Ah Astro, you are just young enough to have the Flying Nun and not Gidgit jar your memory:p

Coach, I do remember the family watching Gidgit, but you are right I was too little to care much. We even had a dog we named after her. Do remember actually watching the Flying Nun. Burt Reynolds movies were what I remember the best, Smokey and the Bandit and The End. In Lincoln, she looked even older than her time on ER, I guess because she is. Also Mary Todd Lincoln was a pretty sad character.

TW, the movie is good, especially if you are interested in the 13th Amendment or how cunning Lincoln was (based on part of the book Team of Rivals, which BTW is a a great book, but around 900 pages). It is just you know how in Glory and Private Ryan they try to graphically show you how gross war can be. Well in this movie I believe the make up artist took it upon themselves to make the people look as authentic as possible, which in this case was not always flattering. There were good looking young people in the movie too, their characters just did not stand out as much for me.

Did you know there's a really nice waterfall just about a mile up the highway from Neels Gap? You head back east on the highway, back toward Blairsville, and there's a right-hand turn that goes off into a small subdivision, down a dirt road, and to a pretty good sized parking lot. The trail down to the falls is very short and has steps and a viewing platform at the end.

Take them to Helen if the weather's too nasty to be out much.

I have to put one more wondering to bed before I am wandering to bed:
I have noticed more than one person complain about unwanted PM's (I Google a lot of things about Whiteblaze).
A few have gone so far as to publicly complain about private messages. (I am not judging the complainers as I have no clue to the content of the PM)
But I wonder, Do people know that they can limit access to those things to contacts and moderators?
Seems like an easier solution to me. Now it is time to wander.

That is too bad. Hope he is lurking. Let me say this: If every friend I have were to get upset and leave when I say something offensive I would have no friends. The inflection in typed words is so hard to read. I have often wanted to post a reply to a friend that would be the proverbial punch in the shoulder, only to delete it because of how it could be taken. I believe a person should be judged by the sum of his deeds, not the sum of his words. I am glad I took the time to listen to what others have said about LW. I think I would be very happy to meet him/you.

I am always leery of Hollywood's spin on factual events. They do a great job with fantasy. I find contemporaneous writing a better source of judging historical events. Especially writing that predates the event. Everyone has a bias and an opinion of an event once it occurs. We do this after many sporting events. It is more telling when a person says something and does something years prior to the judged event. Said events are better judged through the prism prior to the event than it is after the event.

I love the product produced by Hollywood that deals with fiction. I almost never watch the movies that deal with "fact". By definition, my opinion of said movies is ignorant. So take that as it is. IMIO.

PS. I believe there is only one person that lived in that time period worthy of full respect by all people. I wish it were possible to hear the mind of Robert E Lee fully. I believe he could restore balance and heal many hearts. However, given the greatness of that man, it is unlikely he would ever be candid enough to offer a full perspective. I believe his allegiance to principle would would prohibit a bluntness that would give a clear picture. I believe he would say as he did to the woman who was saving the oak tree peppered by union artillery, It is time to cut it down and let it go.

There's a Waynesboro in TN, GA, and as all trail types know, VA. If they were in any of them they either did a flip flop, or were just plain lost. I expect they were in Waynesville, NC.

City Killer... coming... 2029...

On April 13, 2029, asteroid 2004 MN4 will fly past Earth only 18,600 miles (30,000 km) above the ground. For comparison, geosynchronous satellites orbit at 22,300 miles (36,000 km). "At closest approach, the asteroid will shine like a 3rd magnitude star, visible to the unaided eye from Africa, Europe and Asia--even through city lights," says Jon Giorgini of JPL. This is rare. "Close approaches by objects as large as 2004 MN4 are currently thought to occur at 1000-year intervals, on average."

Thanks TW. Coach especially. He and I found out we've got some old hangouts in common, but apparently our brains work quite differently. I struggle to speak without getting all silly with it. The stuff that pops into my brain throughout a normal day can be quite distracting. HB's cafe gives me a great place to express some of it in a very fun way, with a bunch of very interesting and funny people.

99942 Apophis (pron.: / (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English)ə (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)ˈ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)p (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)ɒ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)f (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)ɪ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)/ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English), previously known by its provisional designation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provisional_designation_in_astronomy) 2004 MN4) is a near-Earth asteroid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near-Earth_asteroid) that caused a brief period of concern in December 2004 because initial observations indicated a probability of up to 2.7% that it would strike the Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth) in 2029. Additional observations provided improved predictions that eliminated the possibility of an impact on Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impact_event) or the Moon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon) in 2029. However, a possibility remained that during the 2029 close encounter with Earth, Apophis would pass through a gravitational keyhole (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_keyhole), a small region no more than about 800 m (half a mile) wide,[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-keyhole-7) that would set up a future impact on April 13, 2036. This possibility kept the asteroid at Level 1 on the Torino impact hazard scale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torino_Scale) until August 2006, when the probability that Apophis would pass through the keyhole was determined to be very small. Apophis broke the record for the highest level on the Torino Scale, being, for only a short time, a level 4, before it was lowered.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-nasanews146-8)
The diameter of Apophis is approximately 325 metres (1,066 ft).[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-esanews1-2) As of the December 29, 2012 observation arc, the probability of an April 13, 2036 impact is considered to be 1 in 140,000,000.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-riskneo-3) Preliminary observations by Goldstone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldstone_Deep_Space_Communications_Complex) radar in January 2013 have effectively ruled out the possibility of an Earth impact by Apophis in 2036.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-NASA2013-017-9) Of objects not recently observed, there are about ten asteroids with a more notable Palermo Technical Impact Hazard Scale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palermo_Technical_Impact_Hazard_Scale) than Apophis.[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-risk-table-10) On average, an asteroid the size of Apophis (325 meters) can be expected to impact Earth about every 80,000 years or so.[11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-Earth-impact-11)
