHo and reply to my own post. Grandma Farr was not my Grandma, but Darryl's. His nickname was "Flagrant Bast##d", and no, he did'nt have two brothers also named Darryl. She lived there her whole life and was the best cook I ever encountered.

Hadn't heard that rendition. Cool. Scotty Wiseman wrote it. I first heard it done by Mac Wiseman. Wiseman's view, on the west rim of the Linville Gorge is one of the places early sightings were reported from. Interesting phenomena.
Great fried squirrel! Pretty sure the butter and the milk in the gravy came from the family milk cow. Probably why the gravy and soupy taters and corn pone were so memorable.

Flagrant Bast##d was known all over the county by that name. He was camping with me on Old Rag the morning we woke up to find a bear, sitting on his big fat butt, eating our bread out of the bag a few slices at a time. He later joined the Navy and shed the nickname.

Wow! Had not heard about the prescribed burning proposed for Dobson's Knob. While technically outside the gorge it is adjacent to it. My first 50 miler was from Table Rock Mtn.,( East rim Linville Gorge) to the summit of Mount Mitchell, (Black Mtn Range and highest point East of the Mississippi), which involved hiking over and bushwhacking off the west side of Dobson's Knob. My first orienteering too. High school outing club trip in 1972. Would hate to see this burn carried out and will get my name added to the petition. Thanks for the heads up.

going to tie in tomorrow - first lead of the 3-day will be a pretty easy 5.8- (4 pitch route) on Looking Glass Rock. We'll probably climb something in the 5.10 range on Sunday and then plan to do the biggest route in NC on Monday, Fathom on Laurel Knob which is 10 pitches - its mostly 5.7 and 5.8 climbing with one pitch of pretty well protected 5.10.
Yes, I enjoy being in the woods a lot whether I'm hiking, trail running, climbing, car-camping, creek swimming or just poking around.

sky diving is certainly a consideration but throwing by rack, rope and climbing pack along with a crate or two of car camping stuff in the back of the Subaru is pretty easy - drink some coffee, roll into the parking space, hump it to the climb, rap-off the top, head for the car camp site cook some mac and cheese, drink a beer, repeat - pretty easy and makes for a fun healthy weekend - - no airplanes required
