My wife hates the way I play. She is aggressive. I play for the end game. I make sure my opening is solid, swap where I can, and work on pawn structure. For me it is all about pawn structure (beyond the obvious battle for the 4 center squares). If a mistake is made, I will take the opportunity, but that is not the goal. I assume, my opponent will not make a mistake. While others are trying to attack my king, I am trying to gain a pawn or double an opponents pawn. Later, I will win with a promoted pawn.

Figures a bird would be focused on the pawns instead of the power in the back row.

It did. My eyesight went crazy last weekend. I could not drive, it was so bad. I made an appointment with regular doctor. After hearing symptoms he rushed me in to see an optometrist. Long story, but I am fine. Good news is I may be able to have binocular vision for 1st time in life. I am legally blind in left eye. Things have changed over the years. After 2 hours of testing, they feel they can provide glasses that will bring my bad eye up to 20/25 vision. It was weird. I had depth perception for 1st time in life. Will fill prescription soon.

Love great news that could have been bad. Good on ya!

High levels of uric acid in the blood stream. This causes a build up of crystals in certain joints. Kinda like ground up glass. Why my body doesn't process uric acid as well as others science doesn't know. I have been avoiding or cutting back on foods that are high in purines that have been to produce high levels of acid. I haven't had an attack like this in over a year. Even this is relatively mild. I can still limp around on it without much pain.

"Carrying a mascot is a defensive coping mechanism that has deep seated roots in some childhood trauma that has not been resolved and integrated into the subconscious ego, i.e. that which is more commonly known as the id(iot) poho. Most often traced back to the victim being forced by his mother to eat rutabegas, turnips, cabbage, and other nefarious and noxious vegetables "

I have discovered a new favorite place. Whenever I go to East Lansing to get/drop my daughter at MSU, got to hit the Grand Traverse Pie Company - they are absolutely fantastic!!! I am partial to the Blackberry Peach Pie. Mmmmmmm......

I will be serious for a moment. My mother makes the best pie on the planet. I know... I know... everyone thinks this about their mother. Trust me, I am not just being nice. The secret is in the crust. It is not a preference thing. She makes the best crust I have ever seen and it ain't even close. If you tried it, you would agree. I do not say this about everything she cooks. She is a good cook, but her pies are out of this world.

25F isn't all that cold. 33F, paradoxically, is. Because the air is usually pretty dry at 25 but may be saturated with humidity at 33. Just above freezing, windy and rainy is hypothermia weather.

You are gonna lose some people with that one. Some are gonna have their brains scrambled by math that is not relevant to your point. I live in Maine and know exactly what you are talking about.

The rooks and queen are foundational and fairly stagnant threats in my game. I control the center with pawns, bishops, and knights. I love playing aggressive players that use their "power" too early. I gladly relieve them of said power with lesser pieces. I will trade a 3 for a 5 all day.

Thanks DH. We kept pretty busy with gathering, sawing, chopping, and burning the dead and down wood in the general vicinity. Got in a couple of good hikes and the oldest tried some fishing in spite of the conditions. No luck there, but a very memorable trip for all. Saw lots of deer, 2 tom turkeys, and on the way out we saw a bobcat stroll across the entire width of the road. Sadly my camera was not at hand and I was pretty pre-occupied driving out 22 miles on the closed Skyline Drive.

It really was MM. Sorry to hear the gout is troubling you again. I've been fortunate and only had one episode, last spring, with the right big toe. Kept me up all night. Got on line and did all the home remedies, baking soda and vinegar, turmeric, black bean juice, etc. Finally went away about 5 a m. My chronic problem is digestive tract inflammation and I've found cutting out wheat and other simple carbs helps that tremendously. YMMV but might be worth a try. Hey everybody - more than likely officially off the trail. Left knee is in pretty bad shape and right knee ain't much better. Gonna schedule 2 total knee replacements in Oct. Still going to the sock hop along with SS. Will be helping shuttle the others from the trail. Depressed as hell, but getting over it somewhat. Talked to TW last night and she was very comforting and SS is here now, so as HB says it's all good. Was still hard watching everbody leave this morning but at the same time I was really happy for them. Can't wait till tomorrow to see them again.

Thanks MM, thanks everbody. After the big day up and over Blood Mt. I started doping heavy and by that I mean eatin' Ibuprophen like candy and that's no good so I just bit the bullet and admitted the knee was gone. No sense in doing more damage.

I can relate MM. I am going through a gout attack. My knee is swollen up pretty bad & I am pretty much resigned to postponing my trip(again) & possibly having to cancel it. It all depends on time frame of what happens with attached building next door to us. An friend of my boss bought it at bank auction & plans to demolish it this year & rebuild next. Due to my construction/maintenance background I really need to be here for the demo in case of problems. We are waiting to hear the date. I figure two weeks delay to get leg back to what it need to be. When we get an answer I will know what my options are.

ATM - so sorry to hear about you knees. I can say that knee replacements are not what they used to be. My dad (82) just had it done last summer. Prior to that, he had a walking streak of something like 6000 days without a miss (about 2-3 miles a day I believe) and he had to break the streak for a knee job. Now his was a partial (only one side, one knee), but he could walk a bit on it when he got out of the hospital and they let him begin a new streak within something like 3 weeks of the surgery. It's more like re-facing a bearing than total replacement, these days. So you should be able to rock along soon enough after the surgery just like my dad. You have my prayers, too.

ATM, so sorry to hear this. But glad to hear you are smart to get off now and do the surgery to repair things (instead of making it worse). Medicine is so much better now days, that they can get you fixed up and you can go for it again next year. And at least now you have a taste of how much fun the AT is, which can serve as a great motivator during rehab.

Hang in there, cherish the memories, and keeping looking forward to the next hike. :)

Yeah, no sense in masking the pain. I was having fun, even the hard parts, the cold parts, especially the hostel parts and meeting all the other hikers. We had some really good laughs. Still more to come. I did all of Georgia when I was 23 and for the most part I was alone. I enjoyed it but this time I got just over 50 miles and this time it was much more rewarding.

Hi Everyone - I've been working out at nights a bit and working hard during the day and haven't had too much sit around and chat time but thought I'd stop by and say hi real quick. The weather in GA and the N GA/ NC mountains has been wonderful lately - cold, sunny, water in the creeks, beautiful nights (I've camped out a few nights over the past couple of weeks). One night near Lake Lure, NC about 10 days ago was like being in a planetarium the sky was so vivid. There are folks around here complaining about it being too cold and wet but I know that the heat and dry will come again. For me and my backyard campfire leanings, this is primo weather.

ATM, I know what you mean. I enjoyed it a little bit more when hiking with bubble instead of sometimes in the summer when I might not see anyone all day. Hopefully I can knock over 500 more miles out this summer and get to SNP, so my next 3 summers I can be hiking with NOBOs again.
