RS, glad you got there to enjoy some spring weather. :)
I wonder if they sell old trade-in furniture at low rates for target practice?Well the dumpster looked all shot to hell, though I didn't get a pick...never accured to me.....

You know I was thinking if we merged his acronyms (OS inside of RS) he could be ROSS. :rolleyes:A fine Scottish name...

Or SORS? ........A fine name for the start of a hot spot/blister/ and while i have no blisters, I've been sleeping for two days......

Ugh, I remember that section very well...upper 80's and hot sun beating off the rocks as we scrambled up them. You took on a pretty rugged 36-mile stretch for an early season hike.
Nice legs, btw :D **leering and oogling**I always seem to bite off more than I can chew......It's part of my personality, the legs are just a throw in for the shoes...

Wait... Wha??? Skip lurking for a couple days and find One Sock gone and Rocketsocks back??? Did he finally find the one the dryer ate?:confused:While I did not find any lost socks, I recently found a ton of musscle I didn't know I had...still can't believe it. :welcomeTo white blaze

Overload first tried to get us a campsite for the 150th......Booked solid for miles around. She was told that they expected over 3 million for the anniversary. Who knows if that included reinactors. I can't even imagine the 180,000 troops in the battle getting around that town for four days!!!!!!!! It would be quite a site of all those people trying to get around the Auto Tour, and the Visitor center movie house has maybe 100 seats! No thank you 'Socks, In July no less! Take pics for us!!:)

Missing persons report.
Myself, Invisible Man, Army Ant and Wilson are currently settled in to a hostel in downtown Asheville.
Mother Teresa (our shuttle driver for this sidetrip) is with family - this is her town.
I have been remiss on TJ's and here as I have had no service on my SAP since Gatlinburg.
We are at Hot Springs but due to Trail Fest there (including 14 "Warrior Hike" hikers and supporters) no rooms are available there.
We are returning tomorrow and will tent Saturday night and resume hiking Sunday morning.
Invisible has worked out our daily mileage as over 13 miles a day (provided you don't count zeroes in which case it is about 8).:p

Its not like a lone crazy person going on a killing spree or a bank robber. These guys might be part of a organization with more plans to kill/hurt more of the general population. We must and should be able to question/interrogate him to find out, to try and prevent future attacks.

Yes this news junkie of an owl has radio and two tv's going... I was just in shock about it after watching all those lost years of cops and robber shows... this has only done once before. I admit I am glued to the set, between the unfortunate blast in Waco, the flood in Illinois, and Boston. And FYI why the hell would anyone put a retirement home and a playground next to a fertilizer tank? All the houses were leveled in several directions.

So nice to get your update, Jacko. You're doing great! Just remember, almost everyone on these long distance hikes has their down days, times of low mood - it's like real life in that. I believe that as the weather improves and spring kicks winter entirely to the curb, with ever more sunshine each day for a couple more months, it'll get better. Also, they say that as you get into VA, the trail gets easier, so the miles will increase, which probably will brighten the spirit, too.

Keep on trucking, Man - you can do it, we're rooting for you! Plus, when computer and SAP allow, you're a great trail journalist. :)

They're waiting for his condition to stabilize before questioning him, which is step 1. They won't need his cooperation to convict him of crimes he committed in the firefight with the cops - plenty of reliable witnesses to that - and probably not in the bombing, since they have video and photo evidence and his or his brother's admission to the guy they carjacked.

As to the Mirandizing, they can invoke public safety - the keys there being that they want to find out about any other bombs he and his brother may have placed and how to disable them, as well as about whatever network they are tied into; remember, his brother appears to have spent months overseas in or near Chechnya, and during that time the US State Department, I hear in news reports, does not know of his travels. It wouldn't surprise me if he spent that time training with terrorists. So they don't need to Mirandize him right away - and he can always demand to see a lawyer, anyhow. The information he might be able to provide could be very helpful.

As to death penalty, the federal d.p. applies here, as he appears to have committed federal terrorism crimes, which likely would supercede the local Mass crimes - he could be tried for both, of course. I personally see the d.p. as state-sponsored vengeance and oppose it, therefore, on moral grounds.

I have to admit, I considered going home this morning - leaving Invisible to go on without me.
Very homesick at the moment but my wife and Invisible have convinced me I should stay.

The class of 2013 has had a very rough and bumpy start compared to previous years. Give yourself one more month and see what you think then. You're at the threshold of full spring and the promise of consistent temps, good weather, and easier trail. Thanks Coach - hows life? - Its nice to have a weekend, my grass is a mess and the sun is out...

A nice weekend indeed.....I am checking in just now from my desk @ work! Can't even find the time to lurk. And I just got back from a service for a friend since I was 12 maybe. Franny. He was my dads right hand in a few auto body shops over our lives. I learned to paint from Franny. He was a big fat guy who smoked like a chimney.....while he was painting! The only vegetable he ever ate was Onion Rings, with a dozen Hummells Hot Dogs. But, his health has been bad for years and years. He complained about making it this far. He was a great guy, do anything for you. He helped run the local Bait & Tackle/ Laundramat/ Gas station/ printshop. He was a good guy.
I'm working 'cause I just took 2 days for the Gettysburg Trip, 2 days next week to fish Penns Creek....and then who knows when I may have to drive south for the Proprietor. I have to get some work done!:sun

They should implant microchips at springer and track their mileage, if they get to close to the Whites, the chips will set of sensors in the AMC huts and the crew will throw them tumbling down back to the bus stop at the base of the mountains!

Uggh, the fact that I can't do a thru is turning me into a bitter old coot... Thrus are overrated. Granted it is often easier to get one LOA from work, But I believe in splitting it up to do LASH ( Long Ass Section Hike) You have time to get your trail legs, but not get beat down by the trail & need to make miles to reach your goal. My favorite long distance hike was PCT Donner Pass to Mt Whitney. The trail allowed for good miles but I enjoyed extended lunches with views where I would often pull out a book & read or even take a nap. I even hiked for a while with one thru who cut his hike short for medical reasons, when we split due to different resupply drops he thanked me for reminding him how to hike "Civilized"

Canterbury Tales!
not sure I spelled it correctly, but we had a teacher in 6th grade who read the entire prologue to the class in the original verse. I never forgot that!

I have a trick memory sometimes. I can actually get dozens of lines into it:
Whan Zephyus eek, with his sweete breeth,
Inspired hath in every holt and heeth
The tendre croppes, and the yonge Sonne
Hath in the Ram his halve-cours yronne,
And smale fowles maken melodye
That sleepen all the night with open ye
(So priketh hem Nature in hire corages)
Than longen folk to goon on pilgrimages,
And palmers for to seeken straunge strondes
To ferne halwes, couth in sondry londes,
But specially, from every shires end
Of Engelond to Canterbury they wend,
The holy blisful martyr for to seeke,
Hem that hath holpen whan that they were seke.

(I don't promise correct spelling, but Chaucer himself wasn't consistent in how he spelt things.)

I had a professor as an undergraduate who could recite the entirety of Miller's Tale from memory - and was hilarious at it! (Miller's Tale is quite an elaborate dirty joke.)

BB... I love what you wrote. You shared how you really feel. Feelings are feelings they are neither right or wrong. That's why I like to hear them. I can say from experience that I've been furious with some criticism thrown my way before on here. I like being female cause we just tell it like it is when that happens.

I'm putting on my Dr. Phil hat here, bear with me. Conflict is inevitable when a group(2 or more) of people interact. It happens. It's all about resolving conflict. You can choose not to resolve it, that's fine. But, if you cherish the relationship(s), you then have motivation to resolve it. If the person (s) involved in the conflict is on the same page, as far as wanting to continue the relationship, then there's hope for restoration.

Sometimes you will discover that the person involved meant no harm at all. Huge misunderstandings can take place (even more so on here) between people. If that's the case talking it out is huge.

BB.. if I ever said something that was critical of you, I would be so upset if you didn't share that with me & just walked away. Please, if there's anything that I've said, I would want to talk it out and make it right.

Thank you to everyone that has cared about me. You guys mean a lot to me.

@ my desk again, just checking in this morning........I must get things done so I can go to fish with my buddy Frank. We actually have to get a lot of walking in this trip. We normally bring our Mtn bikes to ride the rail trail a few miles down to the best fishing, but......the tunnel that the 'Mid-state Trail' shares is closed due to falling rocks. We will be hiking over or around Poe Mountain to get to the nice fish.
Which is one of the circumstances that got me back to backpacking. In '10' I forcemarched Frank into the Mission Mountain Wilderness to a spot I've backpacked to fish.........cold ....no hiking in months and we hadn't even been on the ice in months. It beat us up pretty good, but that helped me realize Hey! I love this and I'm not stopping now........................so as you can see, It is all good:sun

Got in an evening Sleeping Giant schelp yesterday, Coach. Knocked off most of the trail miles I had left to cover in the system - the Blue Q trail east of Chestnut Lane, a segment of the Yellow and the southern leg of the Red Square, the eastern Yellow-Green Connector and most of the Red which I hadn't yet done. At this point, all I have left is scraps - two Red segments, one northerly and one southerly, one bit of the Green in the heart of the park, the "nature trail" - I think that counts, the Horse Trail if they count that. Pretty cool to be close to finishing it - I'm stuck in CT next weekend, so I probably will finish out the redlining, wanna go ahead and complete the Metacomet, too, while I'm at it.

You getting out in the sunshine today? I might go for a little Talcott or Penwood ramble - no time for anything bigger.

I am here and will explain my absence as best I can with the hope of not causing a stir.

I believe a person's reputation is the most valuable commodity one has. A good name is something to be desired, cultivated, earned, and maintained. It is not a free gift. It is not a right. Not all deserve one. When a person's name is impugned, one should consider the source. If the source is a fool, the criticism should be dismissed. If the source is not a fool, the criticism should give pause. It should be considered. It should be used to better yourself.

My character has been called into question by one of my favorite people on Whiteblaze. This has been done before by other people on different matters. In the past it has been easy to take the criticism, because it was accurate. I imposed a 3 minute rule on my posts because of helpful criticism. I joined in the fun in bashing myself because that criticism was accurate. I do not always frame things well and sometimes speak too soon. My hasty words make me look silly, blunt, arrogant, and condescending at times. It is not my intent. I welcome constructive criticism. I hope to build a good name and be worthy of it.

As a rule, I do not go on social websites. I deleted my Facebook page and Google+ page long ago. I will likely do the same here at some point. I do not say things well at times. I have not mastered the art of proper inflection in type. I like to kid and joke. Sometimes my jokes are taken seriously. I mean no person ill will. I have enough faults that precludes my picking at other people's faults. We are advised to remove the beam in our own eye before regarding the mote in the eyes of others. I have a forest to remove here.

I was furious beyond measure at the latest criticism. I have calmed down. It was best that I did not pursue it in the way I was tempted to. I have great respect for the source. I believe the source has earned a good reputation on Whiteblaze and deserves that reputation. I believe I would rightfully lose the debate. I am at a loss. I do not know of a good way to proceed. I will not.

In short, it is highly likely that I am done posting on Whiteblaze. It has been fun. I have carefully chosen all my friends here. I believe them all to be quality people with good names. BB we miss you. I try not to take anything on the net with to much seriousness. I hope you reconsider & come back.

Ditto on this, don't let nothing get to you. Think like HB and I've seen you say it too - it's all good.

HB you should consider at least extending your hike through Mt. Rodgers/Grayson Highlands.

BB... feel the love! :)

HB... whereever you end up stopping ur hike, please let me try to get down to see you whereever that may be... Don't forget that I can shuttle you any place you need to go... except Maine... that's a lil too far. ;) Hum... maybe Lou could meet us part of the way. I'll grab aficion, DH, TW and S'more too.. This could turn into a real WB reunion! :p

I agree with the agree. You gotta see the ponies. Take an apple, put it in your pocket and they will find it.

That would leave nothing to do next year. I'll see what I want to do when I hit Damascus.

Hey Cafe People!

If anyone wants to go hiking the first weekend of May, a few of us are planning to do an overnight in the Damascus area on May 4-5. I've talked with Oz and he thinks he'll be in Damascus by then. We hope to catch up with Oz & Invisible Man (and possibly the others) wherever they are at that point and hike and camp overnight.

This is been a great trip so far and I've already proven to myself that I can hike as far as I want to. Economics however dictate that I pay for myfrivolity. At some point I must return to work. Lone wolf medicine man says hello. I've met so many great people out here and I'm looking forward to meeting more of you. Trips not over yet one day at a time.

Wrong! You still have to go back and do the approach trail to Springer. Otherwise you've deprived yourself of the trip of a lifetime :D

hey there everyone - long time -no post, sorry - I've been enjoying this wonderful weather we've been having in GA / NC - I actually wore a sweater all weekend while in the mountains around Brevard - down jacket and cap at night - what a great weekend - - anyway, I'm home for a while and turned on the computer and thought I'd stop into the Cafe and say hello.
