Howdy everyone! Mother T, Wilson and I are at the Microtel in Franklin NC. Jacko and Invisible Man and Hikerboy still pounding out the miles. I talked to Jacko this afternoon they are planning to keep going until they get to Winding Stair Gap and get a ride in later tonight. I guess IM ate all the food so no option but to come in tonight. If they do that it will be close to a 20 mile day!

Wow, Howdy AA... thanks for the update. I've been to Winding Stair Gap. I shuttled my daughter and her group in 2010. It's so pretty there! Glad you guys are safe & sound in Franklin. Hope the rest of the Silly Walkers arrive soon! :)

Knees are still very tender. The left more than the right this time. Really feel it when standing up from sitting and on stairs. There's definitely something going on there. I'm gonna get them taken care of. Have heard nothing but positive remarks about surgery. I'll be good to go soon enough.

Re the weather, there were some hikers came in this morning who spent last night just up the trail. Their tents had rain on them that had frozen into ice sheets that "locked" them to the ground. Several left their tents behind and were going back to get them after they thawed out as trying to take them down was tearing them. Below freezing expected here in Franklin tonight with who knows how much lower at altitude.

We're OK. I have a bit of a flu but feel fine.
We have rejoined with Wilson, Army Ant and Mother Teresa and are all planning on making NOC by Saturday night.
Concerned there may be no accommodation available as they have some sort of event there Friday and Saturday as well.
Will try and book somewhere for the 5 of us tomorrow morning.

I remember Albert Mtn as the one where you throw you poles up ahead of you as you climb up the rocks.
You have Jacob's Ladder to look forward to in a few days, and going down the jump off into NOC with snow and ice (hopefully melted and not wet for you) will also be interesting.

I don't think I've ever thrown my poles anywhere. Is that a Real Hiker trick that I've never learnt as a clueless weekender?

I used zip ties to attach snap hooks just below the handles of my poles, and I threaded D rings on the load lifters on my pack. I collapse my poles, stick them in gear loops on the pack, and snap them on the D rings. Ten seconds, they're out of the way and I have my hands free for scrambling. I think the hooks and loops might add as much as 15 grams to my pack weight. Maybe why that's why Real Hikers go throwing their poles around..

We don't feel we are pushing - yesterday a little excepted.
About 27 mile in the next two days we all feel up to. About 12 tomorrow and then 15 mostly downhill into NOC doesn't look too ambitious.
Not sure about the 27odd mile to Fontanna though. That's a long climb out of NOC.

To each his own. I use the wrist straps to lean into when I'm using the poles, and use my fingers just to kind of steer them. I can't imagine going all day with the fingers of both hands clenched around pole grips, even the cork ones that I have.

I still hope that I can arrange to be on trail when you and Invisible come by (somewhere between NJ and VT, depending on when I can get off for a few days and how fast you're going). You can wave as you leave me in your dust. Or maybe I can treat you to a beer or a meal somewhere.

Perhaps it is because I am a lot shorter, but I was remembering the rocks (at least I think it was rocks) where you were going up, and climbing more than walking. Was just a short part of it, but it stood out for me. AK, guess I could have collapsed them, but this was back when I had the twist (before my current ones with locks), and I was probably more focused on just climbing the rocks.

Knees are still very tender. The left more than the right this time. Really feel it when standing up from sitting and on stairs. There's definitely something going on there. I'm gonna get them taken care of. Have heard nothing but positive remarks about surgery. I'll be good to go soon enough.

I am very concerned about your situation too. I was looking forward to following your progress. However, I was asking the other MM about his gout. You are ATM to me. The only one of the café crowd I've hiked with is 1azarus. Now there's a speed demon. The one time I was out with him, he was ready to make much bigger miles than I was physically capable of. I'm a snail normally, and the combination of snow and bronchitis made me even slower. I wound up simply getting off trail and grabbing a taxi back to my car when I decided I was too sick to hike.

(I seem to recall that he broke away from the pack on the first café outing in Connecticut, too?)

1azarus is superfast - he did carry one when we went to brunch break back in January in Salisbury. He continued north from the Rt. 7 bridge to the Mohawk Trail and hiked on another 10 miles or so. Lou and I shuttled Andy and Sarcasm about 7 miles up that loop and they hiked to a campsite, where laz caught up and joined them. He's a prodigious hiker.

I see Andy did carry on ahead of Jacko and Invisible due to the latter's leg troubles. It will be interesting to see how far he decides to continue? Does anyone know how long he is committed to being out on A.T.? He could cover a lot of ground quickly - wonder if he'll do any journaling?

I am now doubting it is a gout attack. Lasting to long & remedy not working. Also other things like unique smell of urine when I get an attack not present. Swelling & flexibility vary from day to day. It's frustrating as I had planned to leave Saturday for a month off. My window of opportunity is shrinking before I need to be at work when the season kicks in & I have to be here to train people at work along with building maintenance. After a few good days, today was a bad one. Couldn't flex enough to get a sock on & by mid afternoon I could barely hobble around. No clue as to cause. If it's not better by Monday I think will go to doc & possible cortisone shot.

I do not believe he has a journal. He has planned to be out between 1 to 2 months. He has no other timetable. The other plan is for me to drive down and meet him and bring him back. When that happens is still in the works. I can't go untill May, and I can't get down during trail days, so I guess there is no real plan. Good plan. I put up with a knee injury (banged truck door into kneecap) for 3 months. Nothing helped, including physical therapy. The doc finally relented, gave me a cortisone shot, bang! in 3 or 4 days, no pain, swelling, and no more problems.

So sorry to hear about the knee issue's with both Mountain Mike and ATMilkman. ATM... I've heard good things about getting the surgery as well. I wish you well with that. MM... it sounds like you have something like I had going on with my knee a few years back. For no apparent reason, I had fluid build up on my knee. It felt like what you described... The doctor told me it was caused by getting OLD. Gezzzz... I not good with that, so I just kept on moving. I really stretched my knee a lot after exercising, but didn't over do it with the exercising. I did not have to get a shot but I've heard that can help with random knee problems. I'm happy to say that my knees are good for now. My feet were giving me problems earlier this year but they seem good now 2.... IDK what is going on with my body, sometimes. Just as long as it can be "fixed", I'm good! :)

CM just posted THIS:

"A LOT of hikers are sick with similar symptoms just south of Erwin. 5 of 6 hikers that stayed at Little Laurel Shelter are now sick. Several are holed up at Hogback tonight. I am tented at Hogback but didn't even touch the picnic table.

I am going to guess that this a norovirus but I am not expert."

Has anyone heard how OZ is feeling? I hope he didn't get it! The suspected places of the infection is: Little Laurel Shelter, Hogback and Flint Mt. Shelter. Stay away from Uncle Johnny's in Erwin is the word as well. I wonder if someone should post a thread about this?

Very strange person indeed. However, I would argue his inventions have more influence of this planet than any 4 other people you could name combined. I picked 4 because I have an obsession with that number. Tesla had an obsession with the number 3. Which is why we have 3 phase, 60 cycle, 120 volt electricity. It should be noted that he was a free thinker. Not all claims of the man are real. Many are put in place to discredit him. Einstein is pretty easy to bash if you look at his life as well as his "thought experiments". I could think of all kinds of neat things too and call it science.

My personal favorite is George Washington Carver - now THAT is a man who had a passion for what he did. Besides the hiker favorite of Peanut Butter, he had a heart for children in 3rd world areas and invented powdered milk to help them nutritionally. And I think he had more patents than Edison. I know he did turn down a job offer from Henry Ford for 10X his salary because he still had a heart for the teaching and Tuskegee. I'll put him up.
