My personal favorite is George Washington Carver - now THAT is a man who had a passion for what he did. Besides the hiker favorite of Peanut Butter, he had a heart for children in 3rd world areas and invented powdered milk to help them nutritionally. And I think he had more patents than Edison. I know he did turn down a job offer from Henry Ford for 10X his salary because he still had a heart for the teaching and Tuskegee. I'll put him up.

FH, I agree George Washington Carver was an awesome guy with some significant contributions!

Disagree, Edison was a hard worker and a good businessman that set up labs with lots of other great minds testing and developing new things. We can just leave it at Tesla had some issues.

From Standup, a Thru-Hiker. Please be careful in the Smokies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dangerous ice and conditions...

For about a half mile south of the turn to go to the shelter at Mt. Collins and all the way to the shelter and for about a half mile north of that junc...tion, there are very dangerous conditions. The trail is almost solid ice. The climb up Clingmans from Mt. Collins gap to the top is again solid ice and very hard to walk. There has been two dislocated shoulders, a broken wrist, and a broken upper arm. The broken wrist belong to a concert pianist from Austria and more then likely is a career ender. If you have any type of ice grippers to wear on you hiking boots, wear them and save yourself a broken bone or some other injury that will take you off trail. In the late afternoon the conditions become better because of some melting but still dangerous. Be careful everyone that is in the Smoky Mountains. Some parts of the trail are muddy and then perfect for hiking. Around the next bend in the trail there is solid ice. Just thought I'd let you know. Thanks...

We need to get this info to Rasty and HB!

Wow five pages....wasn't so bad. @ work posting.......my home PC will not log on to the Web.

Very nice walk to Cat Rocks and Wildcat Shelter Saturday. We scrambled all over the Pinnacles and the blocks and then arrived to find 18 Boy Scouts in a tent city below the Shelter. I found us a nice squat over the hill from them, put the hooch up and had a pleasant stay. It was a short walk, with some gear....to get a start to Overloads season. We then headed thru Harriman an over the Bear Mtn. Bridge, had lunch in Peekskill, nice Sunday drive thru New York. Pics Later!

Was at Wal*Mart yesterday. I always look at my change. I flipped over a funny looking nickel and saw a large P above the dome (my eyes are not what they used to be). I said to the cashier, "Huh... 35% sliver nickel". She say, "ya'", in a way that meant big deal. I felt like asking her for change for a five in nickels. That nickel has a melt value of about $1.54. Oh well.... just another of my habits. I save the silver coins out of change.

Folks, we have a full-blown trail epidemic going on between Hot Springs and Erwin. If it is beyond that I cannot tell. More than 50% of the hikers are sick or recovered. Those unaffected are in the minority. I personally only know a few folks now that have NOT been sick. The last three nights I have gone to sleep with the sounds of dry heaves. Every day I see people still in their sleeping bags trying to sleep it off. Fortunately it only lasts 24-36 hours. But it is 24-36 hours of hell.

My theory from talking to folks, and this is only one man's theory, is that there is a contaminated water source just north of Hot Springs.

Is there a thread about this or does anybody know anything more?

Headed out for my 4 mile jog. I am always a little fearful at the beginning of my trot. My right knee is holding up so far. It is a little stiff. So far, so good. Nice day to be outside. Later lurkers.

I don't think saving silver coins is all that strange, we do it too. So, then, maybe it IS strange, and hardly anyone notices. But the nickel find was great!!

I like your tag line. Reminds me of the story when a group was asked what one piece of gear you would like if you were lost in the wilderness. One said a cell phone so he could call 911. It was quickly pointed out it might not have reception or could go dead. Another said an axe;with that I can chop branches to make a shelter & wood for a fire I can start by use it by striking it against flint. The group mummered in agreement. Final person said a deck of cards. The group laughed at his suggestion & asked how that would help. He just said I'll start playing solitaire & before you know it someone will be looking over my shoulder saying you can put "this card' there. Nobody could argue with his logic.

We all make stupid mistakes at times. Once while I was working in commercial property sales person booked hotel & conference room for computer/software group. Our electric capabilities were well below what they needed. I get called in to help the master electrician When I get there he is laying out a temp circuit & says he will throw down boxes where he wants me to cut them in. I pull my pliers out & cut the cable to start first box. A large bang & flash follows. I look over at Mike & he shrugs & says "Oh yeah, you might want to shut the power off first!"

It remind me of story of Brice Hammock. I got to hike with him a bit on my PCT hike in 95. He was out with his daughter in her late 30s & complaining about having to slow down to hike with her. He had already done the Triple Crown twice. Last time I saw him in person was at an ALDHAW meeting several years later. I asked what he hiked lately & forget what he did but said at 72 (as I recall) he said his summers hike really beat him up. He proclaimed no more long distance hikes for him. Nothing over 500 miles!

I kinda live life to be happy. Not work for retirement in a job I don't enjoy, or any job I don't enjoy. Quit one of best jobs I ever had to finish PCT. Loved it, enjoyed the respect of bosses, and customers. Just felt wasn't a challenge anymore, & at the time no chance for promotion. I got hired on when the company restructured as #2 in maintenance & construction for 55+ million dollars in property. Both of the final two people to head the department came to me with job offers if they got the job. I had quit the company once before due to no PM program & just patch it up to fix it policy that just pissed off tenants. My salary dropped 2K a year or more each year I worked there because we did things right. More important to me was our tenants were happy! Even our boss was when it came to renewing leases since we went the extra mile to fix things right & quickly mostly through eliminating corporate paper BS on our end. When they wouldn't grant a LOA to finish PCT (Corp BS, not my immediate bosses). Decided time to move on. Done my boss's job for a month twice when he was out do to injury. Was time for new challenge.

Continue on the cafe ways :D

1st off I am not a doctor, nor do I play one in the Café. Having said that I have an opinion (I know many will be shocked at that proclamation).

I do not believe running is the best exercise you can get. It happens to be the only one I enjoy though. One should not run unless their mechanics are very good. It can be really rough on the joints if you are a heel striker or stomper. I have very good mechanics. It makes up for my having a screwed up right knee. I prefer to run on pavement because my gait is very low impact and I run a greater risk of injury running on trails.

I have a love hate relationship with doctors. I have great respect for their ability to treat ailments. I just don't think treating ailments is always the best approach. This is a gray area that only the individual can decide what is best for them. I believe we are "fearfully and wonderfully made". Our bodies are an incredible design. It has been designed to self treat many problems. This ability has limits. Someday, my knee will be at its limit and will have to be turned over to an expert. I believe I have done the right thing by my leg by not allowing the doctors to chop it up when I was 19. I am almost 52 and can still run 4 miles with this screwed up leg.

I do not take meds either. I do not believe meds help. They are necessary at some point. When they become necessary, the help they provide will be at the cost of other parts of the body (kidneys, liver, etc). I take a ton of supplements and have so for decades. I take glucosamine chondrotin with msm, turmeric, fish oil, and vitamin e for my joints. I take other ones for other things. Having said this, I would consult your doctor for a professional opinion. Any doctor worth their salt will look to your environment and behavior before giving you meds. If meds or surgery is the 1st thing that comes out of your doctors mouth, I would get another doctor. That is not to say meds and surgery won't be in your future. It just should not be a knee-jerk.

In short: I have sucked it up, endured the pain, avoided meds, taken supplements, and continue to run. I doubt that would be the best path for all. It has worked pretty good for me so far. Then again, I am pretty stubborn and have a high threshold for pain.

I have recently added turmeric & thank you for the suggestion! I still don't know why my knee flared up. But pain gone down, swelling somewhat. range of motion getting better each day for last few that I have been stretching it.

Wrong, little minion!
I used the rest of the white out and crayons to fix it. It actually says, "No underling may obstruct or interfere with acts of govemance or matters of state in unlikely event that Queen is offline. Failure to observe this rule will result in banishment of offender to "the argumentative FB thread" where he will be forced to actually try to mediate between battling opponents."
That should keep any potential insurrectionist tied up for about, say, 10 years :)

It was fun, not too strenuous, not too far, and the weather was nice. Her boots are fine, she tends to be a hypochondriac (she has her own stool at her Dr. office). She hasn't hiked since fall and she forgets that she needs to build up her muscles slowly. Which is what we did......short walk....relatively level ground, no mud. She didn't get any blisters at all. Normally her Wal-mart boots cut her feet to ribbons. Now she has a nice pair of Asolos.
