I fiddled with my 1st homemade alcohol stove some more this morning. I do not get it. It runs good and all. I guess my expectations were too high. Then I looked online for amount of fuel needed per boil for an efficient one. 2oz per boil? That times 16 equals 2lbs. We will be in the woods and average of 8 days at a time on our Maine walk and hope to be able to boil water morning and night. I see no weight savings here even if I had one that worked fantastic. I think I am done with that experiment.

For you... any one you want it to be. For me... humble pie is the one I could benefit from the most. I have bad genes. We think we are all that and a bag of chips. The 3 minute rule helps to hide much of it. What I apply via delay on here, I sometimes struggle to apply in real life. So, I'll pick Pumpkin for you (the healthiest) and humble for me (the neediest).

You missed the Bible study last night. We have very patient members in the Café. We are very tolerant of each other. I will try to not highjack the Café for that purpose too often.

Morning Joke.....

An orienteer was running along one day when he came to the narrowest part of the River Severn in England. Seeing another orienteer on the other bank, he called out, 'Hey, how do I get to the other side?'

The other orienteer, who incidentally came from Wales, looked carefully along the bank to the left, then carefully along the bank to the right, thought a bit, then called back, 'You are on the other side.'

It was a windy day as WOO & BirdBrain walked to the top of Katahdin. There they met a UL lady hiker wearing a sports kilt coming toward them. Her kilt blowing in the wind revealed that she did not pack underwear. WOO says to BirdBrain, "what do we say to her, I am distracted". BirdBrain says, "let's talk about the weather". So as she passes WOO says, "Airy isn't it?" To which the UL hiker says, "What did you expect, feathers?"

60 ml per boil? How the heck much are you boiling? My Penny boils a half-litre of water on 20-25 ml of fuel in warm weather. On three-day trips with my daughter, I've never exhausted a 250 ml fuel bottle, cooking for two, making oatmeal and coffee in the morning and a hot meal at night. (I recently packed about 400 ml for myself for a four-day trip, but that was because I thought I might need to melt snow.)

Are you using a windscreen? Not only does a windscreen block the wind, it reflects the heat back into the stove and channels the hot gas around the pot. Big efficiency boost.

Are you using something to keep the base of the stove off the cold ground? You lose a lot of efficiency otherwise. I use the bottom of a soda can, cut right around where it starts to narrow, but with three tabs sticking up to hold up the stove. It doubles as a primer dish in cold weather. (The Penny is supposed to be self-priming, but it isn't, quite, in subfreezing weather.) If I'm not using it to steam something, the disc from my Fauxbaker goes on the ground under the whole shebang to reflect heat upward. That also makes a big difference in efficiency.

8 days, boiling morning and night, is starting to get close to the range where a Whisperlite makes sense. As you stretch out the trip, naphtha always wins eventually, because it simply has a higher energy content than butane or alcohol.

Most of the stoves I've made boil 2-cups with <1oz of fuel. I normally use a stove made from a section of hair spray can because it's sized such that it almost locks into the bottom of the Foster pot I use, very stable. The easiest stove IMO to make is a cat food can stove, all you need is a hole punch, or drill, to make it and it requires no stand, again will boil water with an oz of fuel.

You'd have had a major hoot watching us trying to get that thing up off the bottom. It was pinned by the current against a large rock, in 5 feet of water. Kept expecting it to buckle. Thankfully it didn't, but we nearly did.

Went out one day with a friend who had a new canoe, long story short, about a miles fom the take out we folded in half, were able to bend it back into shape enough to get to the take out. As we tranferred his canoe from my truck to his and were about to part ways, the time when you tell each other you had a real good time, Bob said "well, it's been real".

HM - saw on other thread you were out hiking with your daughter today. Good hike? I was alone today (which is normal) and the predicted snow didn't come, so virtually all the ice and snow are gone (except for a few shady spots) and I was making much better time today. Of course, that exposed the trash and stuff people leave in the park that has been buried in the snow - so I kicked into my guardian angel (of the park) mode. Sigh.

Well guys, the gear is loaded in the car and I'm ready to head for the Chattanooga airport early in the morning, will spend a week in Tampa with my daughter and grandkids and then on to the AT near Hampton, TN, if all goes well I wont be back on WB until mid May, just want to say thanks to all for the laughs and hope to cross paths with you some day...as you travel through life, whatever be your goal, keep your eye upon the doughnut, and not upon the hole...blessings to all, and to all, a good night.

I am just so envious of the folk starting out. But, well, I have a great gig going at the morning, with a chance to make a real difference for some people's lives. So, no long-distance hiking for me. Gotta have the priorities straight!

Maybe I'll get out and try to make a nice surprise for some of you guys when you make it north. Anywhere between DWG and Manchester Center is manageable as a weekend trip. It'll have to be a "wave as you go by" or "feed you / buy you a drink / give you a present / shuttle you somewhere" sort of thing, because I know better than to try to hike with someone who's got their trail legs. You won't want me slowing you down.

BB, the other day you wanted an example of the difference between experience and wisdom (learning from your mistakes and learning from others mistakes).

TW's canoe trip made me think of another. I had the bright idea many years ago of getting a running start with my wife in the canoe, sorta like a bobsled or luge. Needless to say what works on land does not work so well on water. It was on a lake at her family reunion, and they all enjoyed it (not so much for her).

Wow! That brought back a memory. We used to do something that was more dangerous than that, though we did not understand it at the time. Ever been on a really long toboggan? It is hard to keep your legs in the sled when they are wrapped around the person in front of you. We used to stack as many as we could on one and scream down a hill. It is no wonder we did not lose legs. One winter someone in our town did tear up their leg real bad doing what we were doing.

In Michigan when the Huron River would start to thaw we used to chop huge sheets of ice away from the bank and float on them down the river like a raft. When the river would come to a bend the piece we were floating on would crash into the bank and either slide over or under the existing sheet of ice there and we would just run across it to the bank and laugh like hell.

ATM, just goes to show that you can take a "Florida Hillbilly" to Michigan, and they will still find a way to have fun! :)

Don't feel bad mom. I would say a few people have a hard time keeping up in the cafe. Sooooo many pages every day. Just wanted to make sure you knew how much you mean to the us. :)

No prob, DH. :) Is there anything you can do to get that tooth fixed in a hurry? I don't like tooth pain.. I had to have a root canal... thought I would die before I could get to the dentist.

Tooth pain is the worst for me. I have broken several bones, torn ligaments and such but a hurting tooth just stops me in my tracks. I'm going to see an oral surgeon soon. Not looking forward to it but................
