Greeting everybody - sad night for me being a runner with a dream of qualifying for the Boston Marathon.... not going to talk about that though - I'm going to share a song with you about this country (as I see it) - to me this song is sort of anthem-like. I like it because it is about Fred Rogers (who was from Pennsylvania) and Hank Williams (who was from Georgiana, Alabama) - this song is about America just like the AT is so I hope you'll listen carefully to this song that I heard about 8 or 10 years ago and thought it was cool but I just listened to it again with good headphones on (mine are Sennheiser - made in Germany - a decadent splurge). Hikerboy - you'll especially like this (because you are cool, like me)

If you're feeling froggy later on, you can always go to the old railroad bridge across the French Broad and walk across it to look down at Frank Bell's rapid. Watch for the missing trestles, though.

I like me some Frank Bell's Rapid - - hiked that trestle, jumped off the trestle into the River and (of course) paddled the rapid. FWIW - Frank Bell was a great guy - - really well known in boater circles - sort of a legend. He started Mondamin Summer Camp (www.mondamin.com/). His son, Andrew Bell who is a world-class boater himself is the camp director - - just a little trivia for you folks.....

you know, the "spa" is totally overpriced - - I suggest getting a tent site, a beer, putting your feet in the river, taking a hot shower and moving on - - the river is cool and the town gets it done but it's not the end all be all trail town - - if you're NOBO, you have some good times ahead to chase down.

I'm gonna get them both done. Should have had it done 18 months ago but I tried the self-healing gig. I can get it feeling pretty good on flat ground with some decent mileage but as soon as I hit the downhills thats exactly what happens - it's all downhill after that. you'd think that getting knocked off the trails after half a dozen times or so I'd learn. But noooooo. Gotta keep trying. I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment. I'm gonna do it right this time. I'm getting new ones.

Back in scouts and my days if lengthy summer car camping trips I used a $10 blue tarp to extend the life of my overused and abused eureka tent by a good four years. None of these "real" backpacking tents that we all have now would have survived half of the abuse I put that poor dome tent through.

Yeah - as HM would say, deets....Rain man came up from TN to finish a PA section..from Swatara Gap to DWG, and I met him at Lehigh Gap and walked with him to DWG, he did 112 miles I believe and I did 36 miles. It rained on Fri the day I got there and I started hiking South to meet him coming North...we had cell servise and it worked out perfect, then I turned around and we both headed north, and went into Palmerton to sleep at the jail that night, pretty neat place that Borough hall basement. Went to Bert's diner 50's motiff and had dinner, then breakfast the next day, caought a shuttle back to the trail then started up the Lehigh Gap, one of the toughest climbs on the AT (steepest) defintely a couple of 5.6-5.7 rock climbing moves in there...a missed step there w/ 30 lb pack...and your dead. Really a nice section, but to many damn rocks....miles and miles of potentially ankle breaking rocks, every step is a possible sprained/strained ankle, real pretty vistas are plentiful2115821159211602116121162We even hiked past the Blue Mt. 1) Couch to Fridge 4000 times (11.85 miles)
2) Davenport Gap to Carvers Gap (137 miles)

4) North Korean border to Anchorage Alaska (Kim Jung and I would have a fun hike)
5) BMT in 3 sections

Coach, I appreciate the picture :)
We visited both Gettysburg and Antietam with some friends during one vacation years ago. It provided some pretty solemn moments for all of us, and definitely affected me more than I'd anticipated. Pickets Charge. Incredible. Even to non-military types like myself who have no great understanding of strategy, the bravery and dedication of the troops on both sides is amazing.
Both battles still resonate in the hearts of Americans still, even after so many years have passed.
RIP to every soldier who fell in battle during those years of conflict.

I like those steep climbs like that! Just don't want to turn around and look. I got a nice, 2" scar on my wrist that I got in Maine as a kid, climbing a steep! My Dad told my to climb on up- I was five, I listened! Do you know what backwoods, Maine hospitals were like in the 60's? Oh right- there wasn't. It was a doctor that had an office in his house! Good thing he was home, and not on a house call!

MM you can get them in colors. I too was very impressed with the one she had set up at the hiker fest in Franklin as was TW. I actually got in it and had plenty of room. It's not free standing and I really can't see the advantages of free standing other than being able to shake the dirt out if it's not windy and being able to dry the bottom by laying it over on it's side - if it's not windy. But a lot of the time it is windy and you have to stake out a free standing tent first any how. When I wear out my tent I'm seriously looking at this one.

I got spared! Looks like the latest storm out here mostly missed us. They were talking up to another 18" after the almost 2' last week. Only a few fluffy inches. Looked like the worst of it went around us.

Whoa.... snow this time of year in SD? MM, it's so hot here. See what you missed? ;) It's really pretty in VA right now. Everything is almost in full bloom. Dogwoods, red bud, candy tuff and pinks. :)

MM... I did not know you've been married before.....you understand then, fo sho!

I still love my Garuda. Was cutting edge, UL when I bought it, made in USA. They made mostly 4 season tents & I was surprised when I went to office at end of the day to do paperwork & the constant messages from Byron; order received, tent shipped. When it didn't arrived when expected I called & got Byron, when I said my name he knew who I was & where shipped to. When I got the tent & new catologue I realized it was the owner of the company!21171

Impressive. That's what you gotta love about a cottage company. Judy was right there with her tents. - Gotta share a story of another owner. Chris from ULA. I broke a buckle on my Circuit 2 days before leaving for Georgia. Called Chris, well called ULA and got Chris, told him my ordeal, he sent me 2 new buckles to Amicalola Fall State Park asap. I asked how much did I owe him and he said - I got it covered, don't worry about it. That's just damn good business. Buckle was waiting for me at the desk when I got there.

That's true...
Snakes can be sneaky sometimes. They come slithering around when you least expect them sometimes but they make their presence known. Those lil bugs.. not so much! Ahhhh!!! Speaking of bees.. they are out and look huge this year.

They made mostly expedition tents. Was sorry to hear he sold out to a large mainstream company & they shipped manufacturing overseas.
