I tried to that to my collage dorm room in the 70's but we were working with primative black light paint - and come to think about it, weren't very good artists...

One of the former residents of my sophomore year dorm room had done the ceiling in various star formations. It had a coat of paint over it and wasn't easily recognizable in the daylight, but still glowed just bright enough to confuse the heck out of me when I was drunk and half asleep.

On my thru I helped a guy trying to trim down weight. He had a brand new silva w/leather case. When I suggested sending the case home & just keep the compass he fesses up he didn't know how to use it. I asked why he had it then. He said it was on the ten essential list. I asked if he had done much backpacking. In his defense he said no, "But I read a lot of Garvey!"

Nope. It is just that everyone thinks their way is the only way. I love to read the stuff about trekking poles. People who have hiked way more than I will ever hike are all over the place with this one. Some say it is a complete waste of time and weight. Others think it is the best thing since sliced bread.

I will be honest. The only time I have ever hiked with a compass or map was on an 8th grade field trip. I grew up practically living in the woods. If you can see your shadow and have a watch you can tell direction. Having said all that, I will be carrying a compass on my trek across Maine.

Mountain Mike

How many people know how to tell direction by an analog watch? For the most part it's just being aware to follow a topo. I used my cheap ass little compass around my neck more than a good one just to point map in a somewhat accurate direction. From there I could look at contours & figure the rest out. Not so much on AT but PCT where trail was burried in snow for most of the day.

Sorry for the preaching but old school boy scout. You should be prepared BEFORE you head into the woods. Know how to read a map & compass, how to start a fire even if it has been raining for a week, & basic first aid without having to look it up on your Iphone.

You are not preaching. This is common sense. I agree. I know how to use a compass and a map. I have sailed in fog for 30 miles at a time when you could not see 30' feet in front of the boat. I have spent a lot of time in the woods where there is no trails and am very confident in my ability to find my way. Hiking 100's of miles through areas you have never been in is a different matter. This is new to me. I will be carrying a compass and the AT maps. I doubt I will use them, but better safe than sorry.

On my sobo sierra trip I always carried cheap compass, swiss tinker knife & p-38 as a necklace. One time I rally needed it was the one time I took it off during the night because it was choking me. In a white out, snowing like hell on Mt Whitney. Bad enough it even erased my tracks from the way up on summit area. Good gut instint got me down.

Perhaps my mistake is assuming that folks have the common sense to carry a map when headed into the woods. The vast majority of open places aren't blazed in white. I guess I was just lucky enough to have been brought up bushwacking.

I have to wonder what happens to the "the trail is well marked and you only need the guidebook" crowd if an when they try to hike anywhere besides the A.T.

I spent a ton of time hunting, trapping, and fishing starting when I was only 10. I can only recall one time feeling unsure of my direction. I was in a swamp that seemed to go on forever. It was foggy. Several brooks weaved in and out of it. I did not like the feeling at all. I was holding a straight course and came out pretty close to my destination, but would have felt better with a compass. Again, I agree, heading into unfamiliar terrain for hundreds of miles with no backup plan for direction is silly.

That is me. I have spent most of my time walking where there was no trail. Acadia is the exception to that. I spent most of my time hunting, fishing, and trapping. You have better results with all three if you go where others don't and that means getting off the trail.

One of the bad days I had on AT was just after rt 19 in N TN. I kept thinking the 50 meter elevation lines on the map & 100' on the profile would be misleading some day. That was the day. Overcast so no basic direction sense. Up & over a small hill, cross a brook then repeat all day! I was never so happy to hit a long hard climb because that did show up on the map & meant the end of the day. Total climb for the day was like 6000' but looked real gentle on the map.

One of the few real regrets in my life was missing out on going to Philmont. The first time my troop went I was too young, the second time I was too busy. I still remember the awesome folklore/ghost stores that the kids that went brought back and told around the campfire.

Phimont made so many memories. From putting a 8ish lb rock into our crew leader pack (we were heading into a resupply so he had a light pack anyway). Then when he found it & was ready to kill who ever fessed up to it four of us did one at a time. Had him mad as hell stomping in circles. Or coming down Baldy with it's 15' snowbank & snowfield below it. One of the younger kids asked how we were going to get down. I said like this & jumped off & glissaded down. So fun I climbed back up a few times to do it again.

I'm a little confused, seems like I'm getting crap for recommending that hikers should carry a compass, am I missing something?

I have always carried one, but never really needed it on the AT. I have on other trials though.

Astro
03-09-2013, 14:40
Nope. It is just that everyone thinks their way is the only way. I love to read the stuff about trekking poles. People who have hiked way more than I will ever hike are all over the place with this one. Some say it is a complete waste of time and weight. Others think it is the best thing since sliced bread.

Yes, and they are right on what works for them. When it provides value is when they explain why, and then you can compare and decide what you want to try. HYOH.

Astro
03-09-2013, 14:42
On my thru I helped a guy trying to trim down weight. He had a brand new silva w/leather case. When I suggested sending the case home & just keep the compass he fesses up he didn't know how to use it. I asked why he had it then. He said it was on the ten essential list. I asked if he had done much backpacking. In his defense he said no, "But I read a lot of Garvey!"

MM, great story, the best is that he honest with himself. There is always hope in a case like that.

Astro
03-09-2013, 14:47
Sorry for the preaching but old school boy scout. You should be prepared BEFORE you head into the woods. Know how to read a map & compass, how to start a fire even if it has been raining for a week, & basic first aid without having to look it up on your Iphone.

MM, with 3 Boy Scouts sons and years as a leader I read/heard several times about mole skin being in your first aid kit. Was not until I was on the AT the I ever had the need for it, and boy was I grateful at that time for "Be Prepared". :)

Astro
03-09-2013, 14:55
Perhaps my mistake is assuming that folks have the common sense to carry a map when headed into the woods. The vast majority of open places aren't blazed in white. I guess I was just lucky enough to have been brought up bushwacking.

I have to wonder what happens to the "the trail is well marked and you only need the guidebook" crowd if an when they try to hike anywhere besides the A.T.

The AT is like the interstate, where other trails I have been on are more like county roads and state highways. They require a lot more tools (map, gps, etc..) unless you are really familiar with them.

Astro
03-09-2013, 14:58
Most of the time just walking in the same direction is gonna lead you to "somewhere". It's walking around in circles that will lead you to trouble.

To a point - you are right. HYOH as long as you don't drag others into your problems. If you get lost and haul out the phone and activate a SAR team, or something like that, HYOH no longer applies, IMHO.

Doping In Ice Fishing? The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency Says It Could Happen

By Joe Cermele
I learned some interesting things about doping this morning per this article (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/24/sports/ice-fishermen-not-immune-to-dopings-reach.html?_r=1&) in The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/24/sports/ice-fishermen-not-immune-to-dopings-reach.html?_r=1&). You, like me, might have assumed that only athletes who engage in strength-based or agility-based or stamina-based sports would dope. Not true. In 2011, two pro mini golfers and one chess player tested positive for banned substances, according to the World Doping Agency. I guess if put-put players and board gamers think there's an advantage to juicing, why not ice fishermen? That's why the U.S. doping agency tested members of the Russian Ice Fishing Team following their win at the World Ice Fishing Championship in Wisconsin.
http://www.fieldandstream.com/files/imagecache/photo-single/photo/18/syringe.jpg
As I understand it, this is all part of a bid to get ice fishing included in the Olympics, which may actually happen down the line, though it's a long shot. Still, the thinking is that if you want to be treated like an Olympic athlete, you'll have to be subjected to the same testing as skiers and hockey players. Given that we're talking ice fishing, however, the testing was kind of taken with a grain of salt. After all, what are you going to do better doped up? Drill 300 more holes? Work a jig faster?
“We do not test for beer, because then everybody would fail,” said Joel McDearmon, chairman of the United States Freshwater Fishing Federation...
Bill Whiteside, a previous gold medal winner from Eau Claire, Wis., said that physical strength often had little to do with fishing success.
“It’s not the best athlete that usually wins the events,” he said. “A lot of times it’s the experienced older guys.”
The Doping Agency didn't find anything afoul in the Russian team's urine.

Well, quite the epic hike I had yesterday on Pico - not! I got to the Sherburne Pass parking by Inn at Long Trail. Checked for my snow shoes in the trunk, where I thought I'd put them, with my other gear. Not there. No problem, I think, S.P. trail is well hiked, will be packed down - was on 1/19, and the snow the other day up this far was only a few inches. Don the spikes and let's get going.

I made it 0.1, to the first sign. Post-holed about 1 in 5 steps to start with, then progressively more. More like 4 of 5 steps 100 yards in. Turned around, defeated for a third time by the easy Pico. Annoyed, I decide, time to get in some A.T., one way or another - will do the roadwalks in the Hanover area. Drove Rt 4, where I got a vexatious and expensive speeding ticket in January (I made it to Pico Camp at 3525' or so and turned back due to high winds and low temps that day). Got to the turnoff to West Hartford, had to go check it out. Had a greasy burger at the refurbished West Hartford General Store, and took some pics and talked with the proprietor. He said they'd been washed out Irene, but were back 100% - place looked good, he said he's ready for hiker season. The Irene Burger - no kidding - was good, but I shouldn't have had the fries. I considered hiking all the way into Hanover - he said it was 9 miles or so - and asking for a ride back into W.H., but opted against, since I wanted to spend some time in town.

Had fun walking the roaded A.T. part in Hanover, about a mile and a half, and some neighboring streets. There was a gorgeous picture book entitled "Moosilauke" at the bookstore which I highly recommend. Got to the Vermont side of the bridge and, which snapping pics of it, dropped my iPhone a second time on the day. First time, I'd made a mental note - "I really need to go ahead and get a case for this thing." Second time was most unfortunate - it fell flat on its face on the sidewalk, and the screen shattered.

Well crap! At least I have insurance, right? Call Verizon, they give me the info I need - purchase date, which I knew, and phone serial number - then connect me to Asurion. I guess it's true that there's a wave of serious iPhone fraud, as they give me the third degree, standard operating procedure, between the hold messages menacingly talking about prosecution for fraud, is your phone really broken or lost, etc., and the attendant, who was courteous, saying she needed to send me an affidavit to guard against identity fraud. I pushed back, and she noted that I've been with them 8 years and was a good customer, so she talked to supervisor and was able to waive the aff requirement. Was annoying when I was already majorly bummed out about the broken phone. But it got better - wait, there's more!

So I figured the co-pay would be more than the $50 I paid on my old Palm Treo, then new, in 2006. Little did I know! It was $169! I mentioned this, not in anger, more in a bit of shock, to the CSR, and she said, yes, it's high for high end phones. Of course, $169 is better than $600 or so for a new phone, but man!

Funny thing is, the phone still works, including the touch screen. I made the call from my broken phone. Poor thing's face was broken like some errant mobster's but it's still ticking, to borrow a phrase from Timex.

Anyhow, after the phone break, I opted against the VT portion of my "hike", which would've added 3.4 miles RT. As it was, I logged about 0.2 postholing and about 3.0 side-walking. A day of contrasts, mostly a day wasted and be-vexed, if that's a word. Did hear a very interesting show on VPR about computer coding which I found encouraging, and it was nice to see the "other West Hartford." New phone should get to me Tuesday.

Rats. RS was going to be my next victim. I saw where he was trying to change his name to Socks, but it was already taken. I was going to set up a poll to determine a new name for him. Choices were going to be, Smelly Socks, Darn Socks, Holy Socks, Dirty Socks, Missing Socks, Red Sox, etc.... I should have posted it last night. I failed PoHoing 1.01 again. Never put off a post until tomorrow that can be done today.

i had to take an incomplete in the course. i took the course at the new school, and they didnt have their own computer so i had to go book time at nyu. would spend 4 hrs using a keypunch to type out 2 or 3 thousand lines of data, then wait an hour for it to be put into que for it to run, then have it come back failed 392 syntax errors. commands were very unforgiving , if you typed a comma instead of a period or had more than one space between words, it wa a synax error. well after trying to correct it for another week, i never was able to get the program to run and had to take an incomplete in the course.

FatHead64
03-10-2013, 20:48
My first (HS) programming class was a programmable calculator. It could take up to 8 cards and we had no keypunch. Had to use paper clip and this holder with strips of rubber underneath spaced just so.

Hey, Milkman! We're on our way back from the mountains. We had time to check out the access points in the vicinity of Standing Indian. The road to the Deep Gap parking lot is currently closed as is the road to the Albert Mt. Bypass trail. We met a local who was out for the day and she said most likely the FS would not open the roads till April 1. That leaves you with Rock Gap and Wallace Gap as your closest options. Both of these are accessible year-round.

That would be great. I'm realistically looking at 10 days to cover 70 or 106mi. I would really like to get picked up early morning on the 30th which would actually be day 11. Sort of wanted to be right there wherever just hanging out till you got there. Not a lot of hiking. I would hate to commit to the 106 and something happen to where I can't make it. I've been doing 8 - 14's pretty regular but that is all on flat ground - no pack. Haven't carried my pack any distance since the 23rd. And that was flat ground too. All I'm reading about is how everbody forgot how tough GA was.

She's being nice. Last time I was up on Blood Mt. I was 23yo. My wife and I has just done 66 in 7 in the Big South Fork with the biggest day at 13.5. We ran up from Neels. (LOL) Then jogged to Springer.

He knows he can do it. You just have to get military on him once in a while to keep him motivated!

I'm feeling pretty confident MM. Everything (body wise) is feeling pretty good. I'll be starting with the trail runner from NC. She should keep me moving. The one girl from FL had to bail.

I would avoid Hawk Mt Shelter. I found it hard falling asleep to automatic gunfire & choppers circling overhead.2031120312

On a section hike Me & another hiker were enjoying some vodka a trail angel left there when a sargent approached us explaining he was training some rangers & would appreciate if we wouldn't interfere. Other guy looks at him & say "So like, we're already dead?" This got a chuckle & Sarge said yeah. They patrolled through.
