99942 Apophis (pron.: / (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English)ə (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)ˈ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)p (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)ɒ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)f (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)ɪ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English#Key)/ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA_for_English), previously known by its provisional designation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provisional_designation_in_astronomy) 2004 MN4) is a near-Earth asteroid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near-Earth_asteroid) that caused a brief period of concern in December 2004 because initial observations indicated a probability of up to 2.7% that it would strike the Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth) in 2029. Additional observations provided improved predictions that eliminated the possibility of an impact on Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impact_event) or the Moon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon) in 2029. However, a possibility remained that during the 2029 close encounter with Earth, Apophis would pass through a gravitational keyhole (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_keyhole), a small region no more than about 800 m (half a mile) wide,[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-keyhole-7) that would set up a future impact on April 13, 2036. This possibility kept the asteroid at Level 1 on the Torino impact hazard scale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torino_Scale) until August 2006, when the probability that Apophis would pass through the keyhole was determined to be very small. Apophis broke the record for the highest level on the Torino Scale, being, for only a short time, a level 4, before it was lowered.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-nasanews146-8)
The diameter of Apophis is approximately 325 metres (1,066 ft).[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-esanews1-2) As of the December 29, 2012 observation arc, the probability of an April 13, 2036 impact is considered to be 1 in 140,000,000.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-riskneo-3) Preliminary observations by Goldstone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldstone_Deep_Space_Communications_Complex) radar in January 2013 have effectively ruled out the possibility of an Earth impact by Apophis in 2036.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-NASA2013-017-9) Of objects not recently observed, there are about ten asteroids with a more notable Palermo Technical Impact Hazard Scale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palermo_Technical_Impact_Hazard_Scale) than Apophis.[10] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-risk-table-10) On average, an asteroid the size of Apophis (325 meters) can be expected to impact Earth about every 80,000 years or so.[11] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis#cite_note-Earth-impact-11)Woo, this has caused me to redefine my interpretation of horse shoes and hand grenades....thanks for posting it

There was also a man from Verdun.

Both those towns, Clayton and Dahlongea, are not too far from Dillard. And course the movie may have had scenes from multiple little towns.

Most was filmed on the Chattooga River that divides GA an SC, just outside of Clayton. The cliff footage was shot in Tallulah gorge, just south of Clayton, but not on the Chattooga. This is the same gorge that Carl Wallenda walked across in the 70's.
Many locals were used in the film, including the 'albino' banjo player. He wasn't really albino or 'in-bred', just looked that way. Makeup did most of it.
Oh, and he didn't really play the banjo either! The magic of film!

James Dickey (the author of the book) played the sheriff in the movie. His nephew is in our hiking group. We hiked the Chattooga River Trail several years ago. Have also rafted the Chattooga (with a guide). Interesting......pointed out all of the scenes from the movie.

just tid-bits from the "store house of knowledge"

That could become a problem. So lay off the bland food I say!

Here is my cold breakfast option:

2 packages of Carnation Instant Breakfast
8 scoops of Nido (scoop supplies with Nido)
3.4 oz package of instant butterscotch pudding
2 scoops of instant coffee (coffee scoop)
pour in water to 24oz mark on bottle
put on cover and shake like crazy
After powder and water is fully mixed you end p with a 16 oz drink with about 860 calories in it.

Not sure that it qualifies as bland.

I need a cup of coffee and a shot of something strong. I got a string of bad luck and had to postpone my thru hike to next year. I had the brakes fail in my truck while coming up to a busy intersection and lived to tell about it, then the next week I had a hit and run on my other vehicle, now nursing an arm injury and kicking myself for having bad luck. I have though have a silver lining peaking through as a national charity wants to possibly use my hike for a fundraising event coupled with some corporate sponsors....it was thrown to me just a few short weeks before i was to go and they needed time to get a plans/events/print/media/etc together so it looks like 2014b for me. Now where is that shot!

HB did an awesome job of driving us down here quicker than we would have done and just beating some nasty weather by doing so.
We are at lodge because Hiker Hostel booking is for tomorrow.
Still have to return car "rental" in north part of Atlanta and then back to Hostel by shuttle this afternoon.
Will register for thruhike on way out this morning.
Probably will leave packs at HH on way to Atlanta.
We still have to finish packing bounce box and mail that too (Hot Springs I think).
PC is a little laptop (Acer) and I have considered carrying it (3.2lbs), but the plan is to bounce that about weekly to help posting pics and longer journal entries.

not ideal, but not bad for the start.

saw some great barn owls on my walks about town early this morning - two mating owls that live in a big tree near UGA - crows were relentless in chasing them about 6:15 am - - WOO would know what types of owls they were o I think they are barn owls or bard owls but not sure - big round white faces - fast and strong looking

I think I saw an eagle flying this afternoon!! not sure, though :(

I had a new smaller one........it is stowed in the non-essential camping gear shelves. I must say that I've used the heck out of my past purchases from REI. It was in New Rochelle then and me and a co-worker who hiked, would fly down 95 on the nite they were open late.
