Actually, what the very loose plan currently is, is to find out about where Oz, Invisible, et al are going to be on that weekend. He's thinking he'll be in Damascus, or nearly there, by then. So the plan is to join him for a day & night of hiking/camping & hanging out with everyone else, ideally hiking into town with him during the weekend. Coach Lou is gonna be there, I don't know exactly how long. If he's north of there, we may hike/camp and then head back to town again.
Margaritas are involved at some point. Some kind of cheesecake too.
Right now, S'more, aficion, Hikermom, and myself are planning to do a nice short overnight backpack/hike and hook up with Oz & group while on the trail. If people want to hang out in Damascus, or do other stuff, that will work out fine, since we all are aiming to be in Damascus at least part of the weekend anyway.
Shellie might like biking the Virginia Creeper trail.

It makes him think he's on a Harley.
True story - I used to put playing cards on my bike, putting 2 on each side of the front and 2 on each side of the rear. Now get this. I had strings run from each clothes pin to the handlebar. I would take off riding like hell pulling each string one at a time firing my jet engines. When I got all 8 engines running I was unstoppable.

How cool is this? Nearly everyone in Coastal Connecticut heard a sound ranging from a loud rumbling to a houseshaking bang last Friday night. Most of us thought it was caused by a military Jet going supersonic too close to shore, turns out the answer is much cooler:

http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/Possible-Meteorite-in-Wolcott-204294971.html

Meteorite Lands on Home in Wolcott

http://media.nbcconnecticut.com/images/wolcottmeteorite_722.jpg

Yale expert confirmed Tuesday that an object that crashed through a house in Wolcott Friday night was a meteorite.
Larry Beck, of Williams Court in Wolcott, called police at 10:20 a.m. on Saturday and said a rock crashed through the roof of his house on Friday night and damaged the roof and copper piping, and cracked the ceiling in his kitchen.
"All the sheet rock had broken apart and it was on the floor," Beck said.
That was around the time that people from several towns along the shoreline (http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/Mysterious-Boom-Rattles-Windows-in-Connecticut-203874971.html) called police and reported a loud boom that rattled windows.
Beck told police that he’d heard a loud crash and thought that a joist or rafter had broken.
When he checked the attic on Saturday morning, he found a hole in his roof, damage to the pipes and rock broke in half in the attic, police said.
"As I'm crawling across, I say 'honey, I can see some daylight coming through the roof," Beck said.
At first, police thought the rock was a broken piece of airport runway concrete that had dropped from a plane when landing gear was being lowered, because Beck said that there is a lot of overhead airline traffic at all and Bradley Airport and Oxford Airports are nearby, police said.
Officials contacted the New England Regional Office of the Federal Aviation Administration and arrangements were made to have someone from the FAA view the rock.
Beck also contacted a local meteorolgist about the rock that crashed through his roof. John Bagioni, who owns Fax-Alert Weather Service, LLC in Burlington, immediately thought the rock might be a meteorite. The description of the rock, coupled with reports of a loud boom across the state around the time the rock struck the home, lead Bagioni to his conclusion.
Bagioni contacted NBC Connecticut meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan Monday afternoon about the discovery in Wolcott.
On Monday, NBC Connecticut contacted police about the possibility of it being a meteorite and police said they were made aware that a meteor shower had taken place on Friday night.
Bagioni said he was called in to help check out the specimen and his opinion is that this appears to be a Chondrite meteorite.
After examining the object on Tuesday, Stefan Nicolescu, the collections manager for the Mineralogy Division at the Yale Peabody Museum confirmed it was in fact a meteorite.
We are toward the end of the Lyrids meteor shower, which happens every year between April 16 and April 26, when Earth crosses the orbit of comet Thatcher, according to Nicolescu.
The first recorded meteroite in the New World fell in Weston, Connecticut in 1807,according to the Peabocy Museum Web site (http://peabody.yale.edu/collections/meteorites-and-planetary-science/weston-meteorite).
There were reports of loud explosions (http://peabody.yale.edu/collections/meteorites-and-planetary-science/weston-meteorite) from more than 40 miles away and fragments of stone fell in at least six places.
Hundreds of meteorites fall to earth each year, but only five to 10 were immediately recovered, according to the Peabody's Web site on Meteorites and Planetary Science.

That is remarkable! I've seen a lot of shooting stars over the years, some very bright and long lasting. I've never heard one though.
Best was Perseids in August 1974. Worked as a cabin counselor and riding instructor at Mondamin in Tuxedo, NC.
Had one night off every 2 weeks. The day came totally overcast and we were bummed. Got the bright idea to go up Mt Mitchell and see if we could get above the clouds. There was a shelter about a mile from the summit that could be reached from a side trail. Sure enough, when we got there we were literally 100 feet above the top of the clouds. Looked like a sea of white at our feet and a bazillion stars above, Tied hammocks to those sturdy little 8 foot tall trees at 6,000 feet and watched the most amazing show I've seen before or since. There were up to 30 visible per minute at times. Made us feel kinda small but very blessed.

It works like this - see how many existing thread topics you can combine into one post. Extra points if what you're saying is all true

Here's mine:

"Opportunities to combine three threads are fairly rare, (1) much like the infrequent appearance of aficion's Lurid meteors. Years ago while hiking the section of PA near Duncannon, (2) my husband got to feeling unwell. We took 2 zeroes to recover, during which he stayed at the motel while I hiked the piddly mile or so of trail that goes through town. He refused to hike the town trail when we left. (3) he still claims he finished PA. Can he truthfully say this?"

(1)If I start a through hike in May,(2)how long will it take until I get to the important place on the trail, Neel's Gap,(3) where I would like to get a gear shakedown,(4) and rent a bear canister for that next section with the active bear problem,(5) or should I just skip that section, (6) and hitchhike to Damascus for Trail Days,(7)whereI'd like to eat at The Blue Blaze Cafe.

Just sign the register at the Visitors Center (it's about 200ft to the desk from the parking lot) head straight to Damascus. Tell them your thru-hiking and want the hikers breakfast. You've seen pics of all that area anyway.

Just send the same one out every week. There's enough repetition here that no one would ever notice!

Considering a northbound thru starting in September, is that too late? And with the temps falling at what temperature will my alcohol stove still function? On those lines what is the best stove to use? And will my 40 degree bag be warm enough? How can I pack it all in my ULA Catalyst? Can I still spend cash when I get to town or is a debit card a must? And it being cold is going commando still a good idea? Are the trail guides still accurate in the winter or is there a special one for colder temps? And the only questions I already know the answer to is that cheese will last a long time and I ain't carrying any chicken ankles.

Right now the date is sort of up in the air. My buddy just had his second eye worked on, cataract surgery. He wants to make sure his vision is back or at least get the right glasses before the hike. Also he is a cold sleeper and trying to push the date back a little to get warmer nights.
