Aww, ok, then, I 'll drop the dril sergeant routine for now. Maybe I ' ll have some good news for you tomorrow. I guess you could hike out from Deep Creek to the backcountry information kiosk beyond the gate, but I'm not sure how many extra non-AT miles that would put you doing. I 'm thinking maybe 4-5 miles, one way.

Sorry, I meant Deep Gap. I'm still on the road and don't have the book with me.Okay, good. That pretty much gives me an out if I need it. It will depend on what you find out tomorrow from the FS. If it would be open on the Apr 1st and you could take me/us back there then that would be an option. Can you get to the information kiosk with no trouble?

After looking at the map again, the shortest way to depart the AT from Deep Gap seems to be up FS 71.You would leave the AT and just walk north on FS 71 to the intersection with Hwy 64. THere's not a parking area at 64 but there's plenty of room to hang out. we saw a bear crossing Hwy 64 here once. It does look like about 4 or 5 miles but it is a road walk. But then you'd have to do it again to get back to the trail when you return.

if you take the Kimsey Creek Trail from Deep Gap you will eventually get to the Standing Indian campground area with the kiosk. I'm not sure of the distance - it looks about the same as the FS 71 option but I think the road walk would be faster and easier.

Hey, Milkman! We're on our way back from the mountains. We had time to check out the access points in the vicinity of Standing Indian. The road to the Deep Gap parking lot is currently closed as is the road to the Albert Mt. Bypass trail. We met a local who was out for the day and she said most likely the FS would not open the roads till April 1. That leaves you with Rock Gap and Wallace Gap as your closest options. Both of these are accessible year-round.
Got that too!!
Is Dicks Creek Gap still an option?

My take on what BB said is this- he has a really great relationship with his wife. He respects, loves and cherishes her. Good relationships require "work". (not in a bad sense) It's just how we roll. BB is a good man with a good wife, I'ma thinking! ;) They put a lot of effort into the relationship they own..

I'll just send the missionaries over to your house. :)

No worries. Sister Wives and the other Mormon things on TV are fundamentalists. The Church ended plural marriage in 1890. The Mormon men were being martyred at a high rate in the early days of the Church and someone had to take care of all those children.

I don't see how anyone could have more than one wife.

I saw that. I'm using 2008 ATC map. It shows the Kimsey parallels 71 north for maybe 3/4mi. before they split apart and the trail goes to the campground and the road to the highway. You're right, they're both probably the same distance and if the trail is shorter it's not by much. The road walk is probably faster time wise and easier. I'll wait and see what you find out from the FS and throw around a few ideas. We both know there's no casting in stone. I'll take what I'm given.

As Sandy says I'm on trailjournals. http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?trailname=11730 But still trying to figure out things on there. For one thing I can't figure out how to get my latest entry to the front, and just stuff like that. But I'll do the best I can. And SS is going to be updating it for me too and coming on here in the cafe to update everybody. I'll get online when I can and it's convenient.
Sandy, are you gonna be on the trail soon? i know you said something about meeting up at Trail Days but I was wondering if you were gonna be on the trail and when.

Some say absence make the heart grow fonder,
others say absence makes the heart go wonder.

For ATM & SS we sure it is the former.

That would be great. I'm realistically looking at 10 days to cover 70 or 106mi. I would really like to get picked up early morning on the 30th which would actually be day 11. Sort of wanted to be right there wherever just hanging out till you got there. Not a lot of hiking. I would hate to commit to the 106 and something happen to where I can't make it. I've been doing 8 - 14's pretty regular but that is all on flat ground - no pack. Haven't carried my pack any distance since the 23rd. And that was flat ground too. All I'm reading about is how everbody forgot how tough GA was.

ATM, don't worry about it. Just take your time putting one foot in front of the other, enjoying the scenery and idea that you doing an AT thru-hike. :sun

Is it just my perception or are there more interrogative Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot questions lately here on WB? Some of them are just way out there. The latest one is about day trading. Lyle and Feral Bill both had nice replies to that.

All kinds of industrial machinery. When dealing with cement kilns (past job), that was a real possibility. Some of us do work in the boiler house. I am in drug products, so it's more about making safe drugs. We are the brand name for the drugs that gave the fungal meningitis infections. Now the sole supplier since the generic producers all seem to be having issues. We specialize in sterile injectable medications.

From Deep Gap it's a walk uphill to Standing Indian. But after that it's some of the best ridge walking on the AT. A little uphill to Albert (or you can go around on the FS Road) and then it's all downhill to Rock Gap which is right on the road (old 64).

How is everyone? Been sick the last three day with Strep throat. Went to the doctor today and the nurse laughed at me when she took my temp of 104. I don't get sick often but when I do it's a doosey!

Sorry to hear that.
There was an outbreak of bird flu in the cafe recently.

im really leaning towards heading south and hiking for a month or so. i just ordered an atmos50 to replace my atmos65. i was gonna wait until i saw ozjackos ula, but i know i wont go wrong with the atmos. i went to rei made sure i was getting the right size, but they only had orange, so i ordered a gray one from backcountry.com.itll be here wednesday, so ill have it in time if i do decide to hike. i already have all my gear so i dont need to plan much except food for the first 4 days.

I called to the Nantahala Region office today and if the weather stays nice - they may open the roads in the Standing Indian Rec area as early as this weekend. She was all but certain the roads would be open by sock hop weekend!

just to fill you in i walked out of work today.im taking a few days to decide whether i want to stay there or not, so im taking off at least until monday. ill do an overnight with the new pack thurs/friday somewhere, and will meet ozjack&son at jfk with lou on saturday.between now and then ill decide whether im going back to work or going hiking for a month. right now im inclined to do it.even if i leave him for a month or two, if i came back hed probably hire me back. but if i take a month now and go hiking, i probably wouldnt be able to do the maine walk.
so if decide i still want to work there, ill go back monday so i can hike in august.

You have to go with what you want not the rest of us.
My focus for about 2 years is to do the AT.
It would be fantastic to do the first month with you but throughout the life of the cafe your focus has been Monson in August.
Also you have often posted how you love your job/situation.
Get a good sleep on it.
Maybe you can get anothe 2 weeks, not a month, catch a free trip down with me and Daniel. Hike a week, go to the Hop and go back to work and still do Monson.

Cheers
