It's kind of a silly thing.
Not as silly as in Oz.
We have two states and one territory (ourselves, Queensland and the Northern Territory) who don't adopt daylight saving.
Normally we are two hours behind the east coast (Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory), and 1 and 1/2 hours behind South Australia and the Northern Territory.
When daylight saving comes in, we are 3 hours behind NSW, Vic, Tas and ACT, 2 1/2 behind SA, 2 behind Qld, and 1 1/2 behind NT.
Confused?
Qld is 1/2 hour behind SA (to their west) and and an hour behind everything to their south.
At least now the changeover date is uniform. Tasmania used to start and finish on different dates.

im at a bit of a crossroads here.i have some inner conflicts im waiting to resolve.my dealership is getting away from the things that made it successful and taking a direction i dont agree with.sales have declined the past few months while our competitors have been somewhat steady. i believe i can right the boat and get it back on course, but that is not my job. i would ask the boss to promote me to sales manager, but im not sure i want the job. it certainly would mean less hiking opportunities and a more stressful life.but right now ive been handling many of the tasks the manager gets paid to do, i still make most of my money selling cars, so i cant spend enough time coaching the guys to get them back on track.i work my tail off, basically a troubleshooter, filling in whatever gaps i need to fill to ensure we're running effectively.and i do it because i care.
so im a selling manager, and if i left and worked somewhere else, i would be strictly in sales, without all the extra headaches and a less stressful life.
so im not sure what i want to do yet.ill meditate on it the next few days and a solution will present itself.it always does.

In my experience, these things often give those that are "above" a wake up call that things need to be looked at.
I've always been one to tell my boss when I think he/she is a moron.
It hasn't always helped my career even when I'm tactful about how I say it.;)
Still, it always let me be comfortable with myself that I am honest about everything and that's more important to me.

Earlier I said I would not say anything ignorant here. I might be in danger of doing just that, but here goes.

You are stuck between 2 worlds. You need to get out of 1 of them. You say you do not want the headaches of the promotion, but you seem to already have them by doing many of the things that would come with the promotion. You do this because you care and do it without the pay and title that comes with the extra things you are already doing.

I have faced this very dilemma a few times in my career. In my 33 years at BIW I have worked in 7 different trades, all facilities, all shifts, in 3 different states, and for more bosses than I can count. I have been a coveted commodity to every boss because I work my ass off no matter where I go. In almost every area I see things that I feel should be done different. I have learned some things in the last 33 years.

There are really only 2 choices: 1) Move up the food chain and change things. 2) Do your job the best you can and let go of the rest.

Doing your job and what your boss should be delegating is not an option. It brings blame to you without having the positional authority to really deserve that blame. It makes your boss even more lazy and incompetent. It gives you the headaches without the reward or ability to truly make a difference.

I have found peace by being the best subordinate I can. It is such a beautiful thing to lay the responsibility at the feet of where it belongs and just do my job. I can succeed in my job, I know how to do a good job. I try to be an asset to my boss by keeping him informed and doing my job as close to perfection as I can. You can't live the other guy's life. Live your life and let the chips fall where they may. Sell your cars. Kick ass. If it collapses you will shine above all others and have another job because of your body of work. Or you could move up the food chain. I have no interest in those headaches. You might feel different.

Just my humble opinion. If I am way off, please forgive my ignorance. I am just trying to help. Okay, back to the silliness.

I would give everything short of my soul, wife, children, and grandchildren to live his life. We are so screwed on our present course that it isn't funny. Not gonna' say why I feel that, but I firmly believe it.

Okay, back to the silliness.
thanks bb. and yes thats exactly the conundrum im wrestling with, but i believe in "let go let god", and given up the decision.like cat stevens says the answer lies within. as i said a solution will present itself. i was just offered a job as sales mgr for a mazda dealership, but again if i make a move right now, i wont be able to take any extended hikes for a while, and at 55 going on 56. so do i take time off now and go hiking, or do i go back to work and ride it out till august, take my maine walk and then decide after that?or do i force my hand, tell him to make me sales mgr, again sacrificing any possibility of extended trips beyond a week?
ill let the answer develop in its own time, and it surely will.by friday im sure ill have come to a conclusion

I would give everything short of my soul, wife, children, and grandchildren to live his life. We are so screwed on our present course that it isn't funny. Not gonna' say why I feel that, but I firmly believe it.

Okay, who was the lady that suggested using a pouch sewn to the end of a bear bag rope? The idea was that the pouch was a duel use item. It held the rock to be thrown or the para-cord and carabiner when in pack. I ask because I am considering that option as it will likely save me another 2 oz over the planned monkey-fist I was lugging. I would like to know where you got the pouch or how you made it.

You can buy a very small stuff sack from REI that measures about 6 or 8 inches square. Or just go by the local Goodwill and find a small cosmetic bag with a zipper, and a loop on the end to tie the rope to. You can find some pretty patterns for a buck or so if you're not insecure about your birdhood :)

im at a bit of a crossroads here.i have some inner conflicts im waiting to resolve.my dealership is getting away from the things that made it successful and taking a direction i dont agree with.sales have declined the past few months while our competitors have been somewhat steady. i believe i can right the boat and get it back on course, but that is not my job. i would ask the boss to promote me to sales manager, but im not sure i want the job. it certainly would mean less hiking opportunities and a more stressful life.but right now ive been handling many of the tasks the manager gets paid to do, i still make most of my money selling cars, so i cant spend enough time coaching the guys to get them back on track.i work my tail off, basically a troubleshooter, filling in whatever gaps i need to fill to ensure we're running effectively.and i do it because i care.
so im a selling manager, and if i left and worked somewhere else, i would be strictly in sales, without all the extra headaches and a less stressful life.
so im not sure what i want to do yet.ill meditate on it the next few days and a solution will present itself.it always does.HB, I no you have the where with all to make the right chioce for you, so I'll just say, I hear ya, and feel your commitment to the job. Being a blue collar worker my whole life has left me with a few rules of engagement and observations.

1. shot glass rule...I place a shoot glass on a map with my house being at the center....I travel no farther than this to work, and if it's a job I really don't want...I flip it over and use the skinny side down.
2. Your only as good as your last job. This has proved to be more true to me as I've aged.
3. My family likes to eat, so it really doesn't matter what I think I should do.

anyway just a few I try to consider before taking a new job on, I'm sure it'll come to you.

My dad always told me that as long as your car is the right one for where you are it's not a problem. The driver is away from the kerb.
When in Europe, every time we took off the kids (15yo,14yo and 11yo at the time) chanted "mummy to the gutter". Was very helpful.

An old man, Mr. Wallace, was living in a nursing home.
One day he appeared to be very sad and depressed.

Nurse Tracy asked him if there was anything wrong.
'Yes, Nurse Tracy ,' said Mr. Wallace.

'My Private Part died today, and I am very sad.'

Knowing her patients were a little forgetful and sometimes a little crazy, she replied, 'Oh, I'm so sorry,
Mr. Wallace. Please accept my
condolences..'

The following day, Mr. Wallace was walking down the hall with his Private Part hanging out of his pajamas.

He met Nurse Tracy . 'Mr. Wallace,' she said, 'You shouldn't be walking down the hall like that. Please put your Private Part back inside your pajamas.'

'But, Nurse Tracy I can't,' replied Mr. Wallace. 'I told you yesterday that my Private Part died.'

'Yes,' said Nurse Tracy , 'you did tell me that, but why is it hanging out of your pajamas?'

(You've gotta love this.)

'Well,' he replied, 'Today is the viewing.'

After one long hike it's easy to plan. Other than upgrading gear Most of my prepping was dreaming more than planning. Food drops I used for smaller places I just set up a grocery bag with number of days food I needed. Did all my food shopping in about 2 hrs (had to go to two stores & got some strange looks with all the tuna, pastas, crackers & PB) then just did a rotation of meals till bags were done.

ive got my jump box, has all my gear all in one place for a trip, just add bag, pad, tent, im good to go(just remembered have to get my poles out of the trunk of my car, although i may not bring them. my new atmos 50 arrives tomorrow,
