I've always been one to tell my boss when I think he/she is a moron.
It hasn't always helped my career even when I'm tactful about how I say it.;)
Still, it always let me be comfortable with myself that I am honest about everything and that's more important to me.

Okay, who was the lady that suggested using a pouch sewn to the end of a bear bag rope? The idea was that the pouch was a duel use item. It held the rock to be thrown or the para-cord and carabiner when in pack. I ask because I am considering that option as it will likely save me another 2 oz over the planned monkey-fist I was lugging. I would like to know where you got the pouch or how you made it.

That's exactly what happens. They fooled around with the specifics somehow and the rule was wherever the product was "finished" is where it was made. So - don't believe everything you read about being made in the USA. Especially WM.

I got broadsided by a flame on the daylight savings thread yesterday. It seems like te less offensive the post, the more likely you are to get an angry response.

Probably because the less offensive you are makes them think you are a nice person. Just like in real life bullies do not usually go after people they perceive are "tough" and will put up a fight. They look for what they perceive as easy marks. Not saying it should be that way.

It did my head in going the wrong way around roundabouts.

Oz, you will not find many of those in the USA. Driving here since I was 15 (36 years) and been on a lot more of them in Brazil and the UK than here.

ATM, How much did it weigh (without food & water)?
I'm not really sure. I'm at 32lbs with 4 days food and 1.5 liter of water. I also have a can and a half of Nido in there. I gotta have my milk. That's over a pound by itself. But it doesn't last long a 4Tbs per cup. I think I was around 22lbs. before food and water.

ATM, lets see LW has the patriarch type leader aspect down with all of his experience and personality. And the one picture I saw of LW had a resemblance to Phil. But I don't really know about the Happy, happy, happy. Since HB show that CEO type leadership in starting and growing the Cafe I guess he could be our Willie. With your great since of humor you could be Jase. Of course I could also see you taking Phil or Willie if you wanted. :)

LW, Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty. ATM was asking, and proposed comparison was only meant as a compliment as both you posses many of the same positive attributes. Hiya, kids! Well, I made it back to Iraq. Got in yesterday. Stuck in Baghdad until Sunday. This traveling in country thing is getting to be ridiculous with the waits.

I managed to bookend the vacation with a little fun on each side of the class I took. Class was one hell of a week. Started feeling kinda pekid Sunday night. Monday, woke up feeling like hell. By Tuesday it was more like hammered s#*t warmed over twice. Wednesday I was wishing for death. And those were all classroom days. Thursday was practical application. Live burns all day. I woke up feeling slightly better, but better than wishing for death...well you get the idea. I managed to live through the day Thursday but it kicked my everloving ass. Passed the test, got the certification, all worth it.

The Saturday before class started (March 2nd) I saw Gabriel Iglesias at the Toyota Center in Houston. He's a hell of a comedian and it was a great show, but I wouldn't recommend seeing a comedy show in a place like that (arena setting). The acoustics suck. Entirely too much echo. Fortunately, Fluffy has a pretty soft voice and doesn't yell a lot, so there wasn't much echo during his show. A few of the preliminary comics, yeah...ouch. All in all it was a great time though. He's a very humble young man and you can tell he truly appreciates his fans. When he came out on stage he was talking about that being the largest (12,000) crowd he's ever had. Previously it was 10K. His voice broke while he was talking about it. Plus, there were coupons/cards available at every merchandise stand for every fan in the audience to go on line and get a free t-shirt. I know at least two in the audience (my date and I) didn't grab a coupon, but even if only half the crowd did, that's a pile of money he laid out just to get the shirts made, not to mention the lost profit.

Saturday the 9th, I saw Cirque du Soleil: Quidat. I'd never seen a Cirque show before, and now I'll never miss another if I have the chance. My previous assessment of it being circus meets Broadway meets LSD was pretty accurate, and I say that as a compliment. One hell of a show!

Sprinkled throughout were a few really nice meals, although not as many as I'd hoped, what with being sick for part of the trip. At least both weekends I felt decent enough to gorge. :p

I hope all is well with everyone here.

Yea, Anapurna and a couple of the trail circuits in Nepal for 3 months, Florida Trail which he finished on March 3 or 4. Springer I believe March 31 or April 1.

Feel like there's so much to answer today, but I'll start here.
HB I share your dislike of crowds and have had a lot of misgivings about starting in the herd.
I considered really early starts but decided no as I have no experience of snow and thought I should avoid the extra unknown it involved.
I considered a late start but the idea of having to "push" at the end to make Katahdin on time didn't appeal.
Then I thought a bit more about why I was hiking the AT.
It is a unique trail in that it has such a long history and so many newbs attempting it.
I figured that spending the first month or so in the herd was actually what the ying and yang of the AT was all about.
So I picked a start date in the middle and decided to revel in it.
I did opt for a quietish day so my first day or two won't be too embarassing for me, but I intend to sit back and enjoy the lectures, gear critiques and tales of woe etc.
And yes, we have a tent each so that we don't have to crowd in when we feel uncomfortable.:D
After TrailDays is when I expect the hiking will get serious (oops Coach - snerious).

Not sure whether Damascus is an overnight stop on the car trip and The Place is not an option for car travellers, but a quick hello is definitely planned.
HB coming along means we will be guided largely by his preferences but a stop in Damascus to look around is a locked in option.
Reason HB's preferences will be main decision on anything else is that it's all new to us so we will happily look at what piques his interest mostly.

Lone Wolf - I have intended to drop in on the way down and say hello.
Not sure whether Damascus is an overnight stop on the car trip and The Place is not an option for car travellers, but a quick hello is definitely planned.
HB coming along means we will be guided largely by his preferences but a stop in Damascus to look around is a locked in option.
Reason HB's preferences will be main decision on anything else is that it's all new to us so we will happily look at what piques his interest mostly.

i just got back from my sitdown with the boss. i told him i wasnt happy with my current role, and unhappy with the direction we're going.i told him i was going to go hike for a month or two and when i returned we would talk about me working there again.i need to get some separation so that i can look at my life objectively and see how i want to finish out my career, and i told him it didnt necessarily mean i would not return, just that i needed some time and separation to ensure if i did return, i would bea able to give it 100%he said he understood, that in a way he wishes he could simplify his life the way i have, that he envies me. he told me the door will be open, that i will have a job(he didnt know what capacity)should i choose to return. he knows my love of hiking, and wa supportive in the past of all my trips, and my penchant for disappearing for a few days when things got too hot at work.
so i call my mom to tell her my intention to go hiking. she tells me she took dad for his checkup monday with the eye,ear and throat guy, who found a white growth under his tongue the size of a quarter.cut the whole thing out to send for biopsy to find out if its cancerous or not. dad is now 83,survived a stroke, has bladder cancer already(its contained, not spreading),survived an aortic abdominal aneurism 5 years ago and says he does not want to go for treatments if it does turn out to be malignant.hes been through a lot the past 10 years and hes tired.

thats the major difference between the 65 and the 50.mine doesnt have the sleeping bag divider, no bottom zipper=better water resistance.

i got a medium -3lbs 2oz before surgery.
i had a large 65, but the hipbelt was a weebit too much belt for my skinnya** hipless butt. now with the new dialed in suspension, fits my torso perfectly and the belt is smaller, sits much better on my hips.

Do you lobotomize the brain, I could get away with leaving it off at times, and just fold over the top. Getting my hips in shape to take the load has been a little uncomfortable these last few days...ouch.

the zippers held up fine on my other one, ive had it for 5 years. im still going to keep it for winter as i dont think the smaller pack will hold all my winter gear

And I'm still about a pond and few oz lighter than my Kelty pack.
